Higher Structures on Boundary Conformal Manifolds: Higher Berry Phase and Boundary Conformal Field Theory

We introduce the notion of higher Berry connection and curvature in the space of conformal boundary conditions in (1+1)d conformal field theories (CFT), related to each other by exactly marginal boundary deformations, forming a "boundary conformal manifold." Our definition builds upon previous works on tensor networks, such as matrix product states (MPS), where the triple inner product or multi-wavefunction overlap plays the key geometric role. On the one hand, our boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) formulation of higher Berry phase provides a new analytic tool to study families of invertible phases in condensed matter systems. On the other hand, it uncovers a new geometric structure on the moduli space of conformal boundary conditions, beyond the usual Riemannian structure defined through the Zamolodchikov metric. When the boundary conformal manifold has an interpretation as the position moduli space of a D-brane, our higher Berry connection coincides with the NS-NS $B$-field in string theory. The general definition does not require such an interpretation and is formulated purely field-theoretically, in terms of correlation functions of boundary-condition-changing (bcc) operators. We also explore a connection between higher Berry connections and functional Berry connections in the loop spaces of boundary conformal manifolds.

A non-unitary bulk-boundary correspondence: Non-unitary Haagerup RCFTs from S-fold SCFTs

We introduce a novel class of two-dimensional non-unitary rational conformal field theories (RCFTs) whose modular data are identical to the generalized Haagerup-Izumi modular data. Via the bulk-boundary correspondence, they are related to the three-dimensional non-unitary Haagerup topological field theories, recently constructed by a topological twisting of three-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ rank-zero superconformal field theories (SCFTs), called S-fold SCFTs. We propose that, up to the overall factors, the half-indices of the rank-zero SCFTs give the explicit Nahm representation of four conformal characters of the RCFTs including the vacuum character. Using the theory of Bantay-Gannon, we can successfully complete them into the full admissible conformal characters of the RCFTs.

Mirror descent of Hopfield model

Mirror descent is an elegant optimization technique that leverages a dual space of parametric models to perform gradient descent. While originally developed for convex optimization, it has increasingly been applied in the field of machine learning. In this study, we propose a novel approach for utilizing mirror descent to initialize the parameters of neural networks. Specifically, we demonstrate that by using the Hopfield model as a prototype for neural networks, mirror descent can effectively train the model with significantly improved performance compared to traditional gradient descent methods that rely on random parameter initialization. Our findings highlight the potential of mirror descent as a promising initialization technique for enhancing the optimization of machine learning models.

Generalized non-unitary Haagerup-Izumi modular data from 3D S-fold SCFTs

By applying the recently proposed (3D rank-0 $\mathcal{N}$=4 SCFT)/(non-unitary TQFTs) correspondence to S-fold SCFTs, we construct an exotic class of non-unitary TQFTs labelled by an integer $k\geq 3$. The SCFTs are obtained by gauging diagonal $SU(2)$ subgroup of $T[SU(2)]$ theory with Chern-Simons level $k$. We give the explicit expression for modular data, $S$ and $T$ matrices, of the TQFTs. When $k=4m^2+4m+3$ with an integer $m\geq 1$, the modular data (modulo a decoupled semion) is identical to a non-unitary Haagerup-Izumi modular data. Thus, we give a physical realization of the exotic non-unitary modular data as well as its generalization using an exotic class of SCFTs.
