Kinematic formulas for sets defined by differences of convex functions

Two of the authors have defined the class $ WDC(M)$ as the class of all subsets of a smooth manifold $M$ that may be expressed in local coordinates as certain sublevel sets of DC (differences of convex) functions. If $M$ is Riemanian and $G$ is a group of isometries acting transitively on the sphere bundle $SM$, we define the invariant curvature measures of compact \WDC~ subsets of $M$, and show that pairs of such subsets are subject to the array of kinematic formulas known to apply to smoother sets. Restricting to the case $(M, G) = (\mathbb R^d, \overline{SO(d)})$, this extends and subsumes Federer's theory of sets with positive reach in an essential way. The key technical point is equivalent to a sharpening of a classical theorem of Ewald, Larman, and Rogers characterizing the dimension of the set of directions of line segments lying in the boundary of a given convex body.

Scaling exponents of curvature measures

Fractal curvatures of a subset F of R^d are roughly defined as suitably rescaled limits of the total curvatures of its parallel sets F_e as e tends to 0 and have been studied in the last years in particular for self-similar and self-conformal sets. This previous work was focussed on establishing the existence of (averaged) fractal curvatures and related fractal curvature measures in the generic case when the k-th curvature measure C_k(F_e,.) scales like e^(k-D), where D ist the Minkowski dimension of F. In the present paper we study the nongeneric situation when the scaling exponents do not coincide with the dimension. We demonstrate that the possibilities for nongeneric behaviour are rather limited and introduce the notion of local flatness, which allows a geometric characterization of nongenericy in R and R^2. We expect local flatness to be characteristic also in higher dimensions. The results enlighten the geometric meaning of the scaling exponents.

On Removable Sets For Convex Functions

In the present article we provide a sufficient condition for a closed set F in R^d to have the following property which we call c-removability: Whenever a function f:R^d->R is locally convex on the complement of F, it is convex on the whole R^d. We also prove that no generalized rectangle of positive Lebesgue measure in R^2 is c-removable. Our results also answer the following question asked in an article by Jacek Tabor and Jozef Tabor [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 365 (2010)]: Assume the closed set F in R^d is such that any locally convex function defined on R^d\F has a unique convex extension on R^d. Is F necessarily intervally thin (a notion of smallness of sets defined by their "essential transparency" in every direction)? We prove the answer is negative by finding a counterexample in R^2.

Normal cycles and curvature measures of sets with d.c. boundary

We show that for every compact domain in a Euclidean space with d.c. (delta-convex) boundary there exists a unique Legendrian cycle such that the associated curvature measures fulfil a local version of the Gauss-Bonnet formula. This was known in dimensions two and three and was open in higher dimensions. In fact, we show this property for a larger class of sets including also lower-dimensional sets. We also describe the local index function of the Legendrian cycles and we show that the associated curvature measures fulfill the Crofton formula.

On critical values of self-similar sets

In the paper we study properties of the set of critical points for self-similar sets. We introduce simple condition that implies at most countably many critical values and we construct a self-similar set with uncountable set of critical values.
