Torelli loci, product cycles, and the homomorphism conjecture for $\mathcal{A}_g$

The tautological $\mathbb{Q}$-subalgebra $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{A}_g) \subset \mathsf{CH}^*(\mathcal{A}_g)$ of the Chow ring of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties is generated by the Chern classes of the Hodge bundle. There is a canonical $\mathbb{Q}$-linear projection operator $\mathsf{taut}: \mathsf{CH}^*(\mathcal{A}_g) \rightarrow \mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{A}_g).$ We present here new calculations of intersection products of the Torelli locus in $\mathcal{A}_g$ with the product loci $\mathcal{A}_{r}\times \mathcal{A}_{g-r} \rightarrow \mathcal{A}_g$ for $r\leq 3$. The results suggest that $\mathsf{taut}$ is a $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra homomorphism, at least for special cycles. We discuss a conjectural framework for this homomorphism property. Our calculations follow two independent approaches. The first is a direct study of the excess intersection geometry of the fiber product of the Torelli and product morphisms. The second recasts the geometry in terms of families Gromov-Witten classes, which are computed by a wall-crossing formula related to unramified maps. We define tautological projections of cycles on the fiber products $\mathcal X_g^s \to \mathcal A_g$ of the universal family. We compute these projections for a class of product cycles on $\mathcal X_g^s$ in terms of a determinant involving the universal theta divisors and Poincar\'e classes. Using Abel-Jacobi pullbacks of product cycles on $\mathcal X_g^s$ and their projections, we construct a new family of classes which we conjecture to lie in the Gorenstein kernels of the tautological rings $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal M^{\mathrm{ct}}_{g,n})$. In particular, we construct nontrivial elements of the Gorenstein kernels of $\mathsf{R}^5(\mathcal{M}_{5,2}^{\mathrm{ct}})$ and $\mathsf{R}^5(\mathcal{M}_{4,4}^{\mathrm{ct}})$.

Tautological and non-tautological cycles on the moduli space of abelian varieties

The tautological Chow ring of the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ was defined and calculated by van der Geer in 1999. By studying the Torelli pullback of algebraic cycles classes from $\mathcal{A}_g$ to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{ct}}$ of genus $g$ of curves of compact type, we prove that the product class $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_5]\in \mathsf{CH}^{5}(\mathcal{A}_6)$ is non-tautological, the first construction of an interesting non-tautological algebraic class on the moduli spaces of abelian varieties. For our proof, we use the complete description of the the tautological ring $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_6^{\mathrm{ct}})$ in genus 6 conjectured by Pixton and recently proven by Canning-Larson-Schmitt. The tautological ring $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_6^{\mathrm{ct}})$ has a 1-dimensional Gorenstein kernel, which is geometrically explained by the Torelli pullback of $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_5]$. More generally, the Torelli pullback of the difference between $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_{g-1}]$ and its tautological projection always lies in the Gorenstein kernel of $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{ct}})$. The product map $\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_{g-1}\rightarrow \mathcal{A}_g$ is a Noether-Lefschetz locus with general Neron-Severi rank 2. A natural extension of van der Geer's tautological ring is obtained by including more general Noether-Lefschetz loci. Results and conjectures related to cycle classes of Noether-Lefschetz loci for all $g$ are presented.

Tautological projection for cycles on the moduli space of abelian varieties

We define a tautological projection operator for algebraic cycle classes on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties $\mathcal{A}_g$: every cycle class decomposes canonically as a sum of a tautological and a non-tautological part. The main new result required for the definition of the projection operator is the vanishing of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle over the boundary $\bar{\mathcal{A}}_g\smallsetminus \mathcal{A}_g$ of any toroidal compactification $\bar{\mathcal{A}}_g$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$. We prove the vanishing by a careful study of residues in the boundary geometry. The existence of the projection operator raises many natural questions about cycles on $\mathcal{A}_g$. We calculate the projections of all product cycles $\mathcal{A}_{g_1}\times \ldots \times \mathcal{A}_{g_\ell}$ in terms of Schur determinants, discuss Faber's earlier calculations related to the Torelli locus, and state several open questions. The Appendix contains a conjecture about the projection of the locus of abelian varieties with real multiplication.

The Chow ring of the moduli space of degree $2$ quasi-polarized K3 surfaces

We study the Chow ring with rational coefficients of the moduli space $\mathcal F_{2}$ of quasi-polarized $K3$ surfaces of degree $2$. We find generators, relations, and calculate the Chow Betti numbers. The highest nonvanishing Chow group is $\mathsf A^{17}(\mathcal F_2)\cong {\mathbb{Q}}$. We prove that the Chow ring consists of tautological classes and is isomorphic to the even cohomology. The Chow ring is not generated by divisors and does not satisfy duality with respect to the pairing into $\mathsf A^{17}(\mathcal F_2)$. The kernel of the pairing is a 1-dimensional subspace of $\mathsf{A}^{9}(\mathcal F_2)$ which we calculate explicitly. In the appendix, we revisit Kirwan-Lee's calculation of the Poincar\'e polynomial of $\mathcal{F}_2$.

On the cohomology of tautological bundles over Quot schemes of curves

We consider tautological bundles and their exterior and symmetric powers on the Quot scheme over the projective line. We prove and conjecture several statements regarding the vanishing of their higher cohomology, and we describe their spaces of global sections via tautological constructions. To this end, we make use of the embedding of the Quot scheme as an explicit local complete intersection in the product of two Grassmannians, studied by Str{\o}mme. This allows us to construct resolutions with vanishing cohomology for the tautological bundles and their exterior and symmetric powers. We further illustrate our approach with a few additional cohomological calculations.

Big and Nef Tautological Vector Bundles over the Hilbert Scheme of Points

We study tautological vector bundles over the Hilbert scheme of points on surfaces. For each K-trivial surface, we write down a simple criterion ensuring that the tautological bundles are big and nef, and illustrate it by examples. In the K3 case, we extend recent constructions and results of Bini, Boissi\`ere and Flamini from the Hilbert scheme of 2 and 3 points to an arbitrary number of points. Among the K-trivial surfaces, the case of Enriques surfaces is the most involved. Our techniques apply to other smooth projective surfaces, including blowups of K3s and minimal surfaces of general type, as well as to the punctual Quot schemes of curves.

Euler characteristics of tautological bundles over Quot schemes of curves

We compute the Euler characteristics of tautological vector bundles and their exterior powers over the Quot schemes of curves. We give closed-form expressions over punctual Quot schemes in all genera. For higher rank quotients of a trivial vector bundle, we obtain answers in genus zero. We also study the Euler characteristics of the symmetric powers of the tautological bundles, for rank zero quotients.

Higher rank Segre integrals over the Hilbert scheme of points

Let S be a nonsingular projective surface. Each vector bundle V on S of rank s induces a tautological vector bundle over the Hilbert scheme of n points of S. When s=1, the top Segre classes of the tautological bundles are given by a recently proven formula conjectured in 1999 by M. Lehn. We calculate here the Segre classes of tautological bundles for all ranks s over all K-trivial surfaces. Furthermore, in rank s=2, the Segre integrals are determined for all surfaces, thus establishing a full analogue of Lehn's formula. We also give conjectural formulas for certain series of Verlinde Euler characteristics over the Hilbert schemes of points.

Quot schemes of curves and surfaces: virtual classes, integrals, Euler characteristics

We compute tautological integrals over Quot schemes on curves and surfaces. After obtaining several explicit formulas over Quot schemes of dimension 0 quotients on curves (and finding a new symmetry), we apply the results to tautological integrals against the virtual fundamental classes of Quot schemes of dimension 0 and 1 quotients on surfaces (using also universality, torus localization, and cosection localization). The virtual Euler characteristics of Quot schemes of surfaces, a new theory parallel to the Vafa-Witten Euler characteristics of the moduli of bundles, is defined and studied. Complete formulas for the virtual Euler characteristics are found in the case of dimension 0 quotients on surfaces. Dimension 1 quotients are studied on K3 surfaces and surfaces of general type with connections to the Kawai-Yoshioka formula and the Seiberg-Witten invariants respectively. The dimension 1 theory is completely solved for minimal surfaces of general type admitting a nonsingular canonical curve. Along the way, we find a new connection between weighted tree counting and multivariate Fuss-Catalan numbers which is of independent interest.

Rationality of descendent series for Hilbert and Quot schemes of surfaces

Quot schemes of quotients of a trivial bundle of arbitrary rank on a nonsingular projective surface X carry perfect obstruction theories and virtual fundamental classes whenever the quotient sheaf has at most 1-dimensional support. The associated generating series of virtual Euler characteristics was conjectured to be a rational function when X is simply connected. We conjecture here the rationality of more general descendent series with insertions obtained from the Chern characters of the tautological sheaf. We prove the rationality of descendent series in Hilbert scheme cases for all curve classes and in Quot scheme cases when the curve class is 0.

The virtual K-theory of Quot schemes of surfaces

We study virtual invariants of Quot schemes parametrizing quotients of dimension at most 1 of the trivial sheaf of rank N on nonsingular projective surfaces. We conjecture that the generating series of virtual K-theoretic invariants are given by rational functions. We prove rationality for several geometries including punctual quotients for all smooth projective surfaces and dimension 1 quotients for surfaces X with p_g>0. We also show that the generating series of virtual cobordism classes can be irrational. Given a K-theory class on X of rank r, we associate natural series of virtual Segre and Verlinde numbers. We show that the Segre and Verlinde series match in the following three cases: Quot schemes of dimension 0 quotients, Hilbert schemes of points and curves over surfaces with p_g>0, Quot schemes of minimal elliptic surfaces for quotients supported on fiber classes. Moreover, for punctual quotients of the trivial sheaf of rank N, we prove a new symmetry of the Segre/Verlinde series exchanging r and N. The Segre/Verlinde statements have analogues for punctual Quot schemes over curves.

The combinatorics of Lehn's conjecture

Let S be a smooth projective surface equipped with a line bundle H. Lehn's conjecture is a formula for the top Segre class of the tautological bundle associated to H on the Hilbert scheme of points of S. Voisin has recently reduced Lehn's conjecture to the vanishing of certain coefficients of special power series. The first result of this short note is a proof of the vanishings required by Voisin by residue calculations (A. Szenes and M. Vergne have independently found the same proof). Our second result is an elementary solution of the parallel question for the top Segre class on the symmetric power of a smooth projective curve C associated to a higher rank vector bundle V on C. Finally, we propose a complete conjecture for the top Segre class on the Hilbert scheme of points of S associated to a higher rank vector bundle on S in the K-trivial case.

Bundles of generalized theta functions over abelian surfaces

We study the bundles of generalized theta functions constructed from moduli spaces of sheaves over abelian surfaces. In degree 0, the splitting type of these bundles is expressed in terms of indecomposable semihomogeneous factors. Furthermore, Fourier-Mukai symmetries of the Verlinde bundles are found, consistently with strange duality. Along the way, a transformation formula for the theta bundles is derived, extending a theorem of Drezet-Narasimhan from curves to abelian surfaces.

The Chern classes of the Verlinde bundles

A formula for the first Chern class of the Verlinde bundle over the moduli space of smooth genus g curves is given. A finite-dimensional argument is presented in rank 2 using geometric symmetries obtained from strange duality, relative Serre duality, and Wirtinger duality together with the projective flatness of the Hitchin connection. A derivation using conformal-block methods is presented in higher rank. An expression for the first Chern class over the compact moduli space of curves is obtained.

Segre classes and Hilbert schemes of points

We prove a closed formula for the integrals of the top Segre classes of tautological bundles over the Hilbert schemes of points of a K3 surface X. We derive relations among the Segre classes via equivariant localization of the virtual fundamental classes of Quot schemes on X. The resulting recursions are then solved explicitly. The formula proves the K-trivial case of a conjecture of M. Lehn from 1999. The relations determining the Segre classes fit into a much wider theory. By localizing the virtual classes of certain relative Quot schemes on surfaces, we obtain new systems of relations among tautological classes on moduli spaces of surfaces and their relative Hilbert schemes of points. For the moduli of K3 sufaces, we produce relations intertwining the kappa classes and the Noether-Lefschetz loci. Conjectures are proposed.

On the strange duality conjecture for abelian surfaces II

In the prequel to this paper, two versions of Le Potier's strange duality conjecture for sheaves over abelian surfaces were studied. A third version is considered here. In the current setup, the isomorphism involves moduli spaces of sheaves with fixed determinant and fixed determinant of the Fourier-Mukai transform on one side, and moduli spaces where both determinants vary, on the other side. We first establish the isomorphism in rank one using the representation theory of Heisenberg groups. For product abelian surfaces, the isomorphism is then shown to hold for sheaves with fiber degree 1 via Fourier-Mukai techniques. By degeneration to product geometries, the duality is obtained generically for a large number of numerical types. Finally, it is shown in great generality that the Verlinde sheaves encoding the variation of the spaces of theta functions are locally free over moduli.

On Verlinde sheaves and strange duality over elliptic Noether-Lefschetz divisors

We extend results on generic strange duality for K3 surfaces by showing that the proposed isomorphism holds over an entire Noether-Lefschetz divisor in the moduli space of quasipolarized K3s. We interpret the statement globally as an isomorphism of sheaves over this divisor, and also describe the global construction over the space of polarized K3s.
