High-Impact Astronomical Observatories

We derive the ranking of the astronomical observatories with the highest impact in astronomy based on the citation analysis of papers published in 2006. We also present a description of the methodology we use to derive this ranking. The current ranking is lead by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, followed by Swift and the Hubble Space Telescope.

HST NIR Snapshot Survey of 3CR Radio Source Counterparts II: An Atlas and Inventory of the Host Galaxies, Mergers and Companions

We present the second part of an H-band (1.6 microns) atlas of z<0.3 3CR radio galaxies, using the Hubble Space Telescope Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (HST NICMOS2). We present new imaging for 21 recently acquired sources, and host galaxy modeling for the full sample of 101 (including 11 archival) -- an 87% completion rate. Two different modeling techniques are applied, following those adopted by the galaxy morphology and the quasar host galaxy communities. Results are compared, and found to be in excellent agreement, although the former breaks down in the case of strongly nucleated sources. Companion sources are tabulated, and the presence of mergers, tidal features, dust disks and jets are catalogued. The tables form a catalogue for those interested in the structural and morphological dust-free host galaxy properties of the 3CR sample, and for comparison with morphological studies of quiescent galaxies and quasar host galaxies. Host galaxy masses are estimated, and found to typically lie at around 2*10^11 solar masses. In general, the population is found to be consistent with the local population of quiescent elliptical galaxies, but with a longer tail to low Sersic index, mainly consisting of low-redshift (z<0.1) and low-radio-power (FR I) sources. A few unusually disky FR II host galaxies are picked out for further discussion. Nearby external sources are identified in the majority of our images, many of which we argue are likely to be companion galaxies or merger remnants. Infrared Emission from the Nearby Cool Core Cluster Abell 2597

We observed the brightest central galaxy (BCG) in the nearby (z=0.0821) cool core galaxy cluster Abell 2597 with the IRAC and MIPS instruments on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The BCG was clearly detected in all Spitzer bandpasses, including the 70 and 160 micron wavebands. We report aperture photometry of the BCG. The spectral energy distribution exhibits a clear excess in the FIR over a Rayleigh-Jeans stellar tail, indicating a star formation rate of ~4-5 solar masses per year, consistent with the estimates from the UV and its H-alpha luminosity. This large FIR luminosity is consistent with that of a starburst or a Luminous Infrared Galaxy (LIRG), but together with a very massive and old population of stars that dominate the energy output of the galaxy. If the dust is at one temperature, the ratio of 70 to 160 micron fluxes indicate that the dust emitting mid-IR in this source is somewhat hotter than the dust emitting mid-IR in two BCGs at higher-redshift (z~0.2-0.3) and higher FIR luminosities observed earlier by Spitzer, in clusters Abell 1835 and Zwicky 3146.

Supermassive black holes in the Sbc spiral galaxies NGC 3310, NGC 4303 and NGC 4258

We present new Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) observations of three spiral galaxies, NGC 4303, NGC 3310 and NGC 4258. The bright optical emission lines H$α$ $λ$ $6564 Å$, [NII] $λ$$λ$ $6549,6585 Å$ and [SII] $λ$$λ$ $ 6718,6732 Å$ were used to study the kinematics of the ionized gas in the nuclear region of each galaxy with a $\sim 0.07\arcsec$ spatial resolution. In NGC 3310, the observed gas kinematics is well matched by a circularly rotating disk model but we are only able to set an upper limit to the BH mass which, taking into account the allowed disk inclinations, varies in the range $5.0 \times 10^{6} - 4.2 \times 10^{7} M_{\odot}$ at the 95% confidence level. In NGC 4303 the kinematical data require the presence of a BH with mass $M_{BH}=(5.0)^{+0.87}_{-2.26}\times 10^{6}M_{\odot}$ (for a disk inclination $i=70$ deg).In NGC 4258, the observed kinematics require the presence of a black hole with $M_{BH}= (7.9)^{+6.2}_{-3.5} \times 10^{7}M_{\odot}$ ($i=60$ deg). This result is in good agreement with the published value $(3.9 \pm 0.1) \times 10^{7} M_{\odot}$, derived from $H_{2}O$-maser observations. Our attempt at measuring BH masses in these 3 late type Sbc spiral galaxies has shown that these measurements are very challenging and at the limit of the highest spatial resolution currently available. Nonetheless our estimates are in good agreement with the scaling relations between black holes and their host spheroids suggesting that (i) they are reliable and (ii) black holes in spiral galaxies follows the same scaling relations as those in more massive early-type galaxies. A crucial test for the gas kinematical method, the correct recovery of the known BH mass in NGC 4258, has been successful. [abridged]

Discovery of thirteen novae candidates in M87

We have made thirteen positive identifications of near-ultraviolet (NUV) transient sources in the giant elliptical galaxy M87 using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We give a representative sample of the light curves that we derive for these transients, and based on their characteristics we identify them as classical novae candidates. We obtain a hard lower limit for the nova rate in M87 of 64 novae per year. Our results suggest an enhancement on the frequency of nova events towards the nucleus of the galaxy. No correlation is found with either jet activity or the position of present day globular clusters.

Hubble Space Telescope Near-Infrared Snapshot Survey of 3CR radio source counterparts at low redshift

We present newly acquired images of the near-infrared counterpart of 3CR radio sources. All the sources were selected to have a redshift of less than 0.3 to allow us to obtain the highest spatial resolution. The observations were carried out as a snapshot program using the Near-Infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrograph (NICMOS) on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). In this paper we describe 69 radio galaxies observed for the first time with NICMOS during HST cycle 13. All the objects presented here are elliptical galaxies. However, each of them has unique characteristics such as close companions, dust lanes, unresolved nuclei, arc-like features, globular clusters and jets clearly visible from the images or with basic galaxy subtraction.

An optical-IR jet in 3C133

We report the discovery of a new optical-IR synchrotron jet in the radio galaxy 3C133 from our HST/NICMOS snapshot survey. The jet and eastern hotspot are well resolved, and visible at both optical and IR wavelengths. The IR jet follows the morphology of the inner part of the radio jet, with three distinct knots identified with features in the radio. The radio-IR SED's of the knots are examined, along with those of two more distant hotspots at the eastern extreme of the radio feature. The detected emission appears to be synchrotron, with peaks in the NIR for all except one case, which exhibits a power-law spectrum throughout.

The supermassive black hole in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5252

We present results from HST/STIS long-slit spectroscopy of the gas motions in the nuclear region of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5252. The observed velocity field is consistent with gas in regular rotation with superposed localized patches of disturbed gas. The dynamics of the circumnuclear gas can be accurately reproduced by adding to the stellar mass component a compact dark mass of MBH = 0.95 (-0.45;+1.45) 10E9 M(sun), very likely a supermassive black hole. Contrarily to results obtained in similar studies rotational broadening is sufficient to reproduce also the behaviour of line widths. The MBH estimated for NGC 5252 is in good agreement with the correlation between MBH and bulge mass. The comparison with the MBH vs sigma relationship is less stringent (mostly due to the relatively large error in sigma); NGC 5252 is located above the best fit line by between 0.3 and 1.2 dex, i.e. 1 - 4 times the dispersion of the correlation. Both the galaxy's and MBH of NGC 5252 are substantially larger than those usually estimated for Seyfert galaxies but, on the other hand, they are typical of radio-quiet quasars. Combining the determined MBH with the hard X-ray luminosity, we estimate that NGC 5252 is emitting at a fraction ~ 0.005 of L(Edd). In this sense, this active nucleus appears to be a quasar relic, now probably accreting at a low rate, rather than a low black hole mass counterpart of a QSO.

Hubble Space Telescope Science Metrics

Since its launch in April 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has produced an increasing flow of scientific results. The large number of refereed publications based on HST data allows a detailed evaluation of the effectiveness of this observatory and of its scientific programs. This paper presents the results of selected science metrics related to paper counts, citation counts, citation history, high-impact papers, and the most productive programs and most cited papers, through the end of 2003. All these indicators point towards the high-quality scientific impact of HST.

Supermassive Black Holes in Spiral Galaxies

We have embarked in an HST program to determine the masses of black holes in spiral galaxies directly by measuring the line emission arising from an extended accretion disk. For each of the galaxies in our sample we have measured the rotation curve and determined the mass distribution within the inner 5-50 pc. We have modeled the stellar mass component using the photometric data from existing HST images and using both data sets we have derived the masses of the black holes in each galaxy. These results will be very important in clarifying the role of the black hole in powering the AGN, will shed light into the effectiveness of the accretion mechanisms and finally will be important in addressing the fundamental issue of unification for Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies.

Optical Structure and Physics of the M87 Jet

We summarize HST observations of the M87 jet, concentrating on polarimetry and spectral index maps, and compare its optical and radio structures. The evidence now supports a stratified model for the structure of the jet, whereby high-energy, optical synchrotron emitting particles occupy physically different regions of the jet, closer to the jet axis, with different magnetic field configurations. It is in these regions where the shocks that produce the knots in the inner jet appear to originate. Knot regions have optical spectra which are much flatter than average for the jet, with the flattest-spectrum regions coinciding with flux maxima of knots. These same regions are preceded by regions where perpendicular magnetic fields are seen. Thus not only do we see all the necessary ingredients for {\it in situ} particle acceleration in the knots, but there is now fairly direct evidence for it as well. By tracking the changes in radio-optical and optical spectral index in the knot regions, we can comment on acceleration and cooling timescales in each knot.

The Optical-Near-IR Spectrum of the M87 Jet From HST Observations

We present 1998 HST observations of M87 which yield the first single-epoch optical and radio-optical spectral index images of the jet at $0.15''$ resolution. We find $<α_{ro} > \approx 0.67$, comparable to previous measurements, and $<α_o > \approx 0.9$ ($F_ν\propto ν^{-α}$), slightly flatter than previous workers. Reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. These observations reveal a large variety of spectral slopes. Bright knots exhibit flatter spectra than interknot regions. The flattest spectra ($α_o \sim 0.5-0.6$; comparable to or flatter than $α_{ro}$) are found in two inner jet knots (D-East and HST-1) which contain the fastest superluminal components. In knots A, B and C, $α_o$ and $α_{ro}$ are essentially anti-correlated. Near the flux maxima of knots HST-1 and F, changes in $α_{ro}$ lag changes in $α_o$, but in knots D and E, the opposite relationship is observed. This is further evidence that radio and optical emissions in the M87 jet come from substantially different physical regions. The delays observed in the inner jet are consistent with localized particle acceleration, with $t_{acc} << t_{cool}$ for optically emitting electrons in knots HST-1 and F, and $t_{acc} \sim t_{cool}$ for optically emitting electrons in knots D and E. Synchrotron models yield $ν_B \gsim 10^{16}$ Hz for knots D, A and B, and somewhat lower values, $ν_B \sim 10^{15}- 10^{16}$ Hz, in other regions. If X-ray emissions from knots A, B and D are co-spatial with optical and radio emission, we can strongly rule out the ``continuous injection'' model. Because of the short lifetimes of X-ray synchrotron emitting particles, the X-ray emission likely fills volumes much smaller than the optical emission regions.

Peering through the dust: Evidence for a supermassive Black Hole at the nucleus of Centaurus A from VLT IR spectroscopy

We used the near infrared spectrometer ISAAC at the ESO 'Very Large Telescope' to map the velocity field of Centaurus A (NGC 5128) at several position angles and locations in the central 20" of the galaxy. The high spatial resolution (~0.5") velocity fields from both ionized and molecular gas (PaBeta, [FeII], BrGamma, and H2) are not compromised by either excitation effects or obscuration. We identify three distinct kinematical systems: (i) a rotating 'nuclear disk' of ionized gas, confined to the inner 2", the counterpart of the PaAlpha feature previously revealed by HST/NICMOS imaging; (ii) a ring-like system with a ~6" inner radius detected only in H2, likely the counterpart of the 100pc-scale structure detected in CO by other authors; (iii) a normal extended component of gas rotating in the galactic potential. The nuclear disk is in keplerian rotation around a central mass concentration, dark (M/L>20 Msun/LsunK) and point-like at the spatial resolution of the data (R<0.25" ~4pc). We interpret this mass concentration as a supermassive black hole. Its dynamical mass based on the line velocities and disk inclination (i>15deg) is M=2(+3.0;-1.4) 10^8 Msun. The ring-like system is probably characterized by non-circular motions; a 'figure-of-8' pattern observed in the H2 position-velocity diagram might provide kinematical evidence for the presence of a nuclear bar.

Unveiling the Active Nucleus of Centaurus A

We report new HST WFPC2 and NICMOS observations of the center of the nearest radio galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128) and discuss their implications for our understanding of the active nucleus and jet. We detect the active nucleus in the near-IR (K and H) and, for the first time, in the optical (I and V), deriving the spectral energy distribution of the nucleus from the radio to X-rays. The optical and part of the near-IR emission can be explained by the extrapolation of the X-ray power law reddened by A_V~14mag, a value consistent with other independent estimates. The 20pc-scale nuclear disk discovered by Schreier et al. (1998) is detected in the [FeII] 1.64mic line and presents a morphology similar to that observed in Pa alpha with a [FeII]/Pa alpha ratio typical of low ionization Seyfert galaxies and LINERs. NICMOS 3 Pa alpha observations in a 50"x50" circumnuclear region suggest enhanced star formation (~0.3Msun/yr) at the edges of the putative bar seen with ISO, perhaps due to shocks driven into the gas. The light profile, reconstructed from V, H and K observations, shows that Centaurus A has a core profile with a resolved break at ~4" and suggests a black--hole mass of ~10^9 Msun. A linear blue structure aligned with the radio/X-ray jet may indicate a channel of relatively low reddening in which dust has been swept away by the jet.

HST and Palomar Imaging of GRB 990123: Implications for the Nature of Gamma-Ray Bursts and their Hosts

We report on HST and Palomar optical images of the field of GRB 990123, obtained on 8 and 9 February 1999. We find that the optical transient (OT) associated with GRB 990123 is located on an irregular galaxy, with magnitude V=24.20 +/- 0.15. The strong metal absorption lines seen in the spectrum of the OT, along with the low probability of a chance superposition, lead us to conclude that this galaxy is the host of the GRB. The OT is projected within the ~1'' visible stellar field of the host, nearer the edge than the center. We cannot, on this basis, rule out the galactic nucleus as the site of the GRB, since the unusual morphology of the host may be the result of an ongoing galactic merger, but our demonstration that this host galaxy has extremely blue optical to infrared colors more strongly supports an association between GRBs and star formation. We find that the OT magnitude on 1999 Feb 9.05, V = 25.45 +/- 0.15, is about 1.5 mag fainter than expected from extrapolation of the decay rate found in earlier observations. A detailed analysis of the OT light curve suggests that its fading has gone through three distinct phases: an early rapid decline (f_{nu} \propto t^{-1.6} for t < 0.1 days), a slower intermediate decline power-law decay (f_{nu} \propto t^{-1.1} for 0.1 < t < 2 days), and then a more rapid decay (at least as steep as (f_ν \propto t^{-1.8} for t > 2 days). The break to steeper slope at late times may provide evidence that the optical emission from this GRB was highly beamed.

Evidence for a 20pc disk at the nucleus of Centaurus A

We report HST NICMOS observations of the central region of NGC 5128 at 2.2mic and in Paschen Alpha (PA). The continuum images show extended emission typical of an elliptical galaxy and a strong unresolved central source we identify as the nucleus of the galaxy. Its position is consistent with ground-based IR and radio data, and with the peak of reddening found with WF/PC-1. In PA, we detect a prominent elongated structure, centered on the nucleus, extended by ~2" at a position angle of 33deg, and with a major to minor axis ratio of ~2. We interpret this as an inclined, ~40 parsec diameter, thin nuclear disk of ionized gas rather than a jet-gas cloud interaction. We do see several weaker PA features, some of which may be circumnuclear gas clouds shocked by the X-ray/radio jet. The disk is one of the smallest ever observed at the nucleus of an AGN. It is not perpendicular to the jet, but consistent with being oriented along the major axis of the bulge. If it represents the warped outer portion of an accretion disk around a black hole, we conclude that even on the scale of a few parsecs, the disk is dominated by the galaxy gravitational potential and not directly related to the symmetry axis of the AGN.

HST/STIS Observations of the Optical Counterpart to GRB 970228

We report on observations of the fading optical counterpart of the gamma-ray burst GRB 970228, made on 4~September~1997 using the STIS CCD on the Hubble Space Telescope. The unresolved counterpart is detected at V=28 +/- 0.25, consistent with a continued power-law decline with exponent -1.14 +/- 0.05. No proper motion is detected, in contradiction of an earlier claim. The counterpart is located within, but near the edge of, a faint extended source with diameter ~0."8 and integrated magnitude 25.7 +/- 0.25. Comparison with WFPC2 data taken one month after the initial burst and NTT data taken on March 13 shows no evidence for fading of the extended emission. After adjusting for the probable Galactic extinction in the direction of GRB 970228 of A_v=0.7, we find that the observed nebula is consistent with the sizes of galaxies of comparable magnitude found in the Hubble Deep Field and other deep HST images, and that only 2% of the sky is covered by galaxies of similar or greater surface brightness. We therefore conclude that the extended source observed about GRB 970228 is most likely a galaxy at moderate redshift, and is almost certainly the host of the gamma-ray burst.
