Non-normable spaces of analytic functions

For each value of $p$ such that $0<p<1$, we give a specific example of two functions in the Hardy space $H^p$ and in the Bergman space $A^p$ that do not satisfy the triangle inequality. For Hardy spaces, this provides a much simpler proof than the one due to Livingston that involves abstract functional analysis arguments and an approximation theorem. For Bergman spaces, we have not been able to locate any examples or proofs in the existing literature.

Korenblum's principle for Bergman spaces with radial weights

We show that the Korenblum maximum (domination) principle is valid for weighted Bergman spaces $A^p_w$ with arbitrary (non-negative and integrable) radial weights $w$ in the case $1\le p<\infty$. We also notice that in every weighted Bergman space the supremum of all radii for which the principle holds is strictly smaller than one. Under the mild additional assumption $\liminf_{r\to 0^+} w(r)>0$, we show that the principle fails whenever $0<p<1$.

Estimates for truncated area functionals on the Bloch space

Recently, Kayumov \cite{K} obtained a sharp estimate for the $n$-th truncated area functional for normalized functions in the Bloch space for $n\le 5$ and then, together with Wirths \cite{KW1}, extended the result for $n=6$. We prove that for the functions with non-negative Taylor coefficients, the same sharp estimate is valid for all $n$. For arbitrary functions, we obtain an estimate that is asymptotically of the same order but slightly larger (roughly by a factor of $4/e$). We also consider related weighted estimates for functionals involving the powers $n^t$, $t>0$, and show that the exponent $t=1$ represents the critical case for the expected sharp estimate.

Contractive inequalities for mixed norm spaces and the Beta function

For a wide range of pairs of mixed norm spaces such that one space is contained in another, we characterize all cases when contractive norm inequalities hold. In particular, this yields such results for many pairs of weighted Bergman spaces. Some inequalities of this type are motivated by their applications in Number Theory and in Mathematical Physics.

Invertible and isometric weighted composition operators

We consider abstract Banach spaces of analytic functions on general bounded domains that satisfy only a minimum number of axioms. We describe all invertible (equivalently, surjective) weighted composition operators acting on such spaces. For the spaces of analytic functions in the disk whose norm is given in terms of a natural seminorm (such as the typical spaces given in terms of derivatives), we describe all surjective weighted composition operators that are isometric. This generalizes a number of known results.

Co-isometric weighted composition operators on Hilbert spaces of analytic functions

We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a weighted composition operator to be co-isometric on a general weighted Hardy space of analytic functions in the unit disk whose reproducing kernel has the usual natural form. This turns out to be equivalent to the property of being unitary. The result reveals a dichotomy identifying a specific family of weighted Hardy spaces as the only ones that support non-trivial operators of this kind.

Weighted composition operators in functional Banach spaces: an axiomatic approach

We work with very general Banach spaces of analytic functions in the disk or other domains which satisfy a minimum number of natural axioms. Among the preliminary results, we discuss some implications of the basic axioms and identify all functional Banach spaces in which every bounded analytic function is a pointwise multiplier. Next, we characterize (in various ways) the weighted composition operators among the bounded operators on such spaces, thus generalizing some well-known results on multiplication or composition operators. We also characterize the invertible weighted composition operators on the disk and on general Banach spaces of analytic functions on bounded domains under different sets of axioms whose connections we discuss by providing appropriate examples. This generalizes and complements various recent results by Gunatillake, Bourdon, and Hyvärinen-Lindström-Nieminen-Saukko.

On univalent polynomials with critical points on the unit circle

Brannan showed that a normalized univalent polynomial of the form $P(z)=z+a_2 z^2+\ldots + a_{n-1}z^{n-1}+\frac{z^n}{n}$ is starlike if and only if $a_2=\ldots=a_{n-1}=0$. We give a new and simple proof of his result, showing further that it is also equivalent to the membership of $P$ in the Noshiro-Warschawski class of univalent functions whose derivative has positive real part in the disk. Both proofs are based on the Fejér lemma for trigonometric polynomials with positive real part.

A note on completeness of weighted normed spaces of analytic functions

Given a non-negative weight $v$, not necessarily bounded or strictly positive, defined on a domain $G$ in the complex plane, we consider the weighted space $H_v^\infty(G)$ of all holomorphic functions on $G$ such that the product $v|f|$ is bounded in $G$ and study the question of when is such a space complete under the canonical sup-seminorm. We obtain both some necessary and some sufficient conditions in terms of the weight $v$, exhibit several relevant examples, and characterize completeness in the case of spaces with radial weights on balanced domains.

On weighted compositions preserving the Carathéodory class

We characterize in various ways the weighted composition transformations which preserve the class ${\mathcal P}$ of normalized analytic functions in the disk with positive real part. We analyze the meaning of the criteria obtained for various special cases of symbols and identify the fixed points of such transformations.

Applications of Livingston-type inequalities to the generalized Zalcman functional

We obtain sharp estimates for a generalized Zalcman coefficient functional with a complex parameter for the Hurwitz class and the Noshiro-Warschawski class of univalent functions as well as for the closed convex hulls of the convex and starlike functions by using an inequality from [6]. In particular, we generalize an inequality proved by Ma for starlike functions and answer a question from his paper [16]. Finally, we prove an asymptotic version of the generalized Zalcman conjecture for univalent functions and discuss various related or equivalent statements which may shed further light on the problem.

The multiplicative Hilbert matrix

It is observed that the infinite matrix with entries $(\sqrt{mn}\log (mn))^{-1}$ for $m, n\ge 2$ appears as the matrix of the integral operator $\mathbf{H}f(s):=\int_{1/2}^{+\infty}f(w)(ζ(w+s)-1)dw$ with respect to the basis $(n^{-s})_{n\ge 2}$; here $ζ(s)$ is the Riemann zeta function and $H$ is defined on the Hilbert space ${\mathcal H}^2_0$ of Dirichlet series vanishing at $+\infty$ and with square-summable coefficients. This infinite matrix defines a multiplicative Hankel operator according to Helson's terminology or, alternatively, it can be viewed as a bona fide (small) Hankel operator on the infinite-dimensional torus ${\Bbb T}^{\infty}$. By analogy with the standard integral representation of the classical Hilbert matrix, this matrix is referred to as the multiplicative Hilbert matrix. It is shown that its norm equals $π$ and that it has a purely continuous spectrum which is the interval $[0,π]$; these results are in agreement with known facts about the classical Hilbert matrix. It is shown that the matrix $(m^{1/p} n^{(p-1)/p}\log (mn))^{-1}$ has norm $π/\sin(π/p)$ when acting on $\ell^p$ for $1<p<\infty$. However, the multiplicative Hilbert matrix fails to define a bounded operator on ${\mathcal H}^p_0$ for $p\neq 2$, where ${\mathcal H}^p_0$ are $H^p$ spaces of Dirichlet series. It remains an interesting problem to decide whether the analytic symbol $\sum_{n\ge 2} (\log n)^{-1} n^{-s-1/2}$ of the multiplicative Hilbert matrix arises as the Riesz projection of a bounded function on the infinite-dimensional torus ${\Bbb T}^\infty$.

The Krzyż conjecture revisited

The Krzyż conjecture concerns the largest values of the Taylor coefficients of a non-vanishing analytic function bounded by one in modulus in the unit disk. It has been open since 1968 even though information on the structure of extremal functions is available. The purpose of this paper is to collect various conditions that the coefficients of an extremal function (and various other quantities associated with it) should satisfy if the conjecture is true and to show that each one of these properties is equivalent to the conjecture itself. This may provide several possible starting points for future attempts at solving the problem.

On the generalized Zalcman functional for some classes of univalent functions

We prove three sharp estimates for the generalized Zalcman coefficient functional: one for the Hurwitz class, another for the Noshiro-Warschawski class, and yet another for the functions in the closed convex hull of convex univalent functions. In each case the extremal functions are identified. We also observe that an asymptotic version of the Zalcman conjecture is true.

Holomorphic self-maps of the disk intertwining two linear fractional maps

We characterize (in almost all cases) the holomorphic self-maps of the unit disk that intertwine two given linear fractional self-maps of the disk. The proofs are based on iteration and a careful analysis of the Denjoy-Wolff points. In particular, we characterize the maps that commute with a given linear fractional map (in the cases that are not already known) and, as an application, determine all "roots" of such maps in the sense of iteration (if any). This yields as a byproduct a short proof of a recent theorem on the embedding of a linear fractional transformation into a semigroup of holomorphic self-maps of the disk.

On Blaschke products with derivatives in Bergman spaces with normal weights

We generalize a well-known sufficient condition for interpolating sequences for the Hilbert Bergman spaces to other Bergman spaces with normal weights (as defined by Shields and Williams) and obtain new results regarding the membership of the derivative of a Blashke product or a general inner function in such spaces. We also apply duality techniques to obtain further results of this type and obtain new results about interpolating Blaschke products.
