On some generalization of the bicyclic semigroup: the topological version

We show that every Hausdorff Baire topology $τ$ on $\mathcal{C}=\langle a,b\mid a^2b=a, ab^2=b\rangle$ such that $(\mathcal{C},τ)$ is a semitopological semigroup is discrete and we construct a nondiscrete Hausdorff semigroup topology on $\mathcal{C}$. We also discuss the closure of a semigroup $\mathcal{C}$ in a semitopological semigroup and prove that $\mathcal{C}$ does not embed into a topological semigroup with the countably compact square.

On well-splitting posets

We introduce a class of proper posets which is preserved under countable support iterations, includes $ω^ω$-bounding, Cohen, Miller, and Mathias posets associated to filters with the Hurewicz covering properties, and has the property that the ground model reals remain splitting and unbounded in corresponding extensions. Our results may be considered as a possible path towards solving variations of the famous Roitman problem.

Controlled surgery and $\mathbb{L}$-homology

This paper presents an alternative approach to controlled surgery obstructions. The obstruction for a degree one normal map $(f,b): M^n \rightarrow X^n$ with control map $q: X^n \rightarrow B$ to complete controlled surgery is an element $σ^c (f, b) \in H_n (B, \mathbb{L})$, where $M^n, X^n$ are topological manifolds of dimension $n \geq 5$. Our proof uses essentially the geometrically defined $\mathbb{L}$-spectrum as described by Nicas (going back to Quinn) and some well known homotopy theory. We also outline the construction of the algebraically defined obstruction, and we explicitly describe the assembly map $H_n (B, \mathbb{L}) \rightarrow L_n (π_1 (B))$ in terms of forms in the case $n \equiv 0 (4)$. Finally, we explicitly determine the canonical map $H_n (B, \mathbb{L}) \rightarrow H_n (B, L_0)$.

On Steenrod $\mathbb{L}$-homology, generalized manifolds, and surgery

The aim of this paper is to show the importance of the Steenrod construction of homology theories for the disassembly process in surgery on a generalized $n$-manifold $X^n$, in order to produce an element of generalized homology theory, which is basic for calculations. In particular, we show how to construct an element of the $n$-th Steenrod homology group $H^{st}_{n} (X^{n}, \mathbb{L}^+),$ where $\mathbb{L}^+$ is the connected covering spectrum of the periodic surgery spectrum $\mathbb{L}$, avoiding the use of the geometric splitting procedure, which is standardly used in surgery on topological manifolds.

s-Cobordism classification of $4$-manifolds through the group of homotopy self-equivalences

The aim of this paper is to give an $s$-cobordism classification of topological $4$-manifolds in terms of the standard invariants using the group of homotopy self-equivalences. Hambleton and Kreck constructed a braid to study the group of homotopy self-equivalences of $4$-manifolds. Using this braid together with the modified surgery theory of Kreck, we give an $s$-cobordism classification for certain $4$-manifolds with fundamental group $π$, such that cd $π\leq 2$.

Classifying homogeneous ultrametric spaces up to coarse equivalence

For every metric space $X$ we introduce two cardinal characteristics $\mathrm{cov}^\flat(X)$ and $\mathrm{cov}^\sharp(X)$ describing the capacity of balls in $X$. We prove that these cardinal characteristics are invariant under coarse equivalence and prove that two ultrametric spaces $X,Y$ are coarsely equivalent if $\mathrm{cov}^\flat(X)=\mathrm{cov}^\sharp(X)=\mathrm{cov}^\flat(Y)=\mathrm{cov}^\sharp(Y)$. This result implies that an ultrametric space $X$ is coarsely equivalent to an isometrically homogeneous ultrametric space if and only if $\mathrm{cov}^\flat(X)=\mathrm{cov}^\sharp(X)$. Moreover, two isometrically homogeneous ultrametric spaces $X,Y$ are coarsely equivalent if and only if $\mathrm{cov}^\sharp(X)=\mathrm{cov}^\sharp(Y)$ if and only if each of these spaces coarsely embeds into the other space. This means that the coarse structure of an isometrically homogeneous ultrametric space $X$ is completely determined by the value of the cardinal $\mathrm{cov}^\sharp(X)=\mathrm{cov}^\flat(X)$.

Existence and multiplicity of solutions for fractional Schrödinger-Kirchhoff equations with Trudinger-Moser nonlinearity

We study the existence and multiplicity of solutions for a class of fractional Schrödinger-Kirchhoff type equations with the Trudinger-Moser nonlinearity. More precisely, we consider \begin{gather*} \begin{cases} M\big(\|u\|^{N/s}\big)\left[(-Δ)^s_{N/s}u+V(x)|u|^{\frac{N}{s}-1}u\right]= f(x,u) +λh(x)|u|^{p-2}u\, &{\rm in}\ \ \mathbb{R}^N,\\ \|u\|=\left(\iint_{\mathbb{R}^{2N}}\frac{|u(x)-u(y)|^{N/s}}{|x-y|^{2N}}dxdy+\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}V(x)|u|^{N/s}dx\right)^{s/N}, \end{cases}\end{gather*} where $M:[0,\infty]\rightarrow [0,\infty)$ is a continuous function, $s\in (0,1)$, $N\geq2$, $λ>0$ is a parameter, $1<p<\infty$, $(-Δ)^s_{N/s}$ is the fractional $N/s$--Laplacian, $V:\mathbb{R}^N\rightarrow(0,\infty)$ is a continuous function, $f:\mathbb{R}^N\times\mathbb{R}\rightarrow\mathbb{R} $ is a continuous function, and $h:\mathbb{R}^N\rightarrow[0,\infty)$ is a measurable function. First, using the mountain pass theorem, a nonnegative solution is obtained when $f$ satisfies exponential growth conditions and $λ$ is large enough, and we prove that the solution converges to zero in $W_V^{s,N/s}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ as $λ\rightarrow\infty$. Then, using the Ekeland variational principle, a nonnegative nontrivial solution is obtained when $λ$ is small enough, and we show that the solution converges to zero in $W_V^{s,N/s}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ as $λ\rightarrow0$. Furthermore, using the genus theory, infinitely many solutions are obtained when $M$ is a special function and $λ$ is small enough. We note that our paper covers a novel feature of Kirchhoff problems, that is, the Kirchhoff function $M(0)=0$.

The relationship of generalized manifolds to Poincaré duality complexes and topological manifolds

The primary purpose of this paper concerns the relation of (compact) generalized manifolds to finite Poincaré duality complexes (PD complexes). The problem is that an arbitrary generalized manifold $X$ is always an ENR space, but it is not necessarily a complex. Moreover, finite PD complexes require the Poincaré duality with coefficients in the group ring $Λ$ ($Λ$-complexes). Standard homology theory implies that $X$ is a $\mathbb{Z}$-PD complex. Therefore by Browder's theorem, $X$ has a Spivak normal fibration which in turn, determines a Thom class of the pair $(N,\partial N)$ of a mapping cylinder neighborhood of $X$ in some Euclidean space. Then $X$ satisfies the $Λ$-Poincaré duality if this class induces an isomorphism with $Λ$-coefficients. Unfortunately, the proof of Browder's theorem gives only isomorphisms with $\mathbb{Z}$-coefficients. It is also not very helpful that $X$ is homotopy equivalent to a finite complex $K$, because $K$ is not automatically a $Λ$-PD complex. Therefore it is convenient to introduce $Λ$-PD structures. To prove their existence on $X$, we use the construction of $2$-patch spaces and some fundamental results of Bryant, Ferry, Mio, and Weinberger. Since the class of all $Λ$-PD complexes does not contain all generalized manifolds, we appropriately enlarge this class and then describe (i.e. recognize) generalized manifolds within this enlarged class in terms of the Gromov-Hausdorff metric

On the fractional Schrödinger-Kirchhoff equations with electromagnetic fields and critical nonlinearity

We consider the fractional Schrödinger-Kirchhoff equations with electromagnetic fields and critical nonlinearity $\varepsilon^{2s}M([u]_{s,A_\varepsilon}^2)(-Δ)_{A_\varepsilon}^su + V(x)u =$ $|u|^{2_s^\ast-2}u + h(x,|u|^2)u,$ $\ \ x\in \mathbb{R}^N,$ where $ u(x) \rightarrow 0$ as $|x| \rightarrow \infty,$ and $(-Δ)_{A_\varepsilon}^s$ is the fractional magnetic operator with $0<s<1$, $2_s^\ast = 2N/(N-2s),$ $M : \mathbb{R}^{+}_{0} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{+}$ is a continuous nondecreasing function, $V:\mathbb{R}^N \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^+_0,$ and $A: \mathbb{R}^N \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^N$ are the electric and the magnetic potential, respectively. By using the fractional version of the concentration compactness principle and variational methods, we show that the above problem: (i) has at least one solution provided that $\varepsilon < \mathcal {E}$; and (ii) for any $m^\ast \in \mathbb{N}$, has $m^\ast$ pairs of solutions if $\varepsilon < \mathcal {E}_{m^\ast}$, where $\mathcal {E}$ and $\mathcal {E}_{m^\ast}$ are sufficiently small positive numbers. Moreover, these solutions $u_\varepsilon \rightarrow 0$ as $\varepsilon \rightarrow 0$.

Products of Hurewicz spaces in the Laver model

This article is devoted to the interplay between forcing with fusion and combinatorial covering properties. We illustrate this interplay by proving that in the Laver model for the consistency of the Borel's conjecture, the product of any two metrizable spaces with the Hurewicz property has the Menger property.

Non-meager free sets and independent families

Our main result is that, given a collection $\mathcal{R}$ of meager relations on a Polish space $X$ such that $|\mathcal{R}|\leqω$, there exists a dense Baire subspace $F$ of $X$ (equivalently, a nowhere meager subset $F$ of $X$) such that $F$ is $R$-free for every $R\in\mathcal{R}$. This generalizes a recent result of Banakh and Zdomskyy. As an application, we show that there exists a non-meager independent family on $ω$, and define the corresponding cardinal invariant. Furthermore, assuming Martin's Axiom for countable posets, our result can be strengthened by substituting "$|\mathcal{R}|\leqω$" with "$|\mathcal{R}|<\mathfrak{c}$" and "Baire" with "completely Baire".
