Effects of pairing, continuum, and deformation on particles in the classically forbidden regions for Mg isotopes

Particles in the classically forbidden regions are studied based on the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum with PC-PK1 for magnesium isotopes. By analyzing the neutron and proton radii, it is found that the largest deviations from the empirical values appear at the predicted neutron halo nuclei $^{42}$Mg and $^{44}$Mg. Consistently, notable increases at $^{42}$Mg and $^{44}$Mg are found in the total number of neutrons in the classically forbidden regions that includes the number of neutrons in continuum. It is shown that the deformation effect, in general, increases the number of particles in the classically forbidden regions below the continuum threshold. The most deeply bound single-particle states play the dominant roles in the increase caused by deformation.

Topological Phase Transition in Layered XIn$_2$P$_2$ (X = Ca, Sr)

Based on fully relativistic first-principles calculations, we studied the topological properties of layered XIn$_2$P$_2$ (X = Ca, Sr). Band inversion can be induced by strain without SOC, forming one nodal ring in the k$_z$ = 0 plane, which is protected by the coexistence of time-reversal and mirror-reflection symmetry. Including SOC, a substantial band gap is opened along the nodal line and the line-node semimetal would evolve into a topological insulator. These results reveal a category of materials showing quantum phase transition from trivial semiconductor and topologically nontrivial insulator by the tuneable elastic strain engineering. Our investigations provide a new perspective about the formation of topological line-node semimetal under stain.

Pancharatnam-Berry phase induced spin-selective transmission in herringbone dielectric metamaterials

Manipulating the polarisation of light is crucial for sensing and imaging applications. One such aspect in particular is selective transmission of one circular polarisation (spin) when light is transmitted through a medium or a device. However, most present methods of achieving this have relatively low efficiency and selectivity, whilst high selectivity examples rely on lossy and complex three-dimensional helical or multilayer structures. Here, we propose a dielectric metamaterial approach for achieving spin-selective transmission of electromagnetic waves, utilizing spin-controlled constructive or destructive interference between two Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phases in conjunction with propagative dynamic phase. The dielectric metamaterial, consisting of monolithic silicon herringbone structures, exhibits a broadband operation in the terahertz regime whilst obtaining a spin-selective efficiency upwards of 60%. Such a device is robust and is not easily degraded by errors in fabrication.
