Under-Canopy Terrain Reconstruction in Dense Forests Using RGB Imaging and Neural 3D Reconstruction

Mapping the terrain and understory hidden beneath dense forest canopies is of great interest for numerous applications such as search and rescue, trail mapping, forest inventory tasks, and more. Existing solutions rely on specialized sensors: either heavy, costly airborne LiDAR, or Airborne Optical Sectioning (AOS), which uses thermal synthetic aperture photography and is tailored for person detection. We introduce a novel approach for the reconstruction of canopy-free, photorealistic ground views using only conventional RGB images. Our solution is based on the celebrated Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF), a recent 3D reconstruction method. Additionally, we include specific image capture considerations, which dictate the needed illumination to successfully expose the scene beneath the canopy. To better cope with the poorly lit understory, we employ a low light loss. Finally, we propose two complementary approaches to remove occluding canopy elements by controlling per-ray integration procedure. To validate the value of our approach, we present two possible downstream tasks. For the task of search and rescue (SAR), we demonstrate that our method enables person detection which achieves promising results compared to thermal AOS (using only RGB images). Additionally, we show the potential of our approach for forest inventory tasks like tree counting. These results position our approach as a cost-effective, high-resolution alternative to specialized sensors for SAR, trail mapping, and forest-inventory tasks.

Riemannian Geometry Approach for Minimizing Distortion and its Applications

Given an affine transformation $T$, we define its Fisher distortion $Dist_F(T)$. We show that the Fisher distortion has Riemannian metric structure and provide an algorithm for finding mean distorting transformation -- namely -- for a given set $\{T_{i}\}_{i=1}^N$ of affine transformations, find an affine transformation $T$ that minimize the overall distortion $\sum_{i=1}^NDist_F^{2}(T^{-1}T_{i}).$ The mean distorting transformation can be useful in some fields -- in particular, we apply it for rendering affine panoramas.

Photonic transport control by spin-optical disordered metasurface

Photonic metasurfaces are ultrathin electromagnetic wave-molding metamaterials providing the missing link for the integration of nanophotonic chips with nanoelectronic circuits. An extra twist in this field originates from spin-optical metasurfaces providing the photon spin (polarization helicity) as an additional degree of freedom in light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. Here we report on a generic concept to control the photonic transport by disordered (random) metasurfaces with a custom-tailored geometric phase. This approach combines the peculiarity of random patterns to support extraordinary information capacity within the intrinsic limit of speckle noise, and the optical spin control in the geometric phase mechanism, simply implemented in two-dimensional structured matter. By manipulating the local orientations of anisotropic optical nanoantennas, we observe spin-dependent near-field and free-space open channels, generating state-of-the-art multiplexing and interconnects. Spin-optical disordered metasurfaces provide a route for multitask wavefront shaping via a single ultrathin nanoscale photonic device.

Spherical Functions on 2-adic Ramified Hermetian Spaces

Y. Hironaka introduced the spherical functions on the p-adic space of Hermitian matrices. For the space of 2\times2 Hermitian matrices, we complete Hironaka's work by also considering the case of a wildly ramified quadratic extension. We compute the spherical functions explicitly and obtain the functional equations.
