Gorenstein-duality for one-dimensional almost complete intersections-with an application to non-isolated real singularities

We give a generalization of the duality of a zero-dimensional complete intersection to the case of one-dimensional almost complete intersections, which results in a {\em Gorenstein module} $M=I/J$. In the real case the resulting pairing has a signature, which we show to be constant under flat deformations. In the special case of a non-isolated real hypersurface singularity $f$ with a one-dimensional critical locus, we relate the signature on the jacobian module $I/J_f$ to the Euler characteristic of the positive and negative Milnor fibre, generalising the result for isolated critical points. An application to real curves in $¶^2(\R)$ of even degree is given.

Tables of Calabi--Yau equations

The main part of this paper is a big table containing what we believe to be a complete list of all fourth order equations of Calabi--Yau type known so far. In the text preceding the tables we explain what a differential equation of Calabi--Yau type is and we briefly discuss how we found these equations. We also describe an electronic version of this list.

On the monodromy of the moduli space of Calabi-Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in $\mathbb{P}^3$

It is a fundamental problem in geometry to decide which moduli spaces of polarized algebraic varieties are embedded by their period maps as Zariski open subsets of locally Hermitian symmetric domains. In the present work we prove that the moduli space of Calabi-Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in $\mathbb{P}^3$ does {\em not} have this property. We show furthermore that the monodromy group of a good family is Zariski dense in the corresponding symplectic group. Moreover, we study a natural sublocus which we call hyperelliptic locus, over which the variation of Hodge structures is naturally isomorphic to wedge product of a variation of Hodge structures of weight one. It turns out the hyperelliptic locus does not extend to a Shimura subvariety of type III (Siegel space) within the moduli space. Besides general Hodge theory, representation theory and computational commutative algebra, one of the proofs depends on a new result on the tensor product decomposition of complex polarized variations of Hodge structures.

Hodge classes associated to 1-parameter families of Calabi-Yau 3-folds

We use $L^2$-Higgs cohomology to determine the Hodge numbers of the parabolic cohomology $H^1(\bar S, j_*\V)$, where the local system $\V$ arises from the third primitive cohomology of family of Calabi-Yau threefolds over a curve $\bar S$. The method gives a way to predict the presence of algebraic 2-cycles in the total space of the family and is applied to some examples.

Dwork Congruences and reflexive Polytopes

We show that the coefficients of the power series expansion of the principal period of a Laurent polynomial satisfy strong congruence properties. These congruences play a key role in the explicit p-adic analytic continuation of the unit root.

A Quintic Hypersurface in $\PP^8(\CC)$ with Many Nodes

We construct a hypersurface of degree 5 in projective space $\PP^8(\CC)$ which contains exactly 23436 ordinary nodes and no further singularities. This limits the maximum number $μ_{8}(5)$ of ordinary nodes a hyperquintic in $\PP^8(\CC)$ can have to $23436 \leq μ_{8}(5) \leq 27876$. Our method generalizes the approach by the $3^{\text{rd}}$ author for the construction of a quintic threefold with 130 nodes in an earlier paper.

Frobenius polynomials for Calabi-Yau equations

We describe a variation of Dworks unit-root method to determine the degree four Frobenius polynomial for members of a 1-modulus Calabi-Yau family over $\mathbb{P}^1$ in terms of the holomorphic period near a point of maximal unipotent monodromy. The method is illustrated on a couple of examples.

Smoothing of Quiver Varieties

We show that Gorenstein singularities that are cones over singular Fano varieties provided by so-called flag quivers are smoothable in codimension three. Moreover, we give a precise characterization about the smoothability in codimension three of the Fano variety itself.

Real Line Arrangements and Surfaces with Many Real Nodes

A long standing question is if maximum number $μ(d)$ of nodes on a surface of degree $d$ in $\dP^3(\dC)$ can be achieved by a surface defined over the reals which has only real singularities. The currently best known asymptotic lower bound, $μ(d) \gtrapprox {5/12}d^3$, is provided by Chmutov's construction from 1992 which gives surfaces whose nodes have non-real coordinates. Using explicit constructions of certain real line arrangements we show that Chmutov's construction can be adapted to give only real singularities. All currently best known constructions which exceed Chmutov's lower bound (i.e., for $d=3,4,...,8,10,12$) can also be realized with only real singularities. Thus, our result shows that, up to now, all known lower bounds can be attained with only real singularities. We conclude with an application of the theory of real line arrangements which shows that our arrangements are aymptotically the best possible ones. This proves a special case of a conjecture of Chmutov.

Monodromy calculatons of fourth order equations of Calabi-Yau type

This paper contains a preliminary study of the monodromy of certain fourth order differential equations, that were called of Calabi-Yau type in math.NT/0402386. Some of these equations can be interpreted as the Picard-Fuchs equations of a Calabi-Yau manifold with one complex modulus, which links up the observed integrality to the conjectured integrality of the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. A natural question is if in the other cases such a geometrical interpretation is also possible. Our investigations of the monodromies are intended as a first step in answering this question. We use a numerical approach combined with some ideas from homological mirror symmetry to determine the monodromy for some further one-parameter models. Furthermore, we present a conjectural identification of the Picard-Fuchs equation for 5 new examples from Borcea's list and one constructed by Tonoli and conjecture the existence of some new Calabi-Yau three folds. The paper does not contain any theorems or proofs but is, we think, nevertheless of interest.

Rigid and Complete Intersection Lagrangian Singularities

In this article we prove a rigidity theorem for lagrangian singularities by studying the local cohomology of the lagrangian de Rham complex that was introduced in math.AG/0002083. The result can be applied to show the rigidity of all open swallowtails of dimension greater or equal than two. In the case of lagrangian complete intersection singularities the lagrangian de Rham complex turns out to be perverse. We also show that lagrangian complete intersection in dimension greater than two cannot be regular in codimension one.

Infinitesimal deformations of double covers of smooth algebraic varieties

The goal of this paper is to give a method to compute the space of infinitesimal deformations of a double cover of a smooth algebraic variety. The space of all infinitesimal deformations has a representation as a direct sum of two subspaces. One is isomorphic to the space of simultaneous deformations of the branch locus and the base of the double covering. The second summand is the subspace of deformations of the double covering which induce trivial deformations of the branch divisor. The main result of the paper is a description of the effect of imposing singularities in the branch locus. As a special case we study deformations of Calabi--Yau threefolds which are non--singular models of double cover of the projective 3--space branched along an octic surface. We show that in that case the number of deformations can be computed explicitly using computer algebra systems. This gives a method to compute the Hodge numbers of these Calabi--Yau manifolds. In this case the transverse deformations are resolutions of deformations of double covers of projective space but not double covers of a blow--up of projective space. In the paper we gave many explicit examples.

Deformation of singular lagrangian subvarieties

We investigate deformations of lagrangian manifolds with singularities. We introduce a complex similar to the de Rham-complex whose cohomology calculates deformation spaces. Examples of singular lagrangian varieties are presented and deformations are calculated explicitly.

The polyhedral Hodge number h^21 and vanishing of obstructions

We prove a vanishing theorem for the Hodge number h^21 of projective toric varieties provided by a certain class of polytopes. We explain how this Hodge number also gives information about the deformation theory of the toric Gorenstein singularity derived from the same polytope. In particular, the vanishing theorem for h^21 implies that these deformations are unobstructed.

Mirror Symmetry and Toric Degenerations of Partial Flag Manifolds

In this paper we propose and discuss a mirror construction for complete intersections in partial flag manifolds $F(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$. This construction includes our previous mirror construction for complete intersection in Grassmannians and the mirror construction of Givental for complete flag manifolds. The key idea of our construction is a degeneration of $F(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ to a certain Gorenstein toric Fano variety $P(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ which has been investigated by Gonciulea and Lakshmibai. We describe a natural small crepant desingularization of $P(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ and prove a generalized version of a conjecture of Gonciulea and Lakshmibai on the singular locus of $P(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$.

Conifold Transitions and Mirror Symmetry for Calabi-Yau Complete Intersections in Grassmannians

In this paper we show that conifold transitions between Calabi-Yau 3-folds can be used for the construction of mirror manifolds and for the computation of the instanton numbers of rational curves on complete intersection Calabi-Yau 3-folds in Grassmannians. Using a natural degeneration of Grassmannians $G(k,n)$ to some Gorenstein toric Fano varieties $P(k,n)$ with conifolds singularities which was recently described by Sturmfels, we suggest an explicit mirror construction for Calabi-Yau complete intersections $X \subset G(k,n)$ of arbitrary dimension. Our mirror construction is consistent with the formula for the Lax operator conjectured by Eguchi, Hori and Xiong for gravitational quantum cohomology of Grassmannians.

Euler number of the compactified Jacobian and multiplicity of rational curves

We show that the Euler number of the compactified Jacobian of a rational curve $C$ with locally planar singularities is equal to the multiplicity of the $δ$-constant stratum in the base of a semi-universal deformation of $C$. In particular, the multiplicity assigned by Yau, Zaslow and Beauville to a rational curve on a K3 surface $S$ coincides with the multiplicity of the normalisation map in the moduli space of stable maps to $S$.
