Equilibrium states for the massive Sine-Gordon theory in the Lorentzian signature

In this paper we investigate the massive Sine-Gordon model in the ultraviolet finite regime in thermal states over the two-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. We combine recently developed methods of perturbative algebraic quantum field theory with techniques developed in the realm of constructive quantum field theory over Euclidean spacetimes to construct the correlation functions of the equilibrium state of the Sine-Gordon theory in the adiabatic limit. First of all, the observables of the Sine-Gordon theory are seen as functionals over the free configurations and are obtained as a suitable combination of the S-matrices of the interaction Lagrangian restricted to compact spacetime regions over the free massive theory. These S-matrices are given as power series in the coupling constant with values in the algebra of fields over the free massive theory. Adapting techniques like conditioning and inverse conditioning to spacetimes with Lorentzian signature, we prove that these power series converge when evaluated on a generic field configuration. The latter observation implies convergence in the strong operator topology in the GNS representations of the considered states. In the second part of the paper, adapting the cluster expansion technique to the Lorentzian case, we prove that the correlation functions of the interacting equilibrium state at finite temperature (KMS state) can be constructed also in the adiabatic limit, where the interaction Lagrangian is supported everywhere in space.

Trapped bosons, thermodynamic limit and condensation: a study in the framework of resolvent algebras

The virtues of resolvent algebras, compared to other approaches for the treatment of canonical quantum systems, are exemplified by infinite systems of non-relativistic bosons. Within this framework, equilibrium states of trapped and untrapped bosons are defined on a fixed C*-algebra for all physically meaningful values of the temperature and chemical potential. Moreover, the algebra provides the tools for their analysis without having to rely on 'ad hoc' prescriptions for the test of pertinent features, such as the appearance of Bose-Einstein condensates. The method is illustrated in case of non-interacting systems in any number of spatial dimensions and sheds new light on the appearance of condensates. Yet the framework also covers interactions and thus provides a universal basis for the analysis of bosonic systems.

The G-wavefront set and the twisted convolution product

We give a sufficient criterion for the existence of the twisted convolution product of two tempered distributions as a tempered distribution, and we list examples of algebras with respect to this and related products contained in $\mathscr S^\prime$.

Local nets of von Neumann algebras in the Sine-Gordon model

The Haag-Kastler net of local von Neumann algebras is constructed in the ultraviolet finite regime of the sine-Gordon model, and its equivalence with the massive Thirring model is proved. In contrast to other authors, we do not add an auxiliary mass term, and we work completely in Lorentzian signature. The construction is based on the functional formalism for perturbative Algebraic Quantum Field Theory together with estimates originally derived within Constructive Quantum Field Theory and adapted to Lorentzian signature. The paper extends previous work by two of us.

The Quantum Sine Gordon model in perturbative AQFT

We study the Sine-Gordon model with Minkowski signature in the framework of perturbative algebraic quantum field theory. We calculate the vertex operator algebra braiding property. We prove that in the finite regime of the model, the expectation value - with respect to the vacuum or a Hadamard state - of the Epstein Glaser S-matrix and the interacting current or the field respectively, both given as formal power series, converge.

Quantum Spacetime and Algebraic Quantum Field Theory

We review the investigations on the quantum structure of spactime, to be found at the Planck scale if one takes into account the operational limitations to localization of events which result from the concurrence of Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity. We also discuss the different approaches to (perturbative) Quantum Field Theory on Quantum Spacetime, and some of the possible cosmological consequences.

On-shell extension of distributions

We consider distributions on $\R^n\setminus{0}$ which satisfy a given set of partial differential equations and provide criteria for the existence of extensions to $\R^n$ that satisfy the same set of equations on $\R^n$. We use the results to construct distributions satisfying specific renormalisation conditions in the Epstein and Glaser approach to perturbative quantum field theory. Contrary to other approaches, we provide a unified apporach to treat Lorentz covariance, invariance under global gauge group and almost homogeneity, as well as discrete symmetries. We show that all such symmetries can be recovered by applying a linear map defined for all degrees of divergence. Using similar techniques, we find a relation between on-shell and off-shell time-ordered products involving higher derivatives of the fields.

The effective theory of strings

We show that the Nambu-Goto string, and its higher dimensional generalizations, can be quantized, in the sense of an effective theory, in any dimension of the target space. The crucial point is to consider expansions around classical string configurations. We are using tools from perturbative algebraic quantum field theory, quantum field theory on curved spacetimes, and the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. Our model has some similarities with the Lüscher-Weisz string, but we allow for arbitrary classical background string configurations and keep the diffeomorphism invariance.

String Quantization and the Shuffle Hopf Algebra

The Poisson algebra $\mathfrak h$ of invariants of the Nambu-Goto string, which was first introduced by K. Pohlmeyer in 1982, is described using the Shuffle Hopf algebra. In particular, an underlying auxiliary Lie algebra is reformulated in terms of the image of the first Eulerian idempotent of the Shuffle Hopf algebra. This facilitates the comparison of different approaches to the quantization of $\mathfrak h$.

The ultraviolet infrared mixing problem on the noncommutative Moyal space

It is shown that the mixing of ultraviolet and infrared divergences in quantum field theory on Moyal space is not an artefact of the Euclidean framework, but occurs also in the Hamiltonian setting when the interaction is given in terms of the Moyal twisted convolution product. The mixing mechanism in both settings is examined from the point of view of microlocal analysis and it is shown that they are different from one another.

Quantum Geometry on Quantum Spacetime: Distance, Area and Volume Operators

We develop the first steps towards an analysis of geometry on the quantum spacetime proposed in [1]. The homogeneous elements of the universal differential algebra are naturally identified with operators living in tensor powers of Quantum Spacetime; this allows us to compute their spectra. In particular, we consider operators that can be interpreted as distances, areas, 3- and 4-volumes. The Minkowski distance operator between two independent events is shown to have pure Lebesgue spectrum with infinite multiplicity. The Euclidean distance operator is shown to have spectrum bounded below by a constant of the order of the Planck length. The corresponding statement is proved also for both the space-space and space-time area operators, as well as for the Euclidean length of the vector representing the 3-volume operators. However, the space 3-volume operator (the time component of that vector) is shown to have spectrum equal to the whole complex plane. All these operators are normal, while the distance operators are also selfadjoint. The Lorentz invariant spacetime volume operator, representing the 4- volume spanned by five independent events, is shown to be normal. Its spectrum is pure point with a finite distance (of the order of the fourth power of the Planck length) away from the origin. The mathematical formalism apt to these problems is developed and its relation to a general formulation of Gauge Theories on Quantum Spaces is outlined. As a byproduct, a Hodge Duality between the absolute dif- ferential and the Hochschild boundary is pointed out.

Schwinger functions in noncommutative quantum field theory

It is shown that the $n$-point functions of scalar massive free fields on the noncommutative Minkowski space are distributions which are boundary values of analytic functions. Contrary to what one might expect, this construction does not provide a connection to the popular traditional Euclidean approach to noncommutative field theory (unless the time variable is assumed to commute). Instead, one finds Schwinger functions with twistings involving only momenta that are on the mass-shell. This explains why renormalization in the traditional Euclidean noncommutative framework crudely differs from renormalization in the Minkowskian regime.

The shuffle Hopf algebra and quasiplanar Wick products

The operator valued distributions which arise in quantum field theory on the noncommutative Minkowski space can be symbolized by a generalization of chord diagrams, the dotted chord diagrams. In this framework, the combinatorial aspects of quasiplanar Wick products are understood in terms of the shuffle Hopf algebra of dotted chord diagrams, leading to an algebraic characterization of quasiplanar Wick products as a convolution. Moreover, it is shown that the distributions do not provide a weight system for universal knot invariants.

Locally Noncommutative Space-Times

Localized noncommutative structures for manifolds with connection are constructed based on the use of vertical star products. The model's main feature is that two points that are far away from each other will not be subject to a deviation from classical geometry while space-time becomes noncommutative for pairs of points that are close to one another.

The ultraviolet-finite Hamiltonian approach on the noncommutative Minkowski space

This is an exposition of joint work with S. Doplicher, K. Fredenhagen, and G. Piacitelli on field theory on the noncommutative Minkowski space. The limit of coinciding points is modified compared to ordinary field theory in a suitable way which allows for the definition of so-called regularized field monomials as interaction terms. Employing these in the Hamiltonian formalism results in an ultraviolet finite S-matrix.
