The classification of CR maps from hyperquadrics into tubes over null cones of symmetric forms

We classify CR maps from the hyperquadric of signature $l>0$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$, $n\geq 3$, to the local model for the tube over the null cone of a symmetric form in $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$, up to CR automorphisms of the source and target. In contrast to the setting of the Heisenberg hypersurface in $\mathbb{C}^3$ (i.e., the case $l=0$), studied earlier in Reiter--Son [27], our analysis uncovers two new equivalence classes of CR maps of geometric rank one and one new class of geometric rank two in the case $n=3$. In the case $n\geq 4$, we establish that all maps extend to local isometries of certain indefinite Kähler metrics. We further derive a classification of (local) proper holomorphic maps from the generalized unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n_l$ into a generalized version of the Lie ball $D^{\mathrm{IV}}_{m,l}$ (the generalized classical domain of type~IV).

On a nonhomogeneous heat equation on the complex plane

In this article, we investigate the existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic behaviors of mild solutions of a parabolic evolution equations on complex plane, in which the diffusion operator has the form \(\overline{\Box}_φ = \overline{D}\, \overline{D}^{\ast}\), where \(\overline{D} f = \bar{\partial}f + φ_{\bar{z}} f\), the function \(φ\) is smooth and subharmonic on \(\mathbb{C}\), and \(\overline{D}^{\ast}\) is the formal adjoint of \(\overline{D}\). Our method combines certain estimates of heat kernel associating with the homogeneous linear equation of Raich \cite{raich06} and a fixed point argument.

On CR maps from the sphere into the tube over the future light cone II: Higher dimensions

We determine all CR maps from the sphere in $\mathbb{C}^3$ into the tube over the future light cone in $\mathbb{C}^4$. This result leads to a complete characterization of proper holomorphic maps from the three-dimensional unit ball into the classical domain of type IV of four dimension and confirms a conjecture of Reiter - Son in [26] from 2022. Additionally, we prove a boundary characterization of isometric holomorphic embeddings from a ball into a classical domain of type IV in arbitrary dimensions that is similar to the main result in Huang - Lu - Tang - Xiao [16]. The result is then used to treat a special case in the general characterization.

On CR maps between hyperquadrics and Winkelmann hypersurfaces

In this paper, we study CR maps between hyperquadrics and Winkelmann hypersurfaces. Based on a previous study on the CR Ahlfors derivative of Lamel-Son and a recent result of Huang-Lu-Tang-Xiao on CR maps between hyperquadrics, we prove that a transversal CR map from a hyperquadric into a hyperquadric or a Winkelmann hypersurface extends to a local holomorphic isometric embedding with respect to certain Kähler metrics if and only if the Hermitian part of its CR Ahlfors derivative vanishes on an open set of the source. Our proof is based on relating the geometric rank of a CR map into a hyperquadric and its CR Ahlfors derivative.

On highly degenerate CR maps of spheres

For $N \geq 4$ we classify the $(N-3)$-degenerate smooth CR maps of the three-dimensional unit sphere into the $(2N-1)$-dimensional unit sphere. Each of these maps has image being contained in a five-dimensional complex-linear space and is of degree at most two, or equivalent to one of the four maps into the five-dimensional sphere classified by Faran. As a byproduct of our classification we obtain new examples of rational maps of degree three which are $(N-3)$-degenerate only along a proper real subvariety and are not equivalent to polynomial maps. In particular, by changing the base point, it is possible to construct new families of nondegenerate maps.

Eigenvalues of the Kohn Laplacian and deformations of pseudohermitian structures on CR manifolds

We study the eigenvalues of the Kohn Laplacian on a closed embedded strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold as functionals on the set of positive oriented pseudohermitian structures $\mathcal{P}_{+}$. We show that the functionals are continuous with respect to a natural topology on $\mathcal{P}_{+}$. Using an adaptation of the standard Kato--Rellich perturbation theory, we prove that the functionals are (one-sided) differentiable along 1-parameter analytic deformations. We use this differentiability to define the notion of critical pseudohermitian structures, in a generalized sense, for them. We give a necessary (also sufficient in some situations) condition for a pseudohermitian structure to be critical. Finally, we present explicit examples of critical pseudohermitian structures on both homogeneous and non-homogeneous CR manifolds.

The CR umbilical locus of a real ellipsoid in $\mathbb{C}^2$

This paper concerns the CR umbilical locus of a real ellipsoid in $\mathbb{C}^2$, the set of points at which the ellipsoid can be osculated by a biholomorphic image of the sphere up to 6th order. Huang and Ji proved that this locus is non-empty. Ebenfelt and Zaitsev proved that, for ellipsoids that are sufficiently "closed" to the sphere, the locus actually contains a "stable" curve of umbilical points. Foo, Merker and Ta later provided an explicit curve that is contained in it. The main result in this paper exhibits that the umbilical locus is the union of the curves mentioned above and a non-trivial real variety which is defined by two homogeneous real sextic equations of four real variables. When there are suitable pairs of equal semi-axes, one of them factors allowing us to determine the locus explicitly.

An upper bound for the first positive eigenvalue of the Kohn Laplacian on Reinhardt real hypersurfaces

A real hypersurface in $\mathbb{C}^2$ is said to be Reinhardt if it is invariant under the standard $\mathbb{T}^2$-action on $\mathbb{C}^2$. Its CR geometry can be described in terms of the curvature function of its ``generating curve'', i.e., the logarithmic image of the hypersurface in the plane $\mathbb{R}^2$. We give a sharp upper bound for the first positive eigenvalue of the Kohn Laplacian associated to a natural pseudohermitian structure on a compact and strictly pseudoconvex Reinhardt real hypersurface having closed generating curve (which amounts to the $\mathbb{T}^2$-action being free). Our bound is expressed in terms of the $L^2$-norm of the curvature function of the generating curve and is attained if and only if the curve is a circle.

On CR maps from the sphere into the tube over the future light cone

We determine all local smooth or formal CR maps from the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^3\subset \mathbb{C}^2$ into the tube $\mathcal{T}:= \mathcal{C} \times i\mathbb{R}^3 \subset \mathbb{C}^3$ over the future light cone $\mathcal{C}:= \left\{x\in \mathbb{R}^3\colon x_1^2+x_2^2 = x_3^2, \ x_3 > 0\right\}$. This result leads to a complete classification of proper holomorphic maps from the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^2$ into Cartan's classical domain of type IV in $\mathbb{C}^3$ that extend smoothly to some boundary point. Up to composing with CR automorphisms of the source and target, the classification consists of four algebraic maps. Two maps among them were known earlier in the literature, which were shown to be ``rigid'' in the higher dimensional case in a recent paper by Xiao and Yuan. Two newly discovered quadratic polynomial maps provide counterexamples to a conjecture appeared in the same paper for the case of dimension two.

The holomorphic sectional curvature and "convex" real hypersurfaces in Kähler manifolds

We prove a sharp lower bound for the Tanaka-Webster holomorphic sectional curvature of strictly pseudoconvex real hypersurfaces that are "semi-isometrically" immersed in a Kähler manifold of nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature under an appropriate convexity condition. This gives a partial answer to a question posed by Chanillo, Chiu, and Yang regarding the positivity of the Tanaka-Webster scalar curvature of the boundary of a strictly convex domain in $\mathbb{C}^2$ from 2012. In fact, the main result proves a stronger positivity property, namely the $\frac12$-positivity in the sense of Cao, Chang, and Chen, for compact "convex" real hypersurfaces in a Kähler manifold of nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature. Our approach is rather simple and uses a version of the Gauss equation for semi-isometric CR immersions of pseudohermitian manifolds into Kähler manifolds.

The $\partial$-complex on weighted Bergman spaces on Hermitian manifolds

In this paper, we investigate the $\partial$-complex on weighted Bergman spaces on Hermitian manifolds satisfying a certain holomorphicity/duality condition. This generalizes the situation of the Segal-Bargmann space in $\mathbb{C}^n$, studied earlier by the first-named author, in which the adjoint of the differentiation is the multiplication by $z$. The results are applied to two important examples in the unit ball, namely, the complex hyperbolic metric and a conformally Kähler metric which are related to Bergman spaces with so-called "exponential" and "standard" weights, respectively. In particular, we obtain new estimates for the solutions of the $\partial$-equation on these weighted Bergman spaces.

The CR Ahlfors derivative and a new invariant for spherically equivalent CR maps

We study a CR analogue of the Ahlfors derivative for conformal immersions of Stowe [23] that generalizes the CR Schwarzian derivative studied earlier by the second-named author [21]. This notion possesses several important properties similar to those of the conformal counterpart and provides a new invariant for spherically equivalent CR maps from strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds into a sphere. The invariant is computable and distinguishes many well-known sphere maps. In particular, it vanishes precisely when the map is spherically equivalent to the linear embedding of spheres.

The $\partial$-Operator and Real Holomorphic Vector Fields

Let $(M,h)$ be a Hermitian manifold and $ψ$ a smooth weight function on $M$. The $\partial$-complex on weighted Bergman spaces $A^2_{(p,0)}(M,h, e^{-ψ})$ of holomorphic $(p,0)$-forms was recently studied in [[10] and [9]. It was shown that if $h$ is Kähler and a suitable density condition holds, the $\partial$-complex exhibits an interesting holomorphicity/duality property when $(\bar\partialψ)^{\sharp}$ is holomorphic (i.e., when the real gradient field $\mathrm{grad}_hψ$ is a real holomorphic vector field). For general Hermitian metrics this property does not hold without the holomorphicity of the torsion tensor $T_p{}^{rs}$. In this paper, we investigate the existence of real-valued weight functions with real holomorphic gradient fields on Kähler and conformally Kähler manifolds and their relationship to the $\partial$-complex on weighted Bergman spaces. For Kähler metrics with multi-radial potential functions on $\mathbb C^n$ we determine all multi-radial weight functions with real holomorphic gradient fields. For conformally Kähler metrics on complex space forms we first identify the metrics having holomorphic torsion leading to several interesting examples such as the Hopf manifold $\mathbb{S}^{2n-1} \times \mathbb{S}^1$, and the "half" hyperbolic metric on the unit ball. For some of these metrics, we further determine weight functions $ψ$ with real holomorphic gradient fields. They provide a wealth of triples $(M,h,e^{-ψ})$ of Hermitian non-Kähler manifolds with weights for which the $\partial$-complex exhibits the aforementioned holomorphicity/duality property. Among these examples, we study in detail the $\partial$-complex on the unit ball with the half hyperbolic metric and derive a new estimate for the $\partial$-equation.

On the Chern-Moser-Weyl tensor of real hypersurfaces

We derive an explicit formula for the well-known Chern-Moser-Weyl tensor for nondegenerate real hypersurfaces in complex space in terms of their defining functions. The formula is considerably simplified when applying to "pluriharmonic perturbations" of the sphere or to a Fefferman approximate solution to the complex Monge-Ampère equation. As an application, we show that the CR invariant one-form $X_α$ constructed recently by Case and Gover is nontrivial on each real ellipsoid of revolution in $\mathbb{C}^3$, unless it is equivalent to the sphere. This resolves affirmatively a question posed by these two authors in 2017 regarding the (non-) local CR invariance of the $\mathcal{I}'$-pseudohermitian invariant in dimension five and provides a counterexample to a recent conjecture by Hirachi.

Semi-isometric CR immersions of CR manifolds into Kähler manifolds and applications

We study the second fundamental form of semi-isometric CR immersions from strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds into Kähler manifolds. As an application, we give a precise condition for the CR umbilicality of real hypersurfaces, extending an well-known theorem by Webster on the nonexistence of CR umbilical points on generic real ellipsoids. As other applications, we extend the linearity theorem of Ji-Yuan for CR immersions into spheres with vanishing second fundamental form to the important case of three-dimensional manifolds, and prove the ``first gap'' theorem in the spirit of Webster, Faran, Cima-Suffridge, and Huang for semi-isometric CR immersions into a complex euclidean space of ``low'' codimension. Our new approach to the linearity theorem is based on the study of the first positive eigenvalue of the Kohn Laplacian.

CR-Analogue of Siu-$\partial\bar{\partial}$-formula and Applications to Rigidity problem for pseudo-Hermitian harmonic maps

We give several versions of Siu's $\partial\bar{\partial}$-formula for maps from a strictly pseudoconvex pseudo-Hermitian manifold $(M^{2m+1}, θ)$ into a Kähler manifold $(N^n, g)$. We also define and study the notion of pseudo-Hermitian harmonicity for maps from $M$ into $N$. In particular, we prove a CR version of Siu Rigidity Theorem for pseudo-Hermitian harmonic maps from a pseudo-Hermitian manifold with vanishing Webster torsion into a Kähler manifold having strongly negative curvature.

Exponential decay of Bergman kernels on complete Hermitian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below

Given a smooth positive measure $μ$ on a complete Hermitian manifold with Ricci curvature bounded from below, we prove a pointwise Agmon-type bound for the corresponding Bergman kernel, under rather general conditions involving the coercivity of an associated complex Laplacian on $(0,1)$-forms. Thanks to an appropriate version of the Bochner--Kodaira--Nakano basic identity, we can give explicit geometric sufficient conditions for such coercivity to hold. Our results extend several known bounds in the literature to the case in which the manifold is neither assumed to be Kähler nor of "bounded geometry". The key ingredients of our proof are a localization formula for the complex Laplacian (of the kind used in the theory of Schrödinger operators) and a mean value inequality for subsolutions of the heat equation on Riemannian manifolds due to Li, Schoen, and Tam. We also show in an appendix that the so-called "twisted basic identities" are standard basic identities with respect to conformally Kähler metrics.

The Webster scalar curvature and sharp upper and lower bounds for the first positive eigenvalue of the Kohn-Laplacian on real hypersurfaces

Let $(M,θ)$ be a compact strictly pseudoconvex pseudohermitian manifold which is CR embedded into a complex space. In an earlier paper, Lin and the authors gave several sharp upper bounds for the first positive eigenvalue $λ_1$ of the Kohn-Laplacian $\Box_b$ on $(M,θ)$. In the present paper, we give a sharp upper bound for $λ_1$, generalizing and extending some previous results. As a corollary, we obtain a Reilly-type estimate when $M$ is embedded into the standard sphere. In another direction, using a Lichnerowicz-type estimate by Chanillo, Chiu, and Yang and an explicit formula for the Webster scalar curvature, we give a lower bound for $λ_1$ when the pseudohermitian structure $θ$ is volume-normalized.
