Effective results on projective normality of the first and second secant varieties

In joint work with Lacini and Sheridan, we proved that the first and second secant varieties of a smooth projective complex variety embedded by the complete linear system of a sufficiently positive line bundle are projectively normal. The purpose of this paper is to establish effective results on how positive the embedding line bundle must be for this result to hold. We also provide effective conditions under which the defining ideal of the first secant variety is generated by cubics, and furthermore, generated by $3 \times 3$-minors of a matrix of linear forms. The latter result gives an effective version of a theorem of Agostini and the second author.

Hilbert polynomials of the first and second secant varieties

In this paper, we give a description of the cohomology groups of the symmetric powers of the tautological bundle associated with a sufficiently positive line bundle on the Hilbert scheme of 2 or 3 points on a smooth projective complex variety. The dimensions of these cohomology groups are expressed in terms of the Hilbert polynomials of the first and second secant varieties of the embedding given by the sufficiently positive line bundle. We also compute these Hilbert polynomials completely.

Singularities of the nested Hilbert scheme of points of length 3, 4

We show that the projection morphism $X^{[3,4]} \lra X^{[3]}$ is flat even if it has reducible fiber. After analyzing blow-up constructions related to $X^{[3,4]}$, we conclude that $X^{[3,4]}$ has canonical Gorenstein singularities. As a corollary, we specify the singularities of several nested Hilbert schemes.

Singularities and syzygies of secant varieties of smooth projective varieties

We study the higher secant varieties of a smooth projective variety embedded in projective space. We prove that when the variety is a surface and the embedding line bundle is sufficiently positive, these varieties are normal with Du Bois singularities and the syzygies of their defining ideals are linear to the expected order. We show that the cohomology of the structure sheaf of the surface completely determines whether the singularities of its secant varieties are Cohen--Macaulay or rational. We also prove analogous results when the dimension of the original variety is higher and the secant order is low, and by contrast we prove a result that strongly implies these statements do not generalize to higher dimensional varieties when the secant order is high. Finally, we deduce a complementary result characterizing the ideal of secant varieties of a surface in terms of the symbolic powers of the ideal of the surface itself, and we include a theorem concerning the weight one syzygies of an embedded surface -- analogous to the gonality conjecture for curves -- which we discovered as a natural application of our techniques.

Degree of the 3-secant variety

In this paper, we present a formula for the degree of the 3-secant variety of a nonsingular projective variety embedded by a 5-very ample line bundle. The formula is provided in terms of Segre classes of the tangent bundle of a given variety. We use the generalized version of double point formula to reduce the calculation into the case of the 2-secant variety. Due to the singularity of the 2-secant variety, we use secant bundle as a nonsingular birational model and compute multiplications of desired algebraic cycles.
