Nearly Gorenstein and almost symmetric properties in shifted numerical semigroups

Given the integers $0 0$. For sufficiently large $n$, we prove that if $M_n$ is nearly Gorenstein or almost symmetric, then so is $M_{n+r_k}$. A key ingredient is to relate the pseudo-Frobenius elements of $M_n$ and $M_{n+r_k}$, correcting a wrong claim in the literature. Moreover, we derive explicit formulas for the Frobenius and pseudo-Frobenius numbers of $M_{n+r_k}$.

Numerical semigroup tree: type-representation

In this paper, we introduce a new depicting of the so-called numerical semigroup tree $\mathcal T$. By exploring computationally this improved picture, relying on the type notion of a semigroup, we found that the number of semigroups of genus $g$ and type $t$ is constante when $t$ is close to $g$ while $g$ grows. We also study the unimodality of various sequences as well as the behavior of the leaves in $\mathcal T$. We put forward several conjectures that are supported by various computational experiments.

The toric ring of one dimensional simplicial complexes

Let $Δ$ be a 1-dimensional simplicial complex. Then $Δ$ may be identified with a finite simple graph $G$. In this article, we investigate the toric ring $R_G$ of $G$. All graphs $G$ such that $R_G$ is a normal domain are classified. For such a graph, we determine the set $\mathcal{P}_G$ of height one monomial prime ideals of $R_G$. In the bipartite case, and in the case of whiskered cycles, this set is explicitly described. As a consequence, we determine the canonical class $[ω_{R_G}]$ and characterize the Gorenstein property of $R_G$. For a bipartite graph $G$, we show that $R_G$ is Gorenstein if and only if $G$ is unmixed. For a subclass of non-bipartite graphs $G$, which includes whiskered cycles, $R_G$ is Gorenstein if and only if $G$ is unmixed and has an odd number of vertices. Finally, it is proved that $R_G$ is a pseudo-Gorenstein ring if $G$ is an odd cycle.

The canonical trace of determinantal rings

We compute the canonical trace of generic determinantal rings and provide a sufficient condition for the trace to specialize. As an application we determine the canonical trace $\mbox{tr}(ω_R)$ of a Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$ of codimension two, which is generically Gorenstein. It is shown that if the defining ideal $I$ of $R$ is generated by $n$ elements, then $\mbox{tr}(ω_R)$ is generated by the $(n-2)$-minors of the Hilbert-Burch matrix of $I$.

Stable set rings which are Gorenstein on the punctured spectrum

The non-Gorenstein locus of stable set rings of finite simple perfect graphs is studied. We describe combinatorially those perfect graphs whose stable set rings are Gorenstein on the punctured spectrum. In addition, we show that, in general, for Cohen--Macaulay graded algebras, their Cohen--Macaulay type and residue are largely independent.

The tiny trace ideals of the canonical modules in Cohen-Macaulay rings of dimension one

We study one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay rings whose trace ideal of the canonical module is as small as possible. In this paper we call such rings far-flung Gorenstein rings. We investigate far-flung Gorenstein rings in relation with the endomorphism algebras of the maximal ideals and numerical semigroup rings. We show that the solution of the Rohrbach problem in additive number theory provides an upper bound for the multiplicity of far-flung Gorenstein numerical semigroup rings. Reflexive modules over far-flung Gorenstein rings are also studied.

Gröbner-nice pairs of ideals

We introduce the concept of a Gröbner nice pair of ideals in a polynomial ring and we present some applications.

Graded Bourbaki ideals of graded modules

In this paper we study graded Bourbaki ideals. It is a well-known fact that for torsionfree modules over Noetherian normal domains, Bourbaki sequences exist. We give criteria in terms of certain attached matrices for a homomorphism of modules to induce a Bourbaki sequence. Special attention is given to graded Bourbaki sequences. In the second part of the paper, we apply these results to the Koszul cycles of the residue class field and determine particular Bourbaki ideals explicitly. We also obtain in a special case the relationship between the structure of the Rees algebra of a Koszul cycle and the Rees algebra of its Bourbaki ideal.

Ulrich elements in normal simplicial affine semigroups

Let $H\subseteq \mathbb{N}^d$ be a normal affine semigroup, $R=K[H]$ its semigroup ring over the field $K$ and $ω_R$ its canonical module. The Ulrich elements for $H$ are those $h$ in $H$ such that for the multiplication map by $\mathbf{x}^h$ from $R$ into $ω_R$, the cokernel is an Ulrich module. We say that the ring $R$ is almost Gorenstein if Ulrich elements exist in $H$. For the class of slim semigroups that we introduce, we provide an algebraic criterion for testing the Ulrich propery. When $d=2$, all normal affine semigroups are slim. Here we have a simpler combinatorial description of the Ulrich property. We improve this result for testing the elements in $H$ which are closest to zero. In particular, we give a simple arithmetic criterion for when is $(1,1)$ an Ulrich element in $H$.

Canonical trace ideal and residue for numerical semigroup rings

For a numerical semigroup ring $K[H]$ we study the trace of its canonical ideal. The colength of this ideal is called the residue of $H$. This invariant measures how far is $H$ from being symmetric, i.e. $K[H]$ from being a Gorenstein ring. We remark that the canonical trace ideal contains the conductor ideal, and we study bounds for the residue. For $3$-generated numerical semigroups we give explicit formulas for the canonical trace ideal and the residue of $H$. Thus, in this setting we can classify those whose residue is at most one (the nearly-Gorenstein ones), and we show the eventual periodic behaviour of the residue in a shifted family.

The trace of the canonical module

The trace of the canonical module (the canonical trace) determines the non-Gorenstein locus of a local Cohen--Macaulay ring. We call a local Cohen--Macaulay ring nearly Gorenstein, if its canonical trace contains the maximal ideal. Similar definitions can be made for positively graded Cohen--Macaulay $K$-algebras. We study the canonical trace for tensor products and Segre products of algebras, as well as of (squarefree) Veronese subalgebras. The results are used to classify the nearly Gorenstein Hibi rings. We study connections between the class of nearly Gorenstein rings and that of almost Gorenstein rings. We show that in dimension one, the former class includes the latter.

Quadratic numerical semigroups and the Koszul property

Let $H$ be a numerical semigroup. We give effective bounds for the multiplicity $e(H)$ when the associated graded ring $\operatorname{gr}_\mathfrak{m} K[H]$ is defined by quadrics. We classify Koszul complete intersection semigroups in terms of gluings. Furthermore, for several classes of numerical semigroups considered in the literature (arithmetic, compound, special almost complete intersections, $3$-semigroups, symmetric or pseudo-symmetric $4$-semigroups) we classify those which are Koszul.

On the Cohen-Macaulay property for quadratic tangent cones

Let $H$ be an $n$-generated numerical semigroup such that its tangent cone $\operatorname{gr}_\mathfrak{m} K[H]$ is defined by quadratic relations. We show that if $n<5$ then $\operatorname{gr}_\mathfrak{m} K[H]$ is Cohen-Macaulay, and for $n=5$ we explicitly describe the semigroups $H$ such that $\operatorname{gr}_\mathfrak{m} K[H]$ is not Cohen-Macaulay. As an application we show that if the field $K$ is algebraically closed and of characteristic different from two, and $n\leq 5$ then $\operatorname{gr}_\mathfrak{m} K[H]$ is Koszul if and only if (possibly after a change of coordinates) its defining ideal has a quadratic Gröbner basis.

On the defining equations of the tangent cone of a numerical semigroup ring

Let $\mathbf{a} = a_1 <\dots < a_r$ be a sequence of positive integers, and let $H_{\mathbf{a}}$ denote the semigroup generated by $a_1, \dots, a_r$. For an integer $k\geq 0$ we denote by $\mathbf{a}+k$ the shifted sequence $a_1 +k, \dots, a_r +k$. Fix a field $K$. We show that for all $k \gg 0$ the associated graded ring of the semigroup ring $K[H_{\mathbf{a}+k}]$ is Cohen--Macaulay and that it has the same Betti numbers as $K[H_{\mathbf{a}+k}]$ itself. As a consequence, we show that the number of defining equations of the tangent cone of a numerical semigroup ring is bounded by a value depending only on the width of the semigroup, where the width of a numerical semigroup is defined to be the difference of the largest and the smallest element in the minimal generating set of the semigroup. We also provide a conjectured upper bound of the above number of equations and we verify it in some cases.
