Machine-Learning-Guided Prediction Models of Critical Temperature of Cuprates

Cuprates, a member of high-Tc superconductors, have been on the long-debate on their superconducting mechanism, so that predicting the critical temperature of cuprates still remains elusive. Herein, using machine learning and first principle calculations, we predict the maximum superconducting transition temperature (Tc,max) of hole-doped cuprates and suggest the explicit functional form for Tc,max with the root-mean-square-error of 3.705 K and the coefficient of determination R2 of 0.969. We employed two machine learning models; one is a parametric brute force searching method and another is a non-parametric random forest regression model. We have found that material dependent parameters such as the Bader charge of apical oxygen, the bond strength between apical atoms, and the number of superconducting layers are important features to estimate Tc,max. Furthermore, we predict the Tc,max of hypothetical cuprates generated by replacing apical cations with other elements. When Ga is an apical cation, the predicted Tc,max is the highest among the hypothetical structures with 71, 117, and 131 K for one, two, and three CuO2 layers, respectively. These findings suggest that machine learning could guide the design of new high-Tc superconductors in the future.

Topologically non-trivial photonic surface degeneracy in a photonic metamaterial

The recent development of topological photonics has revealed a variety of intriguing phenomena such as Weyl degeneracy. However, topologically non-trivial degeneracy with higher dimension has not been reported in photonics. In this Letter, topologically charged photonic surface degeneracy in a helix structure possessing two-fold screw symmetry is demonstrated. Calculated Chern number and photonic Fermi arcs support topological phase of the surface degeneracy. We also show that the photonic system can work in both metamaterial and photonic crystal regime, which have an order of magnitude different frequency range by the choice of material for the helix. This work suggests the possibilities of unprecedented photonic topological features with higher dimensions.

Joint Blind Motion Deblurring and Depth Estimation of Light Field

Removing camera motion blur from a single light field is a challenging task since it is highly ill-posed inverse problem. The problem becomes even worse when blur kernel varies spatially due to scene depth variation and high-order camera motion. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to estimate all blur model variables jointly, including latent sub-aperture image, camera motion, and scene depth from the blurred 4D light field. Exploiting multi-view nature of a light field relieves the inverse property of the optimization by utilizing strong depth cues and multi-view blur observation. The proposed joint estimation achieves high quality light field deblurring and depth estimation simultaneously under arbitrary 6-DOF camera motion and unconstrained scene depth. Intensive experiment on real and synthetic blurred light field confirms that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art light field deblurring and depth estimation methods.

Spectral descriptors for bulk metallic glasses based on the thermodynamics of competing crystalline phases

Metallic glasses have attracted considerable interest in recent years due to their unique combination of superb properties and processability. Predicting bulk metallic glass formers from known parameters remains a challenge and the search for new systems is still performed by trial and error. It has been speculated that some sort of "confusion" during crystallization of the crystalline phases competing with glass formation could play a key role. Here, we propose a heuristic descriptor quantifying confusion and demonstrate its validity by detailed experiments on two well-known glass forming alloy systems. With the insight provided by these results, we develop a robust model for predicting glass formation ability based on the spectral decomposition of geometrical and energetic features of crystalline phases calculated ab-initio in the AFLOW high throughput framework. Our findings indicate that the formation of metallic glass phases could be a much more common phenomenon than currently estimated, with more than 17% of binary alloy systems being potential glass formers. Our approach is capable of pinpointing favorable compositions, overcoming a major bottleneck hindering the discovery of new materials. Hence, it is demonstrated that smart descriptors, based solely on the energetics and structure of competing crystalline phases calculated from first-principles and available in online databases, others the sought-after key for accelerated discovery of novel metallic glasses.

Predicting Bulk Metallic Glass Forming Ability with the Thermodynamic Density of Competing Crystalline States

Despite two decades of studies, the formation of metallic glasses, very promising systems for industrial applications, still remains mostly unexplained. This lack of knowledge hinders the search for new systems, still performed with combinatorial trial and error. In the past, it was speculated that some sort of "confusion" during crystallization could play a key role during their formation. In this article, we propose a heuristic descriptor quantifying such confusion. It is based on the "thermodynamic density of competing crystalline states", parameterized from high-throughput ab-initio calculations. The existence of highly enthalpy-degenerate but geometrically-different phases frustrates the crystallization process and promotes glass formation. Two test beds are considered. A good and a bad glass-former, CuZr and NiZr, are experimentally characterized with high-throughput synthesis. The experimental results corroborate the capability of the heuristic descriptor in predicting glass forming ability through the compositional space. Our analysis is expected to deepen the understanding of the underlying mechanisms and to accelerate the discovery of novel metallic glasses.
