Irresponsible AI: big tech's influence on AI research and associated impacts

The accelerated development, deployment and adoption of artificial intelligence systems has been fuelled by the increasing presence of big tech in the AI field. This trend has been accompanied by growing ethical concerns and intensified societal and environmental impacts. This position paper argues that irresponsible AI development is strongly driven by big tech's influence and involvement in the field. First, we examine the growing and disproportionate influence of big tech in AI research and argue that its drive for scaling and general-purpose systems is fundamentally at odds with the responsible, ethical, and sustainable development of AI. Second, we review key current environmental and societal negative impacts of AI and trace their connections to big tech's influence. Third, we discuss the underlying economic forces driving big tech's actions. Finally, as a call to action, we invite AI researchers to counter big tech's influence in irresponsible AI development through strategies that build on the responsibility of implicated actors and collective action.

A Comparative Study of Molecular Dynamics Approaches for Simulating Ionic Conductivity in Solid Lithium Electrolytes

Accurate prediction of ionic conductivity is critical for the design of high-performance solid-state electrolytes in next-generation batteries. We benchmark molecular dynamics (MD) approaches for computing ionic conductivity in 21 lithium solid electrolytes for which experimental ionic conductivity has been previously reported in the literature. In particular, we compare simulations driven by density functional theory (DFT) and by universal machine-learning interatomic potentials (uMLIPs), namely a MACE foundation model. We find comparable performance between DFT and MACE, despite MACE on one GPU more than 350 times faster than DFT on a 64-CPU node. The framework developed here is designed to enable systematic comparisons with additional uMLIPs and fine-tuned models in future work.

Large Scale Raman Spectrum Calculations in Defective 2D Materials using Deep Learning

We introduce a machine learning prediction workflow to study the impact of defects on the Raman response of 2D materials. By combining the use of machine-learned interatomic potentials, the Raman-active $Γ$-weighted density of states method and splitting configurations in independant patches, we are able to reach simulation sizes in the tens of thousands of atoms, with diagonalization now being the main bottleneck of the simulation. We apply the method to two systems, isotopic graphene and defective hexagonal boron nitride, and compare our predicted Raman response to experimental results, with good agreement. Our method opens up many possibilities for future studies of Raman response in solid-state physics.

The $SU(3)\supset SO(3)$ missing label problem and the analytical Bethe ansatz

The missing label for basis vectors of $SU(3)$ representations corresponding to the reduction $SU(3) \supset SO(3)$ can be provided by the eigenvalues of $SO(3)$ scalars in the enveloping algebra of $su(3)$. There are only two such independent elements of degree three and four. It is shown how the one of degree four can be diagonalized using the analytical Bethe ansatz.

Heun operator of Lie type and the modified algebraic Bethe ansatz

The generic Heun operator of Lie type is identified as a certain $BC$-Gaudin magnet Hamiltonian in a magnetic field. By using the modified algebraic Bethe ansatz introduced to diagonalize such Gaudin models, we obtain the spectrum of the generic Heun operator of Lie type in terms of the Bethe roots of inhomogeneous Bethe equations. We show also that these Bethe roots are intimately associated to the roots of polynomial solutions of the differential Heun equation. We illustrate the use of this approach in two contexts: the representation theory of $O(3)$ and the computation of the entanglement entropy for free Fermions on the Krawtchouk chain.

New realizations of algebras of the Askey-Wilson type in terms of Lie and quantum algebras

The Askey-Wilson algebra is realized in terms of the elements of the quantum algebras $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(2))$ or $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$. A new realization of the Racah algebra in terms of the Lie algebras $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ or $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ is given also. Details for different specializations are provided. The advantage of these new realizations is that one generator of the Askey-Wilson (or Racah) algebra becomes diagonal in the usual representation of the quantum algebras whereas the second one is tridiagonal. This allows to recover easily the recurrence relations of the associated orthogonal polynomials of the Askey scheme. These realizations involve rational functions of the Cartan generator of the quantum algebras, they are linear with respect to the other generators and depend on the Casimir element of the quantum algebras.
