Generalized Global Symmetries of $T[M]$ Theories: Part II

We continue the investigation of symmetries and anomalies of $T[M]$ theories obtained by compactifying 6d SCFTs on an internal manifold $M$. We extend the notion of "polarizations on a manifold $M$" to cases where $M$ may have boundaries or defects. Through examples with $M$ of dimension two, three, and four, we illustrate recurring themes in compactifications -- for instance, the important roles played by Kaluza-Klein modes, and how the generalized symmetries (including higher-group and non-invertible ones) of $T[M]$, together with their anomalies, arise from non-trivial combinations of the parent 6d symmetries and the geometric structures of the internal manifold. For each dimension, we also focus on several topics that are especially interesting in that setting. These include: for 2-manifolds, the geometry of the "full moduli space" of $T[M_2]$ and its interaction with polarizations and symmetries; for 3-manifolds, the effect of torsion in homology on the spectrum of line operators in $T[M_3]$, together with applications to the study of quantum invariants such as $\hat Z_a(M_3, q)$; and for 4-manifolds, predictions for VOA$[M_4]$ following from symmetries of $T[M_4]$, as well as the construction of a new invariant of 4-manifolds that depends on two "$q$-parameters." Along the way, we discuss a range of topics that are of independent interest, such as how non-invertible symmetries in higher dimensions can become invertible under compactification, how to classify defects in quantum field theory via their response to a change of framing, and the interplay between $\hat Z_a$ and volume conjectures.

Gauge Theory and Skein Modules

We study skein modules of 3-manifolds by embedding them into the Hilbert spaces of 4d ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theories. When the 3-manifold has reduced holonomy, we present an algorithm to determine the dimension and the list of generators of the skein module with a general gauge group. The analysis uses a deformation preserving ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry to express the dimension as a sum over nilpotent orbits in its Lie algebra. We find that the dimensions often differ between Langlands-dual pairs beyond the A-series, for which we provide a physical explanation involving chiral symmetry breaking and 't Hooft operators. We also relate our results to the structure of $\mathbb{C}^*$-fixed loci in the moduli space of Higgs bundles. This approach helps to clarify the relation between the gauge-theoretic framework of Kapustin and Witten with other versions of the geometric Langlands program, explains why the dimensions of skein modules do not exhibit a TQFT-like behavior, and provides a physical interpretation of the skein-valued curve counting of Ekholm and Shende.

E-Strings and Four-Manifolds

We investigate the physics of the E-string theory and its compactifications as well as their applications to four-dimensional topology. In particular, we compute the partition function of the topologically twisted theory on $M_4\times T^2$, where $M_4$ is a four-manifold. In a range of examples, we verify that this partition function, as a $q$-series, 1) has integral coefficients, 2) is modular, and 3) can be lifted to a topological modular form. Remarkably, the E-string theory "knows" about various subtle aspects of the world of smooth 4-manifolds, as the (topological) modularity of the partition function is contingent on a collection of properties of 4-manifolds and their Seiberg-Witten invariants, including, notably, the simple-type conjecture. Furthermore, both theoretical and empirical evidences indicate that this partition function defines a genuine smooth invariant, even when $b_2^+\le 1$. Therefore, the E-string theory may offer powerful new tools for exploring regions in the geography of 4-manifolds that have been inaccessible to existing invariants obtained from gauge theory and quantum field theory.

A new approach to (3+1)-dimensional TQFTs via topological modular forms

In this paper, we present a construction toward a new type of TQFTs at the crossroads of low-dimensional topology, algebraic geometry, physics, and homotopy theory. It assigns TMF-modules to closed 3-manifolds and maps of TMF-modules to 4-dimensional cobordisms. This is a mathematical proposal for one of the simplest examples in a family of $π_*({\rm TMF})$-valued invariants of 4-manifolds which are expected to arise from 6-dimensional superconformal field theories. As part of the construction, we define TMF-modules associated with symmetric bilinear forms, using (spectral) derived algebraic geometry. The invariant of unimodular bilinear forms takes values in $π_*({\rm TMF})$, conjecturally generalizing the theta function of a lattice. We discuss gluing properties of the invariants. We also demonstrate some interesting physics applications of the TMF-modules such as distinguishing phases of quantum field theories in various dimensions.

On mixed 't Hooft anomalies of emergent symmetries

In this paper, we investigate the dynamical constraints imposed on the UV theory when it develops an emergent symmetry in the infrared with mixed 't Hooft anomalies. We demonstrate that, under certain conditions, the UV theory must contain non-genuine operators. Our primary examples illustrating this phenomenon are 2D gauged linear sigma models and 3D Chern-Simons-matter theories. Through this analysis, we establish connections between different classes of topological quantum field theories and propose a correspondence between quantum cohomologies of distinct target spaces.

Branes and DAHA Representations

Using brane quantization, we study the representation theory of the spherical double affine Hecke algebra of type $A_1$ in terms of the topological A-model on the moduli space of flat SL(2,C)-connections on a once-punctured torus. In particular, we provide an explicit match between finite-dimensional representations and A-branes with compact support; one consequence is the discovery of new finite-dimensional indecomposable representations. We proceed to embed the A-model story in an M-theory brane construction, closely related to the one used in the 3d/3d correspondence; as a result, we identify modular tensor categories behind particular finite-dimensional representations with PSL(2,Z) action. Using a further connection to the fivebrane system for the class S construction, we go on to study the relationship of Coulomb branch geometry and algebras of line operators in 4d N=2* theories to the double affine Hecke algebra.

Holomorphic CFTs and topological modular forms

We use the theory of topological modular forms to constrain bosonic holomorphic CFTs, which can be viewed as $(0,1)$ SCFTs with trivial right-moving supersymmetric sector. A conjecture by Segal, Stolz and Teichner requires the constant term of the partition function to be divisible by specific integers determined by the central charge. We verify this constraint in large classes of physical examples, and rule out the existence of an infinite set of extremal CFTs, including those with central charges $c=48, 72, 96$ and $120$.

Symmetries of 2d TQFTs and Equivariant Verlinde Formulae for General Groups

We study (generalized) discrete symmetries of 2d semisimple TQFTs. These are 2d TQFTs whose fusion rules can be diagonalized. We show that, in this special basis, the 0-form symmetries always act as permutations while 1-form symmetries act by phases. This leads to an explicit description of the gauging of these symmetries. One application of our results is a generalization of the equivariant Verlinde formula to the case of general Lie groups. The generalized formula leads to many predictions for the geometry of Hitchin moduli spaces, which we explicitly check in several cases with low genus and SO(3) gauge group.

On Phases of 3d ${\cal N}=2$ Chern-Simons-Matter Theories

We investigate phases of 3d ${\cal N}=2$ Chern-Simons-matter theories, extending to three dimensions the celebrated correspondence between 2d gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten (GWZW) models and non-linear sigma models (NLSMs) with geometric targets. We find that although the correspondence in 3d and 2d are closely related by circle compactification, an important subtlety arises in this process, changing the phase structure of the 3d theory. Namely, the effective theory obtained from the circle compactification of a phase of a 3d ${\cal N}=2$ gauge theory is, in general, different from the phase of the 3d ${\cal N}=2$ theory on ${\mathbb R}^2\times S^{1}$, which means taking phases of a 3d gauge theory does not necessarily commute with compactification. We compute the Witten index of each effective theory to check this observation. Furthermore, when the matter fields have the same non-minimal charges, the 3d ${\cal N}=2$ Chern-Simons-matter theory with a proper Chern-Simons level will decompose into several identical 2d gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) for the same target upon reduction to 2d. To illustrate this phenomenon, we investigate how vacua of the 3d gauge theory for a weighted projective space $W\mathbb{P}_{[l,\cdots,l]}$ move on the field space when we change the radius of $S^{1}$.

Generalized Global Symmetries of $T[M]$ Theories. I

We study reductions of 6d theories on a $d$-dimensional manifold $M_d$, focusing on the interplay between symmetries, anomalies, and dynamics of the resulting $(6-d)$-dimensional theory $T[M_d]$. We refine and generalize the notion of "polarization" to "polarization on $M_d$," which serves to fix the spectrum of local and extended operators in $T[M_d]$. Another important feature of theories $T[M_d]$ is that they often possess higher-group symmetries, such as 2-group and 3-group symmetries. We study the origin of such symmetries as well as physical implications including symmetry breaking and symmetry enhancement in the renormalization group flow. To better probe the IR physics, we also investigate the 't Hooft anomaly of 5d Chern-Simons matter theories. The present paper focuses on developing the general framework as well as the special case of $d=0$ and 1, while an upcoming paper will discuss the case of $d=2$, $3$ and $4$.

Rozansky-Witten geometry of Coulomb branches and logarithmic knot invariants

By studying Rozansky-Witten theory with non-compact target spaces we find new connections with knot invariants whose physical interpretation was not known. This opens up several new avenues, which include a new formulation of $q$-series invariants of 3-manifolds in terms of affine Grassmannians and a generalization of Akutsu-Deguchi-Ohtsuki knot invariants.

Trialities of minimally supersymmetric 2d gauge theories

We study dynamics of two-dimensional N=(0,1) supersymmetric gauge theories. In particular, we propose that there is an infrared triality between certain triples of theories with orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups. The proposal is supported by matching of anomalies and elliptic genera. This triality can be viewed as a (0,1) counterpart of the (0,2) triality proposed earlier by two of the authors and A. Gadde. We also describe the relation between global anomalies in gauge theoretic and sigma-model descriptions, filling in a gap in the present literature.

4-manifolds and topological modular forms

We build a connection between topology of smooth 4-manifolds and the theory of topological modular forms by considering topologically twisted compactification of 6d (1,0) theories on 4-manifolds with flavor symmetry backgrounds. The effective 2d theory has (0,1) supersymmetry and, possibly, a residual flavor symmetry. The equivariant topological Witten genus of this 2d theory then produces a new invariant of the 4-manifold equipped with a principle bundle, valued in the ring of equivariant weakly holomorphic (topological) modular forms. We describe basic properties of this map and present a few simple examples. As a byproduct, we obtain some new results on 't Hooft anomalies of 6d (1,0) theories and a better understanding of the relation between 2d (0,1) theories and TMF spectra.

3d TQFTs from Argyres-Douglas theories

We construct a new class of three-dimensional topological quantum field theories (3d TQFTs) by considering generalized Argyres-Douglas theories on $S^1 \times M_3$ with a non-trivial holonomy of a discrete global symmetry along the $S^1$. For the minimal choice of the holonomy, the resulting 3d TQFTs are non-unitary and semisimple, thus distinguishing themselves from theories of Chern-Simons and Rozansky-Witten types respectively. Changing the holonomy performs a Galois transformation on the TQFT, which can sometimes give rise to more familiar unitary theories such as the $(G_2)_1$ and $(F_4)_1$ Chern-Simons theories. Our construction is based on an intriguing relation between topologically twisted partition functions, wild Hitchin characters, and chiral algebras which, when combined together, relate Coulomb branch and Higgs branch data of the same 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory. We test our proposal by applying localization techniques to the conjectural $\mathcal{N}=1$ UV Lagrangian descriptions of the $(A_1,A_2)$, $(A_1,A_3)$ and $(A_1,D_3)$ theories.

Argyres-Douglas Theories, Chiral Algebras and Wild Hitchin Characters

We use Coulomb branch indices of Argyres-Douglas theories on $S^1 \times L(k,1)$ to quantize moduli spaces ${\cal M}_H$ of wild/irregular Hitchin systems. In particular, we obtain formulae for the "wild Hitchin characters" -- the graded dimensions of the Hilbert spaces from quantization -- for four infinite families of ${\cal M}_H$, giving access to many interesting geometric and topological data of these moduli spaces. We observe that the wild Hitchin characters can always be written as a sum over fixed points in ${\cal M}_H$ under the $U(1)$ Hitchin action, and a limit of them can be identified with matrix elements of the modular transform $ST^kS$ in certain two-dimensional chiral algebras. Although naturally fitting into the geometric Langlands program, the appearance of chiral algebras, which was known previously to be associated with Schur operators but not Coulomb branch operators, is somewhat surprising.

Equivariant Verlinde algebra from superconformal index and Argyres-Seiberg duality

In this paper, we show the equivalence between two seemingly distinct 2d TQFTs: one comes from the "Coulomb branch index" of the class S theory $T[Σ,G]$ on $L(k,1) \times S^1$, the other is the $^LG$ "equivariant Verlinde formula", or equivalently partition function of $^LG_{\mathbb{C}}$ complex Chern-Simons theory on $Σ\times S^1$. We first derive this equivalence using the M-theory geometry and show that the gauge groups appearing on the two sides are naturally $G$ and its Langlands dual $^LG$. When $G$ is not simply-connected, we provide a recipe of computing the index of $T[Σ,G]$ as summation over indices of $T[Σ,\tilde{G}]$ with non-trivial background 't Hooft fluxes, where $\tilde{G}$ is the simply-connected group with the same Lie algebra. Then we check explicitly this relation between the Coulomb index and the equivariant Verlinde formula for $G=SU(2)$ or $SO(3)$. In the end, as an application of this newly found relation, we consider the more general case where $G$ is $SU(N)$ or $PSU(N)$ and show that equivariant Verlinde algebra can be derived using field theory via (generalized) Argyres-Seiberg duality. We also attach a Mathematica notebook that can be used to compute the $SU(3)$ equivariant Verlinde coefficients.

Mirror symmetry with branes by equivariant Verlinde formulae

We find an agreement of equivariant indices of semi-classical homomorphisms between pairwise mirror branes in the GL(2) Higgs moduli space on a Riemann surface. On one side we have the components of the Lagrangian brane of U(1,1) Higgs bundles whose mirror was proposed by Nigel Hitchin to be certain even exterior powers of the hyperholomorphic Dirac bundle on the SL(2) Higgs moduli space. The agreement arises from a mysterious functional equation. This gives strong computational evidence for Hitchin's proposal.
