Resonant semilinear Robin problems with a general potential

We consider a semilinear Robin problem driven by the Laplacian plus an indefinite and unbounded potential. The reaction term is a Carathéodory function which is resonant with respect to any nonprincipal eigenvalue both at $\pm \infty$ and 0. Using a variant of the reduction method, we show that the problem has at least two nontrivial smooth solutions.

Pairs of positive solutions for resonant singular equations with the $p$-Laplacian

We consider a nonlinear elliptic equation driven by the Dirichlet $p$-Laplacian with a singular term and a $(p-1)$-linear perturbation which is resonant at $+\infty$ with respect to the principal eigenvalue. Using variational tools, together with suitable truncation and comparison techniques, we show the existence of at least two positive smooth solutions.

Nodal solutions for the Robin $p$-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential and a general reaction term

We consider a nonlinear Robin problem driven by the $p$-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential. The reaction term is of arbitrary growth and only conditions near zero are imposed. Using critical point theory together with suitable truncation and perturbation techniques and comparison principles, we show that the problem admits a sequence of distinct smooth nodal solutions converging to zero in $C^1(\overlineΩ)$.

Simply Connected 3-Manifolds with a Dense Set of Ends of Specified Genus

We show that for every sequence $(n_i)$, where each $n_i$ is either an integer greater than 1 or is $\infty$, there exists a simply connected open 3-manifold $M$ with a countable dense set of ends $\{e_i\}$ so that, for every $i$, the genus of end $e_i$ is equal to $n_i$. In addition, the genus of the ends not in the dense set is shown to be less than or equal to 2. These simply connected 3-manifolds are constructed as the complements of certain Cantor sets in $S^3$. The methods used require careful analysis of the genera of ends and new techniques for dealing with infinite genus.

Yamabe-type equations on Carnot groups

This article is concerned with a class of elliptic equations on Carnot groups depending of one real positive parameter and involving a critical nonlinearity. As a special case of our results we prove the existence of at least one nontrivial solution for a subelliptic critical equation defined on a smooth and bounded domain $D$ of the {Heisenberg group} $\mathbb{H}^n=\mathbb{C}^n\times \mathbb{R}$. Our approach is based on pure variational methods and locally sequentially weakly lower semicontinuous arguments.

Nonlinear problems on the Sierpiński gasket

This paper concerns with a class of elliptic equations on fractal domains depending on a real parameter. Our approach is based on variational methods. More precisely, the existence of at least two non-trivial weak (strong) solutions for the treated problem is obtained exploiting a local minimum theorem for differentiable functionals defined on reflexive Banach spaces. A special case of the main result improves a classical application of the Mountain Pass Theorem in the fractal setting, given by Falconer and Hu (1999).

Multiple solutions of nonlinear equations involving the square root of the Laplacian

In this paper we examine the existence of multiple solutions of parametric fractional equations involving the square root of the Laplacian $A_{1/2}$ in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\geq 2$) and with Dirichlet zero-boundary conditions, i.e. \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} A_{1/2}u=λf(u) & \mbox{ in } Ω\\ u=0 & \mbox{ on } \partialΩ. \end{array}\right. \end{equation*} The existence of at least three $L^{\infty}$-bounded weak solutions is established for certain values of the parameter $λ$ requiring that the nonlinear term $f$ is continuous and with a suitable growth. Our approach is based on variational arguments and a variant of Caffarelli-Silvestre's extension method.

Multiple solutions for resonant problems of the Robin $p$-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential

We study a nonlinear boundary value problem driven by the $p$-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential with Robin boundary condition. The reaction term is a Carathéodory function which is asymptotically resonant at $\pm\infty$ with respect to a nonprincipal Ljusternik-Schnirelmann eigenvalue. Using variational methods, together with Morse theory and truncation-perturbation techniques, we show that the problem has at least three nontrivial smooth solutions, two of which have a fixed sign.

Sensitivity analysis for optimal control problems governed by nonlinear evolution inclusions

We consider a nonlinear optimal control problem governed by a nonlinear evolution inclusion and depending on a parameter $λ$. First we examine the dynamics of the problem and establish the nonemptiness of the solution set and produce continuous selections of the solution multifunction $ξ\mapsto S(ξ)$ ($ξ$ being the initial condition). These results are proved in a very general framework and are of independent interest as results about evolution inclusions. Then we use them to study the sensitivity properties of the optimal control problem. We show that we have Hadamard well-posedness (continuity of the value function) and we establish the continuity properties of the optimal multifunction. Finally we present an application on a nonlinear parabolic distributed parameter system.

On the Alexandroff-Borsuk problem

We investigate the classical Alexandroff-Borsuk problem in the category of non-triangulable manifolds: Given an $n$-dimensional compact non-triangulable manifold $M^n$ and $\varepsilon > 0$, does there exist an $\varepsilon$-map of $M^n$ onto an $n$-dimensional finite polyhedron which induces a homotopy equivalence?

Pauli gradings on Lie superalgebras and graded codimension growth

We introduce grading on certain finite dimensional simple Lie superalgebras of type $P(t)$ by elementary abelian 2-group. This grading gives rise to Pauli matrices and is a far generalization of $(\mathbb Z_2\times \mathbb Z_2)$-grading on Lie algebra of $(2\times 2)$-traceless matrices. We use this grading for studying numerical invariants of polyomial identities of Lie superalgebras. In particular, we compute graded PI-exponent corresponding to Pauli grading.

Identities of graded simple algebras

We study identities of finite dimensional algebras over a field of characteristic zero, graded by an arbitrary groupoid $Γ$. First we prove that its graded colength has a polynomially bounded growth. For any graded simple algebra $A$ we prove the existence of the graded PI-exponent, provided that $Γ$ is a commutative semigroup. If $A$ is simple in a non-graded sense the existence of the graded PI-exponent is proved without any restrictions on $Γ$.

On some variational algebraic problems

In this paper by exploiting critical point theory, the existence of two distinct nontrivial solutions for a nonlinear algebraic system with a parameter is established. Our goal is achieved by requiring an appropriate behavior of the nonlinear term $f$ at zero and at infinity. Some applications to difference equations are also presented.

On Gehring-Martin-Tan groups with an elliptic generator

The Gehring-Martin-Tan inequality for 2-generator subgroups of PSL(2,C) is one of the best known discreteness conditions. A Kleinian group $G$ is called a Gehring-Martin-Tan group if the equality holds for the group $G$. We give a method for constructing Gehring-Martin-Tan groups with a generator of order four and present some examples. These groups arise as groups of finite volume hyperbolic 3-orbifolds.
