Squeezing in driven bimodal Bose-Einstein Condensates: Erratic driving versus noise

We study the interplay of squeezing and phase randomization near the hyperbolic instability of a two-site Bose-Hubbard model in the Josephson interaction regime. We obtain results for the quantum Zeno suppression of squeezing, far beyond the previously found short time behavior. More importantly, we contrast the expected outcome with the case where randomization is induced by erratic driving with the same fluctuations as the quantum noise source, finding significant differences. These are related to the distribution of the squeezing factor, which has log-normal characteristics: hence its average is significantly different from its median due to the occurrence of rare events.

Non-adiabatic pumping in an oscillating-piston model

We consider the prototypical "piston pump" operating on a ring, where a circulating current is induced by means of an AC driving. This can be regarded as a generalized Fermi-Ulam model, incorporating a finite-height moving wall (piston) and non trivial topology (ring). The amount of particles transported per cycle is determined by a layered structure of phase-space. Each layer is characterized by a different drift velocity. We discuss the differences compared with the adiabatic and Boltzmann pictures, and highlight the significance of the "diabatic" contribution that might lead to a counter-stirring effect.

The non-equilibrium steady state of sparse systems with nontrivial topology

We study the steady state of a multiply-connected system that is driven out of equilibrium by a sparse perturbation. The prototype example is an $N$-site ring coupled to a thermal bath, driven by a stationary source that induces transitions with log-wide distributed rates. An induced current arises, which is controlled by the strength of the driving, and an associated topological term appears in the expression for the energy absorption rate. Due to the sparsity, the crossover from linear response to saturation is mediated by an intermediate regime, where the current is exponentially small in $\sqrt{N}$, which is related to the work of Sinai on "random walk in a random environment".

Inelastic chaotic scattering on a Bose-Einstein condensate

We devise a microscopic scattering approach to probe the excitation spectrum of a Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that the experimentally accessible scattering cross section exhibits universal Ericson fluctuations, with characteristic properties rooted in the underlying classical field equations.

Matter-wave scattering on a BEC in a double-well potential

We study the inelastic scattering of a probe particle on a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a double-well potential. We identify prominent signatures of the underlying mean-field phase space in the scattering signal and derive an analytical expression for the inelastic scattering cross section.

"Weak Quantum Chaos" and its resistor network modeling

Weakly chaotic or weakly interacting systems have a wide regime where the common random matrix theory modeling does not apply. As an example we consider cold atoms in a nearly integrable optical billiard with displaceable wall ("piston"). The motion is completely chaotic but with small Lyapunov exponent. The Hamiltonian matrix does not look like one taken from a Gaussian ensemble, but rather it is very sparse and textured. This can be characterized by parameters $s$ and $g$ that reflect the percentage of large elements, and their connectivity, respectively. For $g$ we use a resistor network calculation that has a direct relation to the semi-linear response characteristics of the system, hence leading to a novel prediction regarding the rate of heating of cold atoms in optical billiards with vibrating walls.

Non-equilibrium steady state of sparse systems

A resistor-network picture of transitions is appropriate for the study of energy absorption by weakly chaotic or weakly interacting driven systems. Such "sparse" systems reach a novel non-equilibrium steady state (NESS) once coupled to a bath. In the stochastic case there is an analogy to the physics of percolating glassy systems, and an extension of the fluctuation-dissipation phenomenology is proposed. In the mesoscopic case the quantum NESS might differ enormously from the stochastic NESS, with saturation temperature determined by the sparsity. A toy model where the sparsity of the system is modeled using a log-normal random ensemble is analyzed.

Quantum dynamics in the bosonic Josephson junction

We employ a semiclassical picture to study dynamics in a bosonic Josephson junction with various initial conditions. Phase-diffusion of coherent preparations in the Josephson regime is shown to depend on the initial relative phase between the two condensates. For initially incoherent condensates, we find a universal value for the buildup of coherence in the Josephson regime. In addition, we contrast two seemingly similar on-separatrix coherent preparations, finding striking differences in their convergence to classicality as the number of particles increases.

Quantum response of weakly chaotic systems

Chaotic systems, that have a small Lyapunov exponent, do not obey the common random matrix theory predictions within a wide "weak quantum chaos" regime. This leads to a novel prediction for the rate of heating for cold atoms in optical billiards with vibrating walls. The Hamiltonian matrix of the driven system does not look like one from a Gaussian ensemble, but rather it is very sparse. This sparsity can be characterized by parameters $s$ and $g$ that reflect the percentage of large elements, and their connectivity respectively. For $g$ we use a resistor network calculation that has direct relation to the semi-linear response characteristics of the system.

Quantum anomalies and linear response theory

The analysis of diffusive energy spreading in quantized chaotic driven systems, leads to a universal paradigm for the emergence of a quantum anomaly. In the classical approximation a driven chaotic system exhibits stochastic-like diffusion in energy space with a coefficient $D$ that is proportional to the intensity $ε^2$ of the driving. In the corresponding quantized problem the coherent transitions are characterized by a generalized Wigner time $t_ε$, and a self-generated (intrinsic) dephasing process leads to non-linear dependence of $D$ on $ε^2$.

Random-matrix modeling of semi-linear response, the generalized variable range hopping picture, and the conductance of mesoscopic rings

Semi-linear response theory determines the absorption coefficient of a driven system using a resistor network calculation: Each unperturbed energy level of a particle in a vibrating trap, or of an electron in a mesoscopic ring, is regarded as a node ($n$) of the network; The transition rates ($w_{mn}$) between the nodes are regarded as the elements of a random matrix that describes the network. If the size-distribution of the connecting elements is wide (e.g. log-normal-like rather than Gaussian-like) the result for the absorption coefficient differs enormously from the conventional Kubo prediction of linear response theory. We use a generalized variable range hopping scheme for the analysis. In particular we apply this approach to obtain practical approximations for the conductance of mesoscopic rings. In this context Mott's picture of diffusion and localization is revisited.

Quantum decay into a non-flat continuum

We study the decay of a prepared state into non-flat continuum. We find that the survival probability $P(t)$ might exhibit either stretched-exponential or power-law decay, depending on non-universal features of the model. Still there is a universal characteristic time $t_0$ that does not depend on the functional form. It is only for a flat continuum that we get a robust exponential decay that is insensitive to the nature of the intra-continuum couplings. The analysis highlights the co-existence of perturbative and non-perturbative features in the local density of states, and the non-linear dependence of $1/t_0$ on the strength of the coupling.

Anomalous decay of a prepared state due to non-Ohmic coupling to the continuum

We study the decay of a prepared state $E_0$ into a continuum {E_k} in the case of non-Ohmic models. This means that the coupling is $|V_{k,0}| \propto |E_k-E_0|^{s-1}$ with $s \ne 1$. We find that irrespective of model details there is a universal generalized Wigner time $t_0$ that characterizes the evolution of the survival probability $P_0(t)$. The generic decay behavior which is implied by rate equation phenomenology is a slowing down stretched exponential, reflecting the gradual resolution of the bandprofile. But depending on non-universal features of the model a power-law decay might take over: it is only for an Ohmic coupling to the continuum that we get a robust exponential decay that is insensitive to the nature of the intra-continuum couplings. The analysis highlights the co-existence of perturbative and non-perturbative features in the dynamics. It turns out that there are special circumstances in which $t_0$ is reflected in the spreading process and not only in the survival probability, contrary to the naive linear response theory expectation.

Nonlinear phase-dynamics in a driven Bosonic Josephson junction

We study the collective dynamics of a driven two mode Bose-Hubbard model in the Josephson interaction regime. The classical phase-space is mixed, with chaotic and regular components, that determine the dynamical nature of the fringe-visibility. For weak off-resonant drive, where the chaotic component is small, the many-body dynamics corresponds to that of a Kapitza pendulum, with the relative-phase $φ$ between the condensates playing the role of the pendulum angle. Using a master equation approach we show that the modulation of the inter-site potential barrier stabilizes the $φ=π$ 'inverted pendulum' coherent state, and protects the fringe visibility.

Quantum transport and counting statistics in closed systems

A current can be induced in a closed device by changing control parameters. The amount $Q$ of particles that are transported via a path of motion, is characterized by its expectation value $ $, and by its variance $Var(Q)$. We show that quantum mechanics invalidates some common conceptions about this statistics. We first consider the process of a double path crossing, which is the prototype example for counting statistics in multiple path non-trivial geometry. We find out that contrary to the common expectation, this process does not lead to partition noise. Then we analyze a full stirring cycle that consists of a sequence of two Landau-Zener crossings. We find out that quite generally counting statistics and occupation statistics become unrelated, and that quantum interference affects them in different ways.

The dephasing rate formula in the many body context

We suggest a straightforward approach to the calculation of the dephasing rate in a fermionic system, which correctly keeps track of the crucial physics of Pauli blocking. Starting from Fermi's golden rule, the dephasing rate can be written as an integral over the frequency transferred between system and environment, weighted by their respective spectral densities. We show that treating the full many-fermion system instead of a single particle automatically enforces the Pauli principle. Furthermore, we explain the relation to diagrammatics. Finally, we show how to treat the more involved strong-coupling case when interactions appreciably modify the spectra. This is relevant for the situation in disordered metals, where screening is important.

Interaction-induced dynamical phase locking of Bose-Einstein condensates

We show that interactions result in the emergence of a {\it definite} relative-phase between two initially incoherent Bose-Einstein condensates. The many-realization interference fringe visibility is universal at $g_{12}^{(1)}\sim1/3$ throughout the Josephson interaction regime, as evident from a semiclassical picture. Other types of incoherent preparation yield qualitatively different coherence dynamics.

Purely electric spin pumping in one-dimension

We show theoretically that a simple one dimensional system (such as metallic wire) can display quantum spin pumping possibly without pushing any charge. It is achieved by applying two slowly varying orthogonal gate electric fields on different sections of the wire, thereby generating local spin-orbit (Rashba) terms such that unitary transformations at different places do not commute. This construction is a unique manifestation of a spin-orbit observable effect in purely one dimensional systems with potentials respecting time-reversal symmetry.
