Kodaira-Saito vanishing via Higgs bundles in positive characteristic

The goal of this paper is to give a new proof of a special case of the Kodaira-Saito vanishing theorem for a variation of Hodge structure on the complement of a divisor with normal crossings. The proof does not use the theory of mixed Hodge modules, but instead reduces it to a more general vanishing theorem for semistable nilpotent Higgs bundles, which is then proved by using some facts about Higgs bundles in positive characteristic.

Toward the structure of fibered fundamental groups of projective varieties

The fundamental group of a smooth projective variety is fibered if it maps onto the fundamental group of smooth curve of genus 2 or more. The goal of this paper is to establish some strong restrictions on these groups, and in particular on the fundamental groups of Kodaira surfaces. In the specific case of a Kodaira surface, these results are in the form of restrictions on the monodromy representation into the mapping class group. When the monodromy is composed with certain standard representations, the images are Zariski dense in a semisimple group of Hermitian type.

Simpson's construction of varieties with many local systems

The purpose of this largely expository note is to give some examples of smooth projective varieties with zero first Betti number but nontrivial families of local systems of higher ranks. The most interesting examples are due to Simpson.

A Lefschetz (1,1) theorem for singular varieties

The goal of this article is to try understand where Hodge cycles on a singular complex projective variety X come from. As a first step we consider Hodge cycles on the maximal pure quotient $H^{2p}(X)/W_{2p-1}$, and introduce a class of algebraic cycles that we call homologically Cartier, that should conjecturally describe all such Hodge cycles. Secondly, given a singular complex projective variety $X$, we show that there is a cycle map from motivic cohomology group $H^{2p}_M(X,Q(p))$ to the space of weight 2p Hodge cycles in $H^{2p}(X,Q)$. We conjecture that this is surjective when X is defined over the algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}$. We show that this holds integrally when p=1, and we also give a concrete interpretation of motivic classes in this degree. Finally, we show that the general conjecture holds for a self fibre product of elliptic modular surfaces.

On the fundamental groups of normal varieties

We show that the fundamental groups of normal complex algebraic varieties share many properties of the fundamental groups of smooth varieties. The jump loci of rank one local systems on a normal variety are related to the jump loci of a resolution and of a smoothing of this variety.

Geometric Hodge structures with prescribed Hodge numbers

Call a pure Hodge structure geometric if it is contained in the cohomology of a smooth complex projective variety. The main goal is to show that for any set of Hodge numbers (subject to the obvious constraints), there exists a geometric Hodge structure with precisely these Hodge numbers. This is related to recent work of Schreieder, but the construction here is simpler. This also contains some speculations about 2 dimensional geometric Hodge structures.

Restrictions on the prime to $p$ fundamental group of a smooth projective variety

The goal of this paper is to obtain restrictions on the prime to p quotient of the étale fundamental group of a smooth projective variety in characteristic $p\ge 0$. The results are analogues some theorems in the study of Kähler groups. Our first main result is that such groups are indecomposable under coproduct. The second gives a classification of the pro-$\ell$ parts of one relator groups in this class.

A new class of surfaces with maximal Picard number

A new class of examples of surfaces with maximal Picard number is constructed. These carry pencils of genus two or three curves such their Jacobian fibrations are isogenous to fibre products of elliptic modular surfaces.

Hodge theory of cyclic covers branched over a union of hyperplanes

Suppose that Y is a cyclic cover of projective space branched over a hyperplane arrangement D, and that U is the complement of the ramification locus in Y. The first theorem implies that the Beilinson-Hodge conjecture holds for U if certain multiplicities of D are coprime to the degree of the cover. For instance this applies when D is reduced with normal crossings. The second theorem shows that when D has normal crossings and the degree of the cover is a prime number, the generalized Hodge conjecture holds for any toroidal resolution of Y. The last section contains some partial extensions to more general nonabelian covers.

Decomposition of direct images of logarithmic differentials

The purpose of this note is to give a short proof of a theorem of Kollár that the derived direct image of the canonical sheaf splits into a sum of its cohomology sheaves. This is deduced from a stronger decomposition theorem for direct images of sheaves of logarithmic differentials, together with the weak semistable reduction theorem.

The smooth center of the cohomology of a singular variety

We study constraints on the Chern classes of a vector bundle on a singular variety. We use this constraint to study a variety which carries a Hodge cycle that are not a linear combination of Chern classes of vector bundles on it.

Weights on cohomology, invariants of singularities, and dual complexes

In this paper, we extract natural invariants of a singularity by using the Deligne weight filtration on the cohomology of an exceptional fibre of a resolution, and also on the intersection cohomology of the link. Our primary goal is to study and give natural bounds on the weights in terms of direct images of differential forms. These bounds can be made explicit for various standard classes such as rational, isolated normal Cohen-Macaulay and toroidal singularities, and lead to strong restrictions on the topology of these singularities. A secondary goal of this paper is to make the weight filtration, and related constructions, more widely accessible. So we have tried to make the presentation somewhat self contained. This is supersedes our earlier preprint arXiv:0902.4234.

An Abelian Category of Motivic Sheaves

The goal of this paper is to construct a category of motivic "sheaves" on an algebraic variety defined over a subfield of C, using Nori's method. This categoryis abelian and it possesses faithful exact realization functors to the categoriesof constructible sheaves for the classical and etale topologies. Moreover, there is a tannakian subcategory of motivic local systems with a realization functor into the category of variations of mixed Hodge structures. Conversely, all basic geometric examples of the latter come from this motivic category.

Frobenius Amplitude, Ultraproducts, and Vanishing on Singular Spaces

When X is a singular complex projective variety, we prove a Kodaira type vanishing theorem generalizing results of Navarro Aznar and others. This is proved by extending the Deligne-Illusie decomposition to the Du Bois complex. We also give a new definition of Frobenius amplitude (introduced in math.AG/0202129) using ultraproducts.

Beilinson-Tate cycles on semiabelian varieties

Along the lines of Hodge and Tate conjectures, Beilinson conjectured that in the qth cohomology all the weight 2q Hodge cycles of a smooth complex variety and all the weight 2q Tate cycles of a smooth variety over a finitely generated field comes from the higher Chow groups. For product of curves and semiabelian varieties, Beilinson-Hodge conjecture was shown in a previous paper by the authors. Here both Beilinson-Hodge and Beilinson-Tate conjectures are shown to be true for varieties dominated by product of curves. We also show that lower weight Hodge cycles (resp. Tate cycles) are algebraic in these situations.

The Hodge theoretic fundamental group and its cohomology

In this paper, we explore a notion of nonabelian Hodge structure on the fundamental group of an algebraic variety. This is approach is compared to some alternative approaches due to Morgan, Hain and others. We also give criteria for a variety to be a Hodge theoretic K(pi,1), which roughly means that the cohomology of variations of mixed Hodge structure can be determined from the group.

Homomorphisms between Kaehler groups

This is partly a survey and partly a research article. Some known results and open problems about Kaehler groups (fundamental groups of compact Kaehler manifolds) are discussed. A new notion of Kaehler homomorphism is introduced. This is a homomorphism induced by a holomorphic map between these types of manifolds. Some obstructions for a homomorphism to be Kaehler are discussed. Among these is the main result on the vanishing of a certain cohomology class associated to such map. This is reduced to the decomposition theorem for perverse sheaves suitably extended to Kaehler orbifolds.

Beilinson-Hodge cycles on semiabelian varieties

Beilinson conjectured that all rational cycles of type (q,q) on the qth cohomology of a smooth complex algebraic variety should come from motivic cohomology. The purpose of this note is to prove this when the variety is a semiabelian variety or a product of curves. The proof is based on the study of invariants under the Mumford-Tate group.
