Variance of real zeros of random orthogonal polynomials

We determine the asymptotics for the variance of the number of zeros of random linear combinations of orthogonal polynomials of degree $\leq n$ in subintervals $\left [ a,b\right ] $ of the support of the underlying orthogonality measure $μ$. We show that, as $n\rightarrow \infty $, this variance is asymptotic to $cn$, for some explicit constant $c>0$.

An Update on Local Universality Limits for Correlation Functions Generated by Unitary Ensembles

We survey the current status of universality limits for $m$-point correlation functions in the bulk and at the edge for unitary ensembles, primarily when the limiting kernels are Airy, Bessel, or Sine kernels. In particular, we consider underlying measures on compact intervals, and fixed and varying exponential weights, as well as universality limits for a variety of orthogonal systems. The scope of the survey is quite narrow: we do not consider $β$ ensembles for $β\neq 2$, nor general Hermitian matrices with independent entries, let alone more general settings. We include some open problems.

Simultaneous Gaussian quadrature for Angelesco systems

We investigate simultaneous Gaussian quadrature for two integrals of the same function $f$ but on two disjoint intervals. The quadrature nodes are zeros of a type II multiple orthogonal polynomial for an Angelesco system. We recall some known results for the quadrature nodes and the quadrature weights and prove some new results about the convergence of the quadrature formulas. Furthermore we give some estimates of the quadrature weights. Our results are based on a vector equilibrium problem in potential theory and weighted polynomial approximation.

Expected number of real zeros for random orthogonal polynomials

We study the expected number of real zeros for random linear combinations of orthogonal polynomials. It is well known that Kac polynomials, spanned by monomials with i.i.d. Gaussian coefficients, have only $(2/π+ o(1))\log{n}$ expected real zeros in terms of the degree $n$. If the basis is given by the orthonormal polynomials associated with a compactly supported Borel measure on the real line, or associated with a Freud weight defined on the whole real line, then random linear combinations have $n/\sqrt{3} + o(n)$ expected real zeros. We prove that the same asymptotic relation holds for all random orthogonal polynomials on the real line associated with a large class of weights, and give local results on the expected number of real zeros. We also show that the counting measures of properly scaled zeros of these random polynomials converge weakly to either the Ullman distribution or the arcsine distribution.

Rogers-Ramanujan and the Baker-Gammel-Wills (Padé) conjecture

In 1961, Baker, Gammel and Wills conjectured that for functions $f$ meromorphic in the unit ball, a subsequence of its diagonal Padé approximants converges uniformly in compact subsets of the ball omitting poles of $f$. There is also apparently a cruder version of the conjecture due to Padé himself, going back to the earlier twentieth century. We show here that for carefully chosen $q$ on the unit circle, the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction $$1+\frac{qz|}{|1}+\frac{q^{2}z|}{|1}+\frac{q^{3}z|}{|1}+... $$ provides a counterexample to the conjecture. We also highlight some other interesting phenomena displayed by this fraction.
