A String Theory Explanation for Quantum Chaos in the Hadronic Spectrum

In the 1950's Wigner and collaborators provided an explanation for the spectrum of hadronic excitations in terms of Random Matrix Theory. In the 1980's it was understood that some hadronic spectral properties were generic to systems whose classical limit is chaotic. We use string theory to demonstrate explicitly how, under very general conditions, recent holographic models of strong interactions have a spectrum compatible with Wigner's conjecture.

Rigid Supersymmetric Backgrounds of Minimal Off-Shell Supergravity

We discuss various aspects of rigid supersymmetry within minimal N=1 off-shell supergravity using the old and new minimal formulations both in Lorentzian and Euclidean signatures. In particular, we construct all rigid supersymmetry backgrounds with a hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector. In the Lorentzian signature we show that AdS_4 provides a rigid supersymmetric background in both formulations albeit with different amounts of preserved supersymmetry. In the Euclidean signature we find new backgrounds of the old-minimal supergravity, including squashed four-spheres and a half-BPS version of flat space.

A Holographic Chiral p_x + ip_y Superconductor

Using a string inspired model we construct gravity duals generalizing px and p_x + ip_y superconductors. Introducing a Chern-Simons coupling in the gravity side we demonstrate the ability to control which phase dominates at low temperatures, and focus on the chiral p_x + ip_y phase. We study the fermionic spectral function and establish that the behavior is rather different from the standard p-wave two-nodes model.

On Field Theory Thermalization from Gravitational Collapse

Motivated by its field theory interpretation, we study gravitational collapse of a minimally coupled massless scalar field in Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant. After demonstrating the accuracy of the numerical algorithm for the questions we are interested in, we investigate various aspects of the apparent horizon formation. In particular, we study the time and radius of the apparent horizon formed as functions of the initial Gaussian profile for the scalar field. We comment on several aspects of the dual field theory picture.

Weakly Renormalized Near 1/16 SUSY Fermi Liquid Operators in N = 4 SYM

We discuss a class of Fermi Liquid Operators in N = 4 SYM. We show that these operators are eigenstates of the full quantum dilatation operator. We compute their 1 and 2 loop anomalous dimensions, and show that, similar to Fermi liquids in condensed matter systems, these corrections are suppressed by an arbitrarily small parameter, which is the equivalent of one over the Fermi energy. These operators are, at the classical level, descendants of 1/16 BPS operators, with some scaling properties similar to those of the 1/16 Black Holes in AdS_5.

Thermal AdS(3), BTZ and competing winding modes condensation

We study the thermal physics of AdS(3) and the BTZ black hole when embedded in String theory. The exact calculation of the Hagedorn temperature in TAdS(3) is reinterpreted as the appearance of a winding tachyon both in AdS(3) and BTZ. We construct a dual framework for analyzing the phases of the system. In this dual framework, tachyon condensation and geometric capping appear on the same footing, bridging the usual gap of connecting tachyon condensation to modifications of geometry. This allows us to construct in a natural way a candidate for the unstable phase, analogous to a small black hole in higher dimensions. Additional peculiar effects associated with the Hagedorn temperature and the Hawking-Page transition, some to do with the asymptotic structure of AdS(3) and some with strong curvature effects, are analyzed and explained.

A Short Review of Time Dependent Solutions and Space-like Singularities in String Theory

These lecture notes provide a short review of the status of time dependent backgrounds in String theory, and in particular those that contain space-like singularities. Despite considerable efforts, we do not have yet a full and compelling picture of such backgrounds. We review some of the various attempts to understand these singularities via generalizations of the BKL dynamics, using worldsheet methods and using non-perturbative tools such as the AdS/CFT correspondence and M(atrix) theory. These lecture notes are based on talks given at Cargese 06 and the dead-sea conference 06.

A Fermi Surface Model for Large Supersymmetric AdS_5 Black Holes

We identify a large family of 1/16 BPS operators in N=4 SYM that qualitatively reproduce the relations between charge, angular momentum and entropy in regular supersymmetric AdS_5 black holes when the main contribution to their masses is given by their angular momentum.

Flow of Geometries and Instantons on the Null Orbifold

We study condensation of twisted sector states in the null orbifold geometry. As the singularity is time-dependent, we probe it using D-Instantons. We present evidence that the null-orbifold flows to the $Z_N$ orbifold. We also comment on the subtleties of quantizing the closed superstring in this background.

The Effective Potential of the N=0* Yang-Mills Theory

We study the \N=4 SYM theory with SU(N) gauge group in the large N limit, deformed by giving equal mass to the four adjoint fermions. With this modification, a potential is dynamically generated for the six scalars in the theory, ϕ^i. We show that the resulting theory is stable (perturbatively in the 't Hooft coupling), and that there are some indications that <ϕ>=0 is the vacuum of the theory. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we compare the results to the corresponding supergravity computation, i.e. brane probing a deformed AdS_5 x S^5 background, and we find qualitative agreement.
