Moduli of elliptic surfaces of Kodaira dimension one fibered over rational curves

In this article, we construct an infinite sequence of irreducible components of Kollár--Shepherd-Barron (KSB-) moduli spaces of surfaces of arbitrarily large volumes, and describe the boundary of each component completely. Moreover, we describe the stable reduction steps in finding the KSB-limits in an explicit combinatorial way. Our main approach is to study the moduli spaces of elliptic surfaces with Kodaira dimension one, fibered over rational curves, using the techniques of wall-crossing for KSBA moduli and twisted stable maps.

Root stack valuative criterion for good moduli spaces

We prove a root stack valuative criterion for good moduli space maps and for gerbes for reductive groups under some mild assumptions on the residue characteristic. We give several applications to parahoric extension for torsors, rational points on stacks, gerbes and homogeneous spaces, and the geometry of fibrations.

Symmetric powers of null motivic Euler characteristic

Let k be a field of characteristic not 2. We conjecture that if X is a quasi-projective k-variety with trivial motivic Euler characteristic, then Sym$^n$X has trivial motivic Euler characteristic for all n. Conditional on this conjecture, we show that the Grothendieck--Witt ring admits a power structure that is compatible with the motivic Euler characteristic and the power structure on the Grothendieck ring of varieties. We then discuss how these conditional results would imply an enrichment of Göttsche's formula for the Euler characteristics of Hilbert schemes.

Proper splittings and projectivity for good moduli spaces

We show that any good moduli space $π: \mathcal{X} \to Y$ has a splitting after a proper, generically finite covering of $Y$. As an application we generalize Kollár's ampleness lemma to give a criterion for projectivity of a good moduli space.

Height moduli on cyclotomic stacks and counting elliptic curves over function fields

For proper stacks, unlike schemes, there is a distinction between rational and integral points. Moreover, rational points have extra automorphism groups. We show that these distinctions exactly account for the lower order main terms appearing in precise counts of elliptic curves over function fields, answering a question of Venkatesh in this case. More generally, using the theory of twisted stable maps and the stacky height functions recently introduced by Ellenberg, Zureick-Brown, and the third author, we construct finite type moduli spaces which parametrize rational points of fixed height on a large class of stacks, so-called cyclotomic stacks. The main tool is a correspondence between rational points, twisted maps and weighted linear series. Along the way, we obtain the Northcott property as well as a generalization of Tate's algorithm for cyclotomic stacks, and compute the exact motives of these moduli spaces for weighted projective stacks.

Moduli of boundary polarized Calabi-Yau pairs

We develop the moduli theory of boundary polarized CY pairs, which are slc Calabi-Yau pairs $(X,D)$ such that $D$ is ample. The motivation for studying this moduli problem is to construct a moduli space at the Calabi-Yau wall interpolating between certain K-moduli and KSBA moduli spaces. We prove that the moduli stack of boundary polarized CY pairs is S-complete, $Θ$-reductive, and satisfies the existence part of the valuative criterion for properness, which are steps towards constructing a proper moduli space. A key obstacle in this theory is that the irreducible components of the moduli stack are not in general of finite type. Despite this issue, in the case of pairs $(X,D)$ where $X$ is a degeneration of $\mathbb{P}^2$, we construct a projective moduli space on which the Hodge line bundle is ample. As a consequence, we complete the proof of a conjecture of Prokhorov and Shokurov in relative dimension two.

Smoothability of relative stable maps to stacky curves

Using log geometry, we study smoothability of genus zero twisted stable maps to stacky curves relative to a collection of marked points. One application is to smoothing semi-log canonical fibered surfaces with marked singular fibers.

Wall crossing for moduli of stable log pairs

We prove, under suitable conditions, that there exist wall-crossing and reduction morphisms for moduli spaces of stable log pairs in all dimensions as one varies the coefficients of the divisor.

Compact moduli of elliptic K3 surfaces

We construct various modular compactifications of the space of elliptic K3 surfaces using tools from the minimal model program, and explicitly describe the surfaces parametrized by their boundaries. The coarse spaces of our constructed compactifications admit morphisms to the Satake-Baily-Borel compactification. Finally, we show that one of our spaces is smooth with coarse space the GIT quotient of pairs of Weierstrass K3 surfaces with a chosen fiber.

Stable pairs with a twist and gluing morphisms for moduli of surfaces

We propose an alternative definition for families of stable pairs $(X,D)$ over a possibly non-reduced base when $D$ is reduced, by replacing $(X,D)$ with an appropriate orbifold pair $(\mathcal X,\mathcal D)$. This definition of a stable family ends up being equivalent to previous ones, but has the advantage of being more amenable to the tools of deformation theory. Moreover, adjunction for $(\mathcal X,\mathcal D)$ holds on the nose; there is no correction term coming from the different. This leads to the existence of functorial gluing morphisms for families of stable surfaces and functorial morphisms from $(n + 1)$ dimensional stable pairs to $n$ dimensional polarized orbispace. As an application, we study the deformation theory of some surface pairs.

Moduli of double covers and degree one del Pezzo surfaces

Given a degree one del Pezzo surface with canonical singularities, the linear series generated by twice the anti-canonical divisor exhibits the surface as the double cover of the quadric cone branched along a sextic curve. It is natural to ask if this description extends to the boundary of a compactification of the moduli space of degree one del Pezzo surfaces. The goal of this paper is to show that this is indeed the case. In particular, we give an explicit classification of the boundary of the moduli space of anti-canonically polarized broken del Pezzo surfaces of degree one as double covers of degenerations of the quadric cone.

Moduli of weighted stable elliptic surfaces and invariance of log plurigenera

This is the third paper in a series of work on weighted stable elliptic surfaces - elliptic fibrations with section and marked fibers weighted between zero and one. Motivated by Hassett's weighted pointed stable curves, we use the log minimal model program to construct compact moduli spaces parameterizing these objects. Moreoever, we show that the domain of weights admits a wall and chamber structure, we describe the induced wall crossing morphisms on the moduli spaces as the weight vector varies, and describe the surfaces that appear on the boundary of the moduli space. The main technical result is a proof of invariance of log plurigenera for slc elliptic surface pairs with arbitrary weights.

Motivic Hilbert zeta functions of curves are rational

The motivic Hilbert zeta function of a variety is the generating function for classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties of Hilbert schemes of points of the variety. In this paper, the motivic Hilbert zeta function of a reduced curve is shown to be rational.

The SYZ conjecture via homological mirror symmetry

These are expository notes based on a talk given at the Superschool on derived categories and D-branes at University of Alberta in July of 2016. The goal of these notes is to give a motivated introduction to the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) conjecture from the point of view of homological mirror symmetry.

Log canonical models of elliptic surfaces

We give a classification of the log canonical models of elliptic surface pairs consisting of an elliptic fibration, a section, and a weighted sum of marked fibers. In particular, we show how the log canonical models depend on the choice of the weights. We describe a wall and chamber decomposition of the space of weights based on how the log canonical model changes. In addition, we give a generalized formula for the canonical bundle of an elliptic surface with section and marked fibers. This is the first step in constructing compactifcations of moduli spaces of elliptic surfaces using the minimal model program.

Moduli of fibered surface pairs from twisted stable maps

We use the theory of twisted stable maps to Deligne-Mumford stacks to construct compactifications of the moduli space of pairs $(X \to C, S + F)$ where $X \to C$ is a fibered surface, $S$ is a sum of sections, $F$ is a sum of marked fibers, and $(X, S + F)$ is a stable pair in the sense of the minimal model program. This generalizes the work of Abramovich-Vistoli, who compactified the moduli space of fibered surfaces without marked fibers. Furthermore, we compare our compactification to Alexeev's space of stable maps and the KSBA compactification of stable pairs. As an application, we describe the boundary of the compactification of the moduli space of elliptic surfaces.

The tangent space of the punctual Hilbert scheme

The purpose of this paper is to study the Zariski tangent space of the punctual Hilbert scheme parametrizing subschemes of a smooth surface which are supported at a single point. We give a lower bound on the dimension of the tangent space in general and show the bound is sharp for subschemes of the affine plane cut out by monomials. Furthermore for monomial subschemes we give an explicit combinatorial formula for the dimension of the tangent space.
