Virtual work, thermodynamic structure of the spacetime, and black hole criticality

We propose a new way to relate the black hole thermodynamics and geometry by generalizing the Euclidean formalism to include "virtual geometries", which do not necessarily satisfy Einstein equations. This provides a physically well motivated route to study black hole criticality and obtain the Landau Ginzburg potential. We compute the "virtual thermodynamic potential" and show that it satisfies a modified quantum statistical relation that is compatible with the first law of black hole thermodynamics supplemented with an extra term, interpreted as virtual work in previous literature. The novelty is that, within our formalism, we can explicitly compute this term as the first derivative of the virtual thermodynamic potential with respect to the horizon radius that is considered as the order parameter. Imposing the physical condition that the first derivative vanishes is at the basis of the matching between the first law of black hole thermodynamics and (one of the) Einstein equations evaluated at the horizon. Interestingly, imposing the physical conditions that the second and third derivatives vanish, we can concretely study the criticality and existence of swallow tails. As a specific example, we apply this formalism to an exact four dimensional asymptotically flat hairy black hole, namely the generalized Kaluza Klein (KK) black hole when the dilaton potential is included, and show that it is thermodynamically stable and has a non-trivial critical behaviour corresponding to an inverted swallowtail.

Phase Transitions and Black Hole Stability in Gauged N = 8 Supergravity

It is well known that there is a region of parameter space where all purely electric, static, dilatonic black holes are unstable within the STU models of maximal supergravity. We show that, for planar black holes, it is possible to complete the thermal phase space with AdS solitons, in such a way that the instability of the black holes signals the onset of confinement in the dual field theory. The analysis is done for the $D=4$ STU model of maximal gauged supergravity which naturally uplift to M-theory on the $S^7$.

Thermal superpotential and thermodynamics of neutral hairy black holes in extended SUGRA

We present a family of exact neutral hairy black-hole solutions with spherical horizon topology in extended supergravity with Fayet--Iliopoulos terms. We consider a consistent dilaton truncation and analyze in detail a sector where the magnetic part of the FI terms vanishes. Using appropriate dilaton counterterms, we compute the thermodynamic quantities and show the existence of Hawking--Page phase transitions. As a holographic application, we derive the thermal superpotential in closed form and use it as a counterterm, explicitly demonstrating that no additional finite counterterms are required to regularize the Euclidean action and the quasi-local stress tensor. The dual stress tensor matches that of a thermal gas of massless particles and is consistent with mixed dilaton boundary conditions that preserve conformal symmetry.

(Quasi-)normal modes of rotating black holes and new solitons in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet

In this paper, we analyze the scalar field (quasi-)normal modes of recently derived rotating black holes within the framework of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory at the Chern-Simons point in five dimensions. We also examine the mode spectrum of these probes on new static gravitational solitons. These solitons, featuring a regular center, are constructed from static black holes with gravitational hair via a double analytic continuation. By imposing ingoing boundary conditions at the horizons of rotating black holes, ensuring regularity at the soliton centers, and imposing Dirichlet boundary conditions at infinity, we obtain numerical spectra for the rotating black holes and solitons. For static black holes, we demonstrate analytically that the imaginary part of the mode frequencies is negative. Our analysis of the massless Klein-Gordon equation on five-dimensional geometries reveals an infinite family of gaped, massive three-dimensional Klein-Gordon fields, despite the presence of a non-compact extended direction. For the static solitons, the frequencies are real and non-equispaced, whereas in the rotating black holes, counter-rotating modes are absorbed more quickly, and the imaginary part of the co-rotating modes approaches zero as extremality is approached. Additionally, we show that both the rotating black holes and solitons can be equipped with non-trivial torsion, leading to a novel branch of solutions.

On the existence of thermodynamically stable asymptotically flat black holes

We use the quasilocal formalism of Brown and York, supplemented with counterterms, to investigate the thermodynamics of asymptotically flat black holes. We consider two families of exact regular black hole solutions, which are thermodynamically stable. The first one consists of four-dimensional static charged hairy black holes in extended supergravity. The second family consists of five-dimensional static charged black holes in Gauss-Bonnet (GB) gravity. Despite the fact that their characteristics are completely different, we found a striking similarity between their thermodynamic behaviour.

Rotating and accelerating AdS black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

We present new, exact, rotating and accelerating solutions within the framework of five-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory at the Chern-Simons point. The rotating solutions describe black holes characterized by a single rotation parameter, a mass parameter, and two extra integration constants that can be interpreted as hairs of a gravitational nature. It is noteworthy that the rotation cannot be removed by a large diffeomorphism. We also extend our procedure to dimension seven, providing a new rotating black hole solution with two rotation parameters pertaining to cubic Lovelock theory with a unique vacuum.

Extended phase space thermodynamics for hairy black holes

We expand our results in \cite{Astefanesei:2019ehu} to investigate a general class of exact hairy black hole solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity. The dilaton is endowed with a potential that originates from an electromagnetic Fayet-Iliopoulos term in $\mathcal{N} = 2$ extended supergravity in four spacetime dimensions. We present the usual thermodynamics by using the counterterm method supplemented with boundary terms for a scalar field with mixed boundary conditions. We then extend our analysis by considering a dynamical cosmological constant and verify the isoperimetric inequality. We obtain a very rich phase diagram and criticality in both the canonical and grand canonical ensembles. Within string theory, the cosmological constant is related to the radius of the external sphere (of the compactification) and can be interpreted as a modulus. In this context, the existence of a critical value hints to the fact that the thermodynamic properties of black holes in lower dimensions depend on the size of the compactification.

Einstein-scalar field solutions in AdS spacetime: clouds, boundary conditions, and scalar multipoles

We consider an Einstein-scalar field model which is a consistent truncation of ${\cal N}=8$ $D=4$ gauged supergravity, the scalar field possessing a potential which is unbounded from below and a tachyonic mass above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. We investigate the spherically symmetric asymptotically anti-de Sitter soliton and black hole solutions, with the aim of clarifying the asymptotics and the possible boundary conditions at infinity. The emerging picture is contrasted with that found for an Einstein-scalar field model with the same scalar mass and a quartic self-interaction term. We also provide arguments for the existence of solitonic solutions which can be viewed as non-linear continuation of the (probe) scalar multipolar clouds, with emphasis on the dipole case. Apart from numerical results, exact solutions are found for solitons with a monopole and dipole scalar field, as perturbations around the AdS background.

Reentrant phase transitions in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar black holes

We consider how scalar fields affect the thermodynamic behavior of charged anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes. We specifically investigate a class of (3+1)-dimensional exact hairy charged AdS black hole solutions to Einstein-Maxwell-scalar gravity, whose stable ground state and finite horizon area in the zero temperature limit make it of particular interest. We find that the reverse isoperimetric inequality is satisfied for this class and that there exists an intermediate range of the charge that admits reentrant phase behavior, the first example of this type of phase behavior in (3+1) dimensions in a consistent theory.

Holography of AdS Hairy Black Holes and Cardy-Verlinde Formula

We discuss some aspects related to holography of Anti-de Sitter (AdS) dyonic hairy black holes, which break the conformal symetry of the boundary. We use counterterms for the scalar field that satisfies mixed boundary conditions to compute the Euclidean action and dual stress tensor. We apply these results to show that the Cardy-Verlinde formula is not satisfied. However, when the magnetic (or electric) charge vanishes, the conformal symmetry is preserved and the entropy of the black hole can be put in the Cardy-Verlinde form. In our analysis, there is no need of adding extra finite counterterms and, in this particular case, we explicitly show that our results match the ones obtained from using the superpotential as a counterterm.

Instability of supersymmetric black holes via quantum phase transitions

In this paper we prove that the four-dimensional hyperbolic supersymmetric black holes can be unstable in the canonical ensemble. To this end, we work with an infinite class of $\,\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity theories interpolating between all the single dilaton truncations of the $\mathrm{SO}(8)$ gauged $\,\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity. Within these models, we study electrically charged solutions of two different kinds: supersymmetric hairy and extremal non-supersymmetric Reissner-Nordström black holes. We consider these solutions within the same canonical ensemble and show that, for suitable choices of the parameters defining the $\,\mathcal{N}=2$ model, the supersymmetric solution features a higher free energy than the non-supersymmetric one. In the absence of additional selection rules, this would imply an instability of the supersymmetric configuration, hinting towards a possible supersymmetry breaking mechanism.

New non-extremal and BPS hairy black holes in gauged $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity

In this article we study a family of four-dimensional, $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity theories that interpolates between all the single dilaton truncations of the $\mathrm{SO}(8)$ gauged $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity. In this infinitely many theories characterized by two real numbers -- the interpolation parameter and the dyonic "angle" of the gauging -- we construct non-extremal electrically or magnetically charged black hole solutions and their supersymmetric limits. All the supersymmetric black holes have non-singular horizons with spherical, hyperbolic or planar topology. Some of these supersymmetric and non-extremal black holes are new examples in the $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory that do not belong to the STU model. We compute the asymptotic charges, thermodynamics and boundary conditions of these black holes and show that all of them, except one, introduce a triple trace deformation in the dual theory.

Exact holographic RG flows in extended SUGRA

We present a family of exact planar hairy neutral black hole solutions in extended supergravity with Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms. We consider a model where the magnetic part of FI sector vanishes and obtain the superpotential at finite temperature in analytic form. Then, we discuss the thermodynamics and some holographic properties of these solutions. We regularize the action by two different methods, one with gravitational and scalar counterterms and the other using the thermal superpotential as a counterterm, and compute the holographic stress tensor. We also construct the $c$-function of the corresponding RG flow and obtain an exact holographic $β$-function for this model.

Thermodynamically stable asymptotically flat hairy black holes with a dilaton potential: the general case

We extend the analysis, initiated in arXiv:1901.01269, of the thermodynamic stability of four-dimensional asymptotically flat hairy black holes by considering a general class of exact solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with a non-trivial dilaton potential. We find that, regardless of the values of the parameters of the theory, there always exists a sub-class of hairy black holes that are thermodynamically stable and have the extremal limit well defined. This generic feature that makes the equilibrium configurations locally stable should be related to the properties of the dilaton potential that is decaying towards the spatial infinity, but behaves as a box close to the horizon. We prove that these thermodynamically stable solutions are also dynamically stable under spherically symmetric perturbations.

Higher dimensional black hole scalarization

In the simplest scalar-tensor theories, wherein the scalar field is non-minimally coupled to the Ricci scalar, spontaneous scalarization of electrovacuum black holes (BHs) does not occur. This ceases to be true in higher dimensional spacetimes, $d>4$. We consider the scalarization of the higher dimensional Reissner-Nordström BHs in scalar-tensor models and provide results on the zero modes for different $d$, together with an explicit construction of the scalarized BHs in $d=5$, discussing some of their properties. We also observe that a conformal transformation into the Einstein frame maps this model into an Einstein-Maxwel-scalar model, wherein the non-minimal coupling occurs between the scalar field and the Maxwell invariant (rather than the Ricci scalar), thus relating the occurence of scalarization in the two models. Next, we consider the spontaneous scalarization of the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini BH in extended-scalar-tensor-Lovelock gravity in even dimensions. In these models, the scalar field is non-minimally coupled to the $(d/2)^{th}$ Euler density, in $d$ spacetime dimensions. We construct explicitly examples in $d=6,8$, showing the properties of the four dimensional case are qualitatively generic, but with quantitative differences. We compare these higher $d$ scalarized BHs with the hairy BHs in shift-symmetric Horndeski theory, for the same $d$, which we also construct.

Phase transitions of neutral planar hairy AdS black holes

We investigate the phase diagram of a general class of $4$-dimensional exact regular hairy planar black holes. For some particular values of the parameters in the moduli potential, these solutions can be embedded in $ω$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=8$ gauged supergravity. We construct the hairy soliton that is the ground state of the theory and show that there exist first order phase transitions.

Dynamically and thermodynamically stable black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity

We consider Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity with the non-minimal exponential coupling between the dilaton and the Maxwell field emerging from low energy heterotic string theory. The dilaton is endowed with a potential that originates from an electromagnetic Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term in $\mathcal{N}=2$ extended supergravity in four spacetime dimensions. For the case we are interested in, this potential introduces a single parameter $α$. When $α\rightarrow 0$, the static black holes (BHs) of the model are the Gibbons-Maeda-Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger (GMGHS) solutions. When $α\rightarrow \infty$, the BHs become the standard Reissner-Nordström (RN) solutions of electrovacuum General Relativity. The BH solutions for finite non-zero $α$ interpolate between these two families. In this case, the dilaton potential regularizes the extremal limit of the GMGHS solution yielding a set of zero temperature BHs with a near horizon $AdS_2\times S^2$ geometry. We show that, in the neighborhood of these extremal solutions, there is a subset of BHs that are dynamically and thermodynamically stable, all of which have charge to mass ratio larger than unity. By dynamical stability we mean that no growing quasi-normal modes are found; thus they are stable against linear perturbations (spherical and non-spherical). Moreover, non-linear numerical evolutions lend support to their non-linear stability. By thermodynamical stability we mean the BHs are stable both in the canonical and grand-canonical ensemble. In particular, both the specific heat at constant charge and the isothermal permittivity are positive. This is not possible for RN and GMGHS BHs. We discuss the different thermodynamical phases for the BHs in this model and comment on what may allow the existence of both dynamically and thermodynamically stable BHs.

Hairy Black Hole Chemistry

We study the thermodynamics of an exact hairy black hole solution in Anti-deSitter (AdS) spacetime. We use the counterterm method supplemented with boundary terms for the scalar field to obtain the thermodynamic quantities and stress tensor of the dual field theory. We then extend our analysis by considering a dynamical cosmological constant and verify the isoperimetric inequality. Unlike the thermodynamics of Reissner-Nördstrom (RN) black hole in this `extended' framework, the presence of the scalar field and its self-interaction make also the criticality possible in the grand canonical ensemble. In the canonical ensemble, we prove that, in fact, there exist two critical points. Finally we comment on a different possible interpretation that is more natural in the context of string theory.
