Controlled Hopf Bifurcation of a storage-ring free-electron laser

Local bifurcation control is a topic of fundamental importance in the field of nonlinear dynamical systems. We discuss an original example within the context of storage-ring free-electron laser physics by presenting a new model that enables analytical insight into the system dynamics. The transition between the stable and the unstable regimes, depending on the temporal overlapping between the light stored in the optical cavity and the electrons circulating into the ring, is found to be a Hopf bifurcation. A feedback procedure is implemented and shown to provide an effective stabilization of the unstable steady state.

Self-gravitating systems in a three-dimensional expanding Universe

The non-linear evolution of one-dimensional perturbations in a three-dimensional expanding Universe is considered. A general Lagrangian scheme is derived, and compared to two previously introduced approximate models. These models are simulated with heap-based event-driven numerical procedure, that allows for the study of large systems, averaged over many realizations of random initial conditions. One of the models is shown to be qualitatively, and, in some respects, concerning mass aggregation, quantitatively similar to the adhesion model.

A one-dimensional toy model of globular clusters

We introduce a one-dimensional toy model of globular clusters. The model is a version of the well-known gravitational sheets system, where we take additionally into account mass and energy loss by evaporation of stars at the boundaries. Numerical integration by the "exact" event-driven dynamics is performed, for initial uniform density and Gaussian random velocities. Two distinct quasi-stationary asymptotic regimes are attained, depending on the initial energy of the system. We guess the forms of the density and velocity profiles which fit numerical data extremely well and allow to perform an independent calculation of the self-consistent gravitational potential. Some power-laws for the asymptotic number of stars and for the collision times are suggested.

Heap-based algorithm for one-dimensional particle systems

A fast algorithm to study one-dimensional self-gravitating systems, and, more generally, systems that are Lagrangian integrable between collisions, is presented. The algorithm is event-driven, and uses a heap-ordered set of predicted future events. In the limit of large number of particles $N$, the operation count is dominated by the cost of reordering the heap after each event, which goes asymptotically as $\log N$. Some applications are discussed in detail.

On the dynamics of a self-gravitating medium with random and non-random initial conditions

The dynamics of a one-dimensional self-gravitating medium, with initial density almost uniform is studied. Numerical experiments are performed with ordered and with Gaussian random initial conditions. The phase space portraits are shown to be qualitatively similar to shock waves, in particular with initial conditions of Brownian type. The PDF of the mass distribution is investigated.
