Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya torque-driven resonance in antiferromagnetic {\alpha}-Fe2O3

We examine the high-frequency optical mode of {\alpha}-Fe2O3 and report that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction generates a new type of torque on the magnetic resonance. Using a continuous-wave terahertz interferometer, we measure the optical mode spectra, where the asymmetric absorption with a large amplitude and broad linewidth is observed near the magnetic transition point, Morin temperature (TM ~ 254.3 K). Based on the spin wave model, the spectral anomaly is attributed to the DM interaction-induced torque, enabling to extract the strength of DM interaction field of 4 T. Our work opens a new avenue to characterize the spin resonance behaviors at an antiferromagnetic singular point for next-generation and high-frequency spin-based information technologies.

EasyABM: a lightweight and easy to use heterogeneous agent-based modelling tool written in Julia

Agent based modelling is a computational approach that aims to understand the behaviour of complex systems through simplified interactions of programmable objects in computer memory called agents. Agent based models (ABMs) are predominantly used in fields of biology, ecology, social sciences and economics where the systems of interest often consist of several interacting entities. In this work, we present a Julia package EasyABM.jl for simplifying the process of studying agent based models. EasyABM.jl provides an intuitive and easy to understand functional approach for building and analysing agent based models.

Room temperature nonlinear Hall effect and wireless RF rectification in Weyl semimetal TaIrTe4

The nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE), which can produce a transverse voltage without any magnetic field, is a potential alternative for rectification or frequency doubling. However, the low temperature detection of NLHE limits its applications. Here, we report the room-temperature NLHE in a type-II Weyl semimetal TaIrTe4, which hosts a robust NLHE due to substantial broken inversion symmetry and large band overlapping at the Fermi level. We also observe a temperature-induced sign inversion of NLHE in TaIrTe4. Our theoretical calculations suggest that the observed sign inversion is a result of temperature-induced shift in the chemical potential indicating a direct correlation of NLHE with the electronic structure at the Fermi surface. Finally, the room-temperature NLHE in TaIrTe4 is exploited to demonstrate the wireless RF rectification with zero external bias and magnetic field. This work opens a door to realizing room temperature applications based on the NLHE in Weyl semimetals.

Fast automatic segmentation of thalamic nuclei from MP2RAGE acquisition at 7 Tesla

Purpose: Thalamic nuclei are largely invisible in conventional MRI due to poor contrast. Thalamus Optimized Multi-Atlas Segmentation (THOMAS) provides automatic segmentation of 12 thalamic nuclei using white-matter-nulled (WMn) MPRAGE sequence at 7T. Application of THOMAS to Magnetization Prepared 2 Rapid Gradient Echo (MP2RAGE) sequence acquired at 7T has been investigated in this study. Methods: 8 healthy volunteers and 5 pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis patients were recruited at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and scanned at Siemens 7T with WMn-MPRAGE and multi-echo MP2RAGE (ME-MP2RAGE) sequences. White-matter-nulled contrast was synthesized (MP2-SYN) from T1 maps from ME-MP2RAGE sequence. Thalamic nuclei were segmented using THOMAS joint label fusion algorithm from WMn-MPRAGE and MP2-SYN datasets. THOMAS pipeline was modified to use majority voting to segment the bias corrected MP2-UNI images. Thalamic nuclei from MP2-SYN and MP2-UNI images were evaluated against corresponding nuclei obtained from WMn-MPRAGE images using dice coefficients, volume similarity indices (VSI) and distance between centroids. Results: For MP2-SYN, dice > 0.85 and VSI > 0.95 was achieved for the 5 larger nuclei and dice > 0.6 and VSI > 0.7 was achieved for the 7 smaller nuclei. The dice and VSI were slightly higher whilst the distance between centroids were smaller for MP2-SYN compared to MP2-UNI, indicating improved performance using the synthesized WMn image. Discussion: THOMAS algorithm can successfully segment thalamic nuclei in routinely acquired bias-free MP2RAGE images with essentially equivalent quality when evaluated against WMn-MPRAGE, hence has wider applicability in studies focused on thalamic involvement in aging and disease.

Optical visualization of the enhanced spin Hall effect in bismuth doped silicon

Direct visualizations of spin accumulation due to the enhanced spin Hall effect (SHE) in bismuth (Bi) - doped silicon (Si) at room temperature are realized by using helicity-dependent photovoltage (HDP) measurements. Under application of a dc current to the Bi-doped Si, clear helicity-dependent photovoltages are detected at the edges of the Si channel, indicating a perpendicular spin accumulation due to the SHE. In contrast, the HDP signals are negligibly small for phosphorus-doped Si. Compared to a platinum channel, which has a large spin Hall angle, more than two-orders of magnitude larger HDP signals are obtained in the Bi-doped Si.

Symmetry Algebras of Stringy Cosets

We find the symmetry algebras of cosets which are generalizations of the minimal-model cosets, of the specific form $\frac{SU(N)_{k} \times SU(N)_{\ell}}{SU(N)_{k+\ell}}$. We study this coset in its free field limit, with $k,\ell \rightarrow \infty$, where it reduces to a theory of free bosons. We show that, in this limit and at large $N$, the algebra $\mathcal{W}^e_\infty[1]$ emerges as a sub-algebra of the coset algebra. The full coset algebra is a larger algebra than conventional $\mathcal{W}$-algebras, with the number of generators rising exponentially with the spin, characteristic of a stringy growth of states. We compare the coset algebra to the symmetry algebra of the large $N$ symmetric product orbifold CFT, which is known to have a stringy symmetry algebra labelled the `higher spin square'. We propose that the higher spin square is a sub-algebra of the symmetry algebra of our stringy coset.

Observation of transient superconductivity at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface

We report the observation of a magnetic field assisted transient superconducting state in the two dimensional electron gas existing at the interface of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures. This metastable state depends critically on the density of charge carriers in the system. It appears concomitantly with a Lifshitz transition as a consequence of the interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity and the finite relaxation time of the in-plane magnetization. Our results clearly demonstrate the inherently metastable nature of the superconducting state competing with a magnetic order in these systems. The co-existence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in the conducting electronic layer formed at the interface of insulating oxides has thrown up several intriguing and as yet unanswered questions. An open question in this field is the energetics of the interplay between these two competing orders and the present observation goes a long way in understanding the underlying mechanism.

Conformal embeddings and higher-spin bulk duals

It is well-known that conformal embeddings can be used to construct non-diagonal modular invariants for affine lie algebras. This idea can be extended to construct infinite series of non-diagonal modular invariants for coset CFTs. In this paper, we systematically approach the problem of identifying higher-spin bulk duals for these kind of non-diagonal invariants. In particular, for a special value of the 't Hooft coupling, there exist a class of partition functions that have enhanced supersymmetry, which should be reflected in a bulk dual. As a illustration of this, we show that a partition function of a orthogonal group coset CFT has a $\mathcal N=1$ supersymmetric higher-spin bulk dual, in the 't Hooft limit. We also propose that two of the series of CFT partition functions, obtained from conformal embeddings, are equal, generalising the well-known dual interpretation of the 3-state Potts model as a $\frac{SU(2)_3 \otimes SU(2)_1}{SU(2)_4}$ and also as a $\frac{SU(3)_1 \otimes SU(3)_1}{SU(3)_2}$ coset model.

On a Generalization of GKO Coset Construction of Conformal Field Theories

We introduce a generalization of Goddard-Kent-Olive (GKO) coset construction of two dimensional conformal field theories based on a choice of a scaled affine subalgebra $\hat{\mathfrak{h}}^s$ of a given affine Lie algebra $\hat{\mathfrak{h}}$. We study some aspects of the construction through the example of Ising CFT as a generalized GKO coset of $\text{su(2)}_1$ with a scaling factor $s=2$.

Defect-induced photoluminescence of strontium titanate and its modulation by electrostatic gating

The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of Ar-ion irradiated single crystals of SrTiO3 (STO) excited by the 325 nm line of a He-Cd laser are compared with those of pristine crystals, epitaxial films, and amorphous layers of STO at several temperatures down to 20 K. The 550 eV Ar-beam irradiation activates three distinctly visible PL peaks: blue (~430 nm), green (~550 nm), and infrared (~820 nm) at room temperature, making the photoluminescence multicolored. The abrupt changes in PL properties below ~100 K are discussed in relation with the antiferrodistortive structural phase transition in SrTiO3 from cubic to tetragonal symmetry, which makes it a direct bandgap semiconductor. The photoluminescence spectra are also tuned by an electrostatic gate field in a field-effect transistor geometry. At 20 K, we observed a maximum increase of ~20% in PL intensity under back gating of SrTiO3.

Dynamics of photo-generated non-equilibrium electronic states in Ar$^+$ ion irradiated SrTiO$_3$

A metallic surface is realized on stoichiometric and insulating (100) SrTiO$_3$ by Ar$^+$ - ion irradiation. The sheet carrier density and Hall mobility of the layer are $\sim$$4.0$ $\times$ $10^{14}$ $/cm^2$ and $\sim$$2$ $\times$ $10^3$ $cm^2/Vs$ respectively at 15 K for the irradiation dose of $\sim$4.2 $\times 10^{18}$ $ions/cm^2$. These samples display ultraviolet light sensitive photoconductivity (PC) which is enhanced abruptly below the temperature ($\approx$100 K) where SrTiO$_3$ crystal undergoes an antiferrodistortive cubic-to-tetragonal ($O_h^1$ $\rightarrow$ $D_{4h}^{18}$) structural phase transition. This behaviour of PC maps well with the temperature dependence of dielectric function and electric field induced conductivity. The longevity of the PC-state also shows a distinct change below $\approx$100 K. At $T > 100$ K its decay is thermally activated with energy barrier of $\approx$36 meV, whereas at $T < 100$ K it becomes independent of temperature. We have examined the effect of electrostatic gating on the lifetime of the PC state. One non-trivial result is the ambient temperature quenching of the photo-conducting state by the negative gate field. This observation opens avenues for designing a solid state photo-electric switch. The origin and lifetime of the PC-state are understood in the light of field effect induced band bending, defect dynamics and thermal relaxation processes.

Weak Coupling Expansion of Yang-Mills Theory on Recursive Infinite Genus Surfaces

We analyze the partition function of two dimensional Yang-Mills theory on a family of surfaces of infinite genus. These surfaces have a recursive structure, which was used by one of us to compute the partition function that results in a generalized Migdal formula. In this paper we study the `small area' (weak coupling) expansion of the partition function, by exploiting the fact that the generalized Migdal formula is analytic in the (complexification of the) Euler characteristic. The structure of the perturbative part of the weak coupling expansion suggests that the moduli space of flat connections (of the SU(2) and SO(3) theories) on these infinite genus surfaces are well defined, perhaps in an appropriate regularization.

Two-dimensional Yang-Mills Theory on Recursive Infinite Genus Surfaces

The partition function of Euclidean Yang-Mills theory on two dimensional surfaces is given by the Migdal formula. It involves the area and topological characteristics of the surface. We consider this theory on a class of infinite genus surfaces that are constructed recursively. We make use of this recursive structure to compute the partition functions (with or without additional Wilson loops) on such surfaces. Our method also works for the quantum deformed Yang-Mills theory.

Giant coercivity enhancement and dimensional crossover of superconductivity in Co2FeSi-NbN nanoscale bilayers

Proximity coupling and magnetic switching dynamics are shown to be correlated in bilayers (B) of fully spin polarized ferromagnet (F) Co2FeSi and superconductor (S) NbN. The upper critical field derived from resistivity measurements shows a dimensional crossover with a reduced effective thickness of the S layer. At temperatures (T) << superconducting Tc, the measured M-H loops show two step switching; one at T-independent value ~ 7 Oe and other at strongly T-dependent value becoming very large ~ 1 kOe at 2 K. These results reveal induced ferromagnetism in S-layer at the S/F interface with vortex pinning influenced dynamics.

Honeycomb antiferromagnet with a triply degenerate dimer ground state

We present an antiferromagnetic quantum spin-1/2 model on honeycomb lattice. It has two parts, one of which is the usual nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model. The other part is a certain multiple spin interaction term, introduced by us, which is exactly solvable for the ground state. Without the Heisenberg part, the model has an exact threefold degenerate dimer ground state. This exact ground state is also noted to exist for the general spin-S case. For the spin-1/2 case, we further carry out the triplon analysis in the ground state, to study the competition between the Heisenberg and the multiple spin interactions. This approximate calculation exhibits a continuous quantum phase transition from the dimer order to Néel order.
