Quantum Information Science and Technology for Nuclear Physics. Input into U.S. Long-Range Planning, 2023

In preparation for the 2023 NSAC Long Range Plan (LRP), members of the Nuclear Science community gathered to discuss the current state of, and plans for further leveraging opportunities in, QIST in NP research at the Quantum Information Science for U.S. Nuclear Physics Long Range Planning workshop, held in Santa Fe, New Mexico on January 31 - February 1, 2023. The workshop included 45 in-person participants and 53 remote attendees. The outcome of the workshop identified strategic plans and requirements for the next 5-10 years to advance quantum sensing and quantum simulations within NP, and to develop a diverse quantum-ready workforce. The plans include resolutions endorsed by the participants to address the compelling scientific opportunities at the intersections of NP and QIST. These endorsements are aligned with similar affirmations by the LRP Computational Nuclear Physics and AI/ML Workshop, the Nuclear Structure, Reactions, and Astrophysics LRP Town Hall, and the Fundamental Symmetries, Neutrons, and Neutrinos LRP Town Hall communities.

The Role of the Electron Mass in Damping Chiral Magnetic Instability in Supernova and Neutron Stars

We show that the nonzero electron mass plays a critical role in determining the magnetic properties of neutron stars, making it impossible to generate the chiral charge density needed to trigger a strong chiral magnetic instability during the core collapse of supernovae. This instability has been proposed as a plausible mechanism for generating extremely large helical magnetic fields in neutron stars at their birth; the mechanism relies on the generation of a large non-equilibrium chiral charge density via electron capture reactions that selectively deplete left-handed electrons during core-collapse and the early evolution of the protoneutron star. Our calculation shows that the electron chirality violation rate induced by Rutherford scattering, despite being suppressed by the smallness of the electron mass relative to the electron chemical potential, is still fast compared to the weak interaction electron capture rate. The resulting asymmetry between right and left-handed electron densities is therefore never able to attain an astrophysically relevant magnitude.

Sign problems, noise, and chiral symmetry breaking in a QCD-like theory

The Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model reduced to 2+1 dimensions has two different path integral formulations: at finite chemical potential one formulation has a severe sign problem similar to that found in QCD, while the other does not. At large N, where N is the number of flavors, one can compute the probability distributions of fermion correlators analytically in both formulations. In the former case one finds a broad distribution with small mean; in the latter one finds a heavy tailed positive distribution amenable to the cumulant expansion techniques developed in earlier work. We speculate on the implications of this model for QCD.

Elucidating the sign problem through noise distributions

Due to the presence of light pions in the theory, lattice QCD at finite densities suffers from issues with noise in both grand canonical and canonical formulations. We study two different formulations of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model reduced to 2+1 dimensions at large N, where N is the number of flavors. At finite chemical potential one formulation has a severe sign problem and a fermion correlator which displays a broad probability distribution with small mean. In the other we find no sign problem and a distribution amenable to the cumulant expansion techniques developed in earlier work.
