Spontaneous fission of superheavy nucleus $^{286}$Fl

The decimal logarithm of spontaneous fission half-life of the superheavy nucleus $^{286}$Fl experimentally determined is $\log_{10} T_f^{exp} (s) = -0.632$. We present a method to calculate the half-life based on the cranking inertia and the deformation energy, functions of two independent surface coordinates, using the best asymmetric two center shell model. In the first stage we study the statics. At a given mass asymmetry up to about $η=0.5$ the potential barrier has a two hump shape, but for larger $η$ it has only one hump. The touching point deformation energy versus mass asymmetry shows the three minima, produced by shell effects, corresponding to three decay modes: spontaneous fission, cluster decay and $α$~decay. The least action trajectory is determined in the plane $(R,η)$ where $R$ is the separation distance of the fission fragments and $η$ is the mass asymmetry. We may find a sequence of several trajectories one of which gives the least action. The parametrization with two deformation coordinates $(R,η)$ and the radius of the light fragment, $R_2$, exponentially decreasing with $R$ is compared with the simpler one, in which $R_2$~=constant. The latter is closer to the reality and reminds us about the alpha or cluster preformation at the nuclear surface.

Potential energy surfaces for cluster emitting nuclei

Potential energy surfaces are calculated by using the most advanced asymmetric two-center shell model allowing to obtain shell and pairing corrections which are added to the Yukawa-plus-exponential model deformation energy. Shell effects are of crucial importance for experimental observation of spontaneous disintegration by heavy ion emission. Results for 222Ra, 232U, 236Pu and 242Cm illustrate the main ideas and show for the first time for a cluster emitter a potential barrier obtained by using the macroscopic-microscopic method.

Alexandru Proca (1897--1955) the Great Physicist

We commemorate 50 years from A. Proca's death. Proca equation is a relativistic wave equation for a massive spin-1 particle. The weak interaction is transmitted by such kind of vector bosons. Also vector fields are used to describe spin-1 mesons (e.g. $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons). After a brief biography, the paper presents an introduction into relativistic field theory, including Klein-Gordon, Dirac, and Maxwell fields, allowing to understand this scientific achievement and some consequences for the theory of strong interactions as well as for Maxwell-Proca and Einstein-Proca theories. The modern approach of the nonzero photon mass and the superluminal radiation field are also mentioned.
