Entanglement replication via quantum repeated interactions

We study entanglement creation between two independent XX chains, which are repeatedly coupled locally to spin-1/2 Bell pairs. We show analytically that in the steady state the entanglement of the Bell pairs is perfectly transferred to the chains, generating large-scale interchain pair correlations. However, before the steady state is reached, within a growing causal region around the interacting locus the chains are found in a current driven nonquilibrium steady state (NESS). In the NESS, the chains cross entanglement decays exponentially with respect to the distance to the boundary sites with a typical length scale which is inversely proportional to the driving current.

Decoherence of Bell states by local interactions with a suddenly quenched spin environment

We study the dynamics of disentanglement of two qubits initially prepared in a Bell state and coupled at different sites to an Ising transverse field spin chain (ITF) playing the role of a dynamic spin environment. The initial state of the whole system is prepared into a tensor product state $ρ_{Bell}\otimes ρ_{chain}$ where the state of the chain is taken to be given by the ground state $|G(λ_i)\rangle$ of the ITF Hamiltonian $H_E(λ_i)$ with an initial field $λ_i$. At time $t=0^+$, the strength of the transverse field is suddenly quenched to a new value $λ_f$ and the whole system (chain $+$ qubits) undergoes a unitary dynamics generated by the total Hamiltonian $H_{Tot}=H_E(λ_f) + H_I$ where $H_I$ describes a local interaction between the qubits and the spin chain. The resulting dynamics leads to a disentanglement of the qubits, which is described through the Wooter's Concurrence, due to there interaction with the non-equilibrium environment. The concurrence is related to the Loschmidt echo which in turn is expressed in terms of the time-dependent covariance matrix associated to the ITF. This permits a precise numerical and analytical analysis of the disentanglement dynamics of the qubits as a function of their distance, bath properties and quench amplitude. In particular we emphasize the special role played by a critical initial environment.

Quantum quench from a thermal tensor state: boundary effects and generalized Gibbs ensemble

We consider a quantum quench in a non-interacting fermionic one-dimensional field-theory. The system of size $L$ is initially prepared into two halves $\mathcal{L}$ ($[-L/2,0]$) and $\mathcal{R}$ ($[0,L/2]$), each of them thermalized at two different temperatures, ${T_{L}}$ and ${T_{R}}$ respectively. At a given time the two halves are joined together by a local coupling and the whole system is left to evolve unitarily. For an infinitely extended system ($L\rightarrow \infty$), we show that the time evolution of the particle and energy densities is well described via a hydrodynamic approach which allows us to evaluate the correspondent stationary currents. We show, in such a case, that the two-point correlation functions are deduced, at large times, from a simple non-equilibrium steady state. Otherwise, whenever the boundary conditions are retained (in a properly defined thermodynamic limit), any current is suppressed at large times, and the stationary state is described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble, which is diagonal and depends only on the post-quench mode occupation.

Hydrodynamic description of Hard-core Bosons on a Galileo ramp

We study the quantum evolution of a cloud of hard-core bosons loaded on a one-dimensional optical lattice after its sudden release from a harmonic trap. Just after the trap has been removed, a linear ramp potential is applied, mimicking the so called Galileo ramp experiment. The non-equilibrium expansion of the bosonic cloud is elucidated through a hydrodynamical description which is compared to the exact numerical evolution obtained by exact diagonalization on finite lattice sizes. The system is found to exhibit a rich behavior showing in particular Bloch oscillations of a self-trapped condensate and an ejected particle density leading to two diverging entangled condensates. Depending on the initial density of the gas different regimes of Josephson-like oscillations are observed. At low densities, the trapped part of the cloud is in a superfluid phase that oscillates in time as a whole. At higher densities, the trapped condensate is in a mixed superfluid-Mott phase that show a breathing regime for steep enough potential ramps.

Entangling many-body bound states with propagative modes in Bose-Hubbard systems

The quantum evolution of a cloud of bosons initially localized on part of a one dimensional optical lattice and suddenly subjected to a linear ramp is studied, realizing a quantum analog of the "Galileo ramp" experiment. The main remarkable effects of this realistic setup are revealed using analytical and numerical methods. Only part of the particles are ejected for a high enough ramp, while the others remain self-trapped. Then, the trapped density profile displays rich dynamics with Josephson-like oscillations around a plateau. This setup, by coupling bound states to propagative modes, creates two diverging condensates for which the entanglement is computed and related to the equilibrium one. Further, we address the role of integrability on the entanglement and on the damping and thermalization of simple observables.

Critical quench dynamics in confined systems

We analyze the coherent quantum evolution of a many-particle system after slowly sweeping a power-law confining potential. The amplitude of the confining potential is varied in time along a power-law ramp such that the many-particle system finally reaches or crosses a critical point. Under this protocol we derive general scaling laws for the density of excitations created during the non-adiabatic sweep of the confining potential. It is found that the mean excitation density follows an algebraic law as a function of the sweeping rate with an exponent that depends on the space-time properties of the potential. We confirm our scaling laws by first order adiabatic calculation and exact results on the Ising quantum chain with a varying transverse field.

Gradient critical phenomena in the Ising quantum chain: surface behaviour

We consider the influence of a power-law deviation from the critical coupling such that the system is critical at its surface. We develop a scaling theory showing that such a perturbation introduces a new length scale which governs the scaling behaviour of the density profiles as well as the finite-size behaviour of the surface properties. Exact results are obtained for the Ising quantum chain when the perturbation varies linearly whereas the quadratic perturbation is mainly studied numerically. The scaling theory is well confirmed in both cases.

Quantum Non-Equilibrium Steady States Induced by Repeated Interactions

We study the steady state of a finite XX chain coupled at its boundaries to quantum reservoirs made of free spins that interact one after the other with the chain. The two-point correlations are calculated exactly and it is shown that the steady state is completely characterized by the magnetization profile and the associated current. Except at the boundary sites, the magnetization is given by the average of the reservoirs' magnetizations. The steady state current, proportional to the difference in the reservoirs' magnetizations, shows a non-monotonous behavior with respect to the system-reservoir coupling strength, with an optimal current state for a finite value of the coupling. Moreover, we show that the steady state can be described by a generalized Gibbs state.

Out-of-equilibrium bosons on a one-dimensional optical random lattice

We study the transport properties of a one-dimensional hard-core boson lattice gas coupled to two particle reservoirs at different chemical potentials generating a current flow through the system. In particular, the influence of random fluctuations of the underlying lattice on the stationary state properties is investigated. We show analytically that the steady-state density presents a linear profile. The local steady-state current obeys the Fourier law $j=-κ(τ)\nabla ρ$ where $τ$ is a typical timescale of the lattice fluctuations and $\nabla ρ$ the density gradient imposed %on the system by the reservoirs.

Work fluctuations in quantum spin chains

We study the work fluctuations of two types of finite quantum spin chains under the application of a time-dependent magnetic field in the context of the fluctuation relation and Jarzynski equality. The two types of quantum chains correspond to the integrable Ising quantum chain and the nonintegrable XX quantum chain in a longitudinal magnetic field. For several magnetic field protocols, the quantum Crooks and Jarzynski relations are numerically tested and fulfilled. As a more interesting situation, we consider the forcing regime where a periodic magnetic field is applied. In the Ising case we give an exact solution in terms of double-confluent Heun functions. We show that the fluctuations of the work performed by the external periodic drift are maximum at a frequency proportional to the amplitude of the field. In the nonintegrable case, we show that depending on the field frequency a sharp transition is observed between a Poisson-limit work distribution at high frequencies toward a normal work distribution at low frequencies.

Relaxation in the XX quantum chain

We present the results obtained on the magnetisation relaxation properties of an XX quantum chain in a transverse magnetic field. We first consider an initial thermal kink-like state where half of the chain is initially thermalized at a very high temperature $T_b$ while the remaining half, called the system, is put at a lower temperature $T_s$. From this initial state, we derive analytically the Green function associated to the dynamical behaviour of the transverse magnetisation. Depending on the strength of the magnetic field and on the temperature of the system, different regimes are obtained for the magnetic relaxation. In particular, with an initial droplet-like state, that is a cold subsystem of finite size in contact at both ends with an infinite temperature environnement, we derive analytically the behaviour of the time-dependent system magnetisation.

Ising Quantum Chains

The aim of this article is to give a pedagogical introduction to the exact equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of free fermionic quantum spin chains. In a first part we present in full details the canonical diagonalisation procedure and review quickly the equilibrium dynamical properties. The phase diagram is analysed and possible phase transitions are discussed. The two next chapters are concerned with the effect of aperiodicity and quenched disorder on the critical properties of the quantum chain. The remaining part is devoted to the nonequilibrium dynamical behaviour of such quantum chains relaxing from a nonequilibrium pure initial state. In particular, a special attention is made on the relaxation of transverse magnetization. Two-time linear response functions and correlation functions are also considered, giving insights on the nature of the final nonequilibrium stationnary state. The possibility of aging is also discussed.

Gradient critical phenomena in the Ising quantum chain

We consider the behaviour of a critical system in the presence of a gradient perturbation of the couplings. In the direction of the gradient an interface region separates the ordered phase from the disordered one. We develop a scaling theory for the density profiles induced by the gradient perturbation which involves a characteristic length given by the width of the interface region. The scaling predictions are tested in the framework of the mean-field Ginzburg-Landau theory. Then we consider the Ising quantum chain in a linearly varying transverse field which corresponds to the extreme anisotropic limit of a classical two-dimensional Ising model. The quantum Hamiltonian can be diagonalized exactly in the scaling limit where the eigenvalue problem is the same as for the quantum harmonic oscillator. The energy density, the magnetization profile and the two-point correlation function are studied either analytically or by exact numerical calculations. Their scaling behaviour are in agreement with the predictions of the scaling theory.

Probability distributions of the work in the 2D-Ising model

Probability distributions of the magnetic work are computed for the 2D Ising model by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The system is first prepared at equilibrium for three temperatures below, at and above the critical point. A magnetic field is then applied and grown linearly at different rates. Probability distributions of the work are stored and free energy differences computed using the Jarzynski equality. Consistency is checked and the dynamics of the system is analyzed. Free energies and dissipated works are reproduced with simple models. The critical exponent $δ$ is estimated in an usual manner.

Foundations of Statistical Mechanics: in and out of Equilibrium

The first part of the paper is devoted to the foundations, that is the mathematical and physical justification, of equilibrium statistical mechanics. It is a pedagogical attempt, mostly based on Khinchin's presentation, which purpose is to clarify some aspects of the development of statistical mechanics. In the second part, we discuss some recent developments that appeared out of equilibrium, such as fluctuation theorem and Jarzynski equality.

Scaling and front dynamics in Ising quantum chains

We study the relaxation dynamics of a quantum Ising chain initially prepared in a product of canonical states corresponding each to an equilibrium state of part of the chain at a given temperature. We focus our attention on the transverse magnetization for which a general expression is given. Explicite results are given for the completely factorized initial state, corresponding to a situation where all the spins are thermalized independently, and for the two-temperatures initial state, where part of the chain called the system is thermalized at a temperature $T_s$ and the remaining part is at a temperature $T_b$.

Off equilibrium dynamics in 2d-XY system

We study the non-equilibrium time evolution of the classical XY spin model in two dimensions. The two-time autocorrelation and linear response functions are considered for systems initially prepared in a high temperature state and in a completely ordered state. After a quench into the critical phase, we determine, via Monte Carlo simulations, the time-evolution of these quantities and extract the temperature dependence of the slope of the parametric plot susceptibility/correlation in the asymptotic regime. This slope is usually identified with the infinite fluctuation-dissipation ratio which measures the violation to the equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation theorem. However, a direct measure of this ratio leads to a vanishing value.

Off equilibrium dynamics in disordered quantum spin chain

We study the non-equilibrium time evolution of the average transverse magnetisation and end-to-end correlation functions of the random Ising quantum chain. Starting with fully magnetised states, either in the $x$ or $z$ direction, we compute numerically the average quantities. They show similar behaviour to the homogeneous chain, that is an algebraic decay in time toward a stationary state. During the time evolution, the spatial correlations, measured from one end to the other of the chain, are building up and finally at long time they reach a size-dependent constant depending on the distance from criticality. Analytical arguments are given which support the numerical results.
