Covert D2D Communication Underlaying Cellular Network: A System-Level Security Perspective

In this paper, we aim to secure the D2D communication of the D2D-underlaid cellular network by leveraging covert communication to hide its presence from the vigilant adversary. In particular, there are adversaries aiming to detect D2D communications based on their received signal powers. To avoid being detected, the legitimate entity, i.e., D2D-underlaid cellular network, performs power control so as to hide the presence of the D2D communication. We model the combat between the adversaries and the legitimate entity as a two-stage Stackelberg game. Therein, the adversaries are the followers and aim to minimize their detection errors at the lower stage while the legitimate entity is the leader and aims to maximize its utility constrained by the D2D communication covertness and the cellular quality of service (QoS) at the upper stage. Different from the conventional works, the study of the combat is conducted from the system-level perspective, where the scenario that a large-scale D2D-underlaid cellular network threatened by massive spatially distributed adversaries is considered and the network spatial configuration is modeled by stochastic geometry. We obtain the adversary's optimal strategy as the best response from the lower stage and also both analytically and numerically verify its optimality. Taking into account the best response from the lower stage, we design a bi-level algorithm based on the successive convex approximation (SCA) method to search for the optimal strategy of the legitimate entity, which together with the best response from the lower stage constitute the Stackelberg equilibrium. Numerical results are presented to evaluate the network performance and reveal practical insights that instead of improving the legitimate utility by strengthening the D2D link reliability, increasing D2D transmission power will degrade it due to the security concern.

Blockchain-aided Secure Semantic Communication for AI-Generated Content in Metaverse

The construction of virtual transportation networks requires massive data to be transmitted from edge devices to Virtual Service Providers (VSP) to facilitate circulations between the physical and virtual domains in Metaverse. Leveraging semantic communication for reducing information redundancy, VSPs can receive semantic data from edge devices to provide varied services through advanced techniques, e.g., AI-Generated Content (AIGC), for users to explore digital worlds. But the use of semantic communication raises a security issue because attackers could send malicious semantic data with similar semantic information but different desired content to break Metaverse services and cause wrong output of AIGC. Therefore, in this paper, we first propose a blockchain-aided semantic communication framework for AIGC services in virtual transportation networks to facilitate interactions of the physical and virtual domains among VSPs and edge devices. We illustrate a training-based targeted semantic attack scheme to generate adversarial semantic data by various loss functions. We also design a semantic defense scheme that uses the blockchain and zero-knowledge proofs to tell the difference between the semantic similarities of adversarial and authentic semantic data and to check the authenticity of semantic data transformations. Simulation results show that the proposed defense method can reduce the semantic similarity of the adversarial semantic data and the authentic ones by up to 30% compared with the attack scheme.

Generative AI-empowered Effective Physical-Virtual Synchronization in the Vehicular Metaverse

Metaverse seamlessly blends the physical world and virtual space via ubiquitous communication and computing infrastructure. In transportation systems, the vehicular Metaverse can provide a fully-immersive and hyperreal traveling experience (e.g., via augmented reality head-up displays, AR-HUDs) to drivers and users in autonomous vehicles (AVs) via roadside units (RSUs). However, provisioning real-time and immersive services necessitates effective physical-virtual synchronization between physical and virtual entities, i.e., AVs and Metaverse AR recommenders (MARs). In this paper, we propose a generative AI-empowered physical-virtual synchronization framework for the vehicular Metaverse. In physical-to-virtual synchronization, digital twin (DT) tasks generated by AVs are offloaded for execution in RSU with future route generation. In virtual-to-physical synchronization, MARs customize diverse and personal AR recommendations via generative AI models based on user preferences. Furthermore, we propose a multi-task enhanced auction-based mechanism to match and price AVs and MARs for RSUs to provision real-time and effective services. Finally, property analysis and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed mechanism is strategy-proof and adverse-selection free while increasing social surplus by 50%.

Imitation Learning-based Implicit Semantic-aware Communication Networks: Multi-layer Representation and Collaborative Reasoning

Semantic communication has recently attracted significant interest from both industry and academia due to its potential to transform the existing data-focused communication architecture towards a more generally intelligent and goal-oriented semantic-aware networking system. Despite its promising potential, semantic communications and semantic-aware networking are still at their infancy. Most existing works focus on transporting and delivering the explicit semantic information, e.g., labels or features of objects, that can be directly identified from the source signal. The original definition of semantics as well as recent results in cognitive neuroscience suggest that it is the implicit semantic information, in particular the hidden relations connecting different concepts and feature items that plays the fundamental role in recognizing, communicating, and delivering the real semantic meanings of messages. Motivated by this observation, we propose a novel reasoning-based implicit semantic-aware communication network architecture that allows multiple tiers of CDC and edge servers to collaborate and support efficient semantic encoding, decoding, and interpretation for end-users. We introduce a new multi-layer representation of semantic information taking into consideration both the hierarchical structure of implicit semantics as well as the personalized inference preference of individual users. We model the semantic reasoning process as a reinforcement learning process and then propose an imitation-based semantic reasoning mechanism learning (iRML) solution for the edge servers to leaning a reasoning policy that imitates the inference behavior of the source user. A federated GCN-based collaborative reasoning solution is proposed to allow multiple edge servers to jointly construct a shared semantic interpretation model based on decentralized knowledge datasets.

Stochastic Qubit Resource Allocation for Quantum Cloud Computing

Quantum cloud computing is a promising paradigm for efficiently provisioning quantum resources (i.e., qubits) to users. In quantum cloud computing, quantum cloud providers provision quantum resources in reservation and on-demand plans for users. Literally, the cost of quantum resources in the reservation plan is expected to be cheaper than the cost of quantum resources in the on-demand plan. However, quantum resources in the reservation plan have to be reserved in advance without information about the requirement of quantum circuits beforehand, and consequently, the resources are insufficient, i.e., under-reservation. Hence, quantum resources in the on-demand plan can be used to compensate for the unsatisfied quantum resources required. To end this, we propose a quantum resource allocation for the quantum cloud computing system in which quantum resources and the minimum waiting time of quantum circuits are jointly optimized. Particularly, the objective is to minimize the total costs of quantum circuits under uncertainties regarding qubit requirement and minimum waiting time of quantum circuits. In experiments, practical circuits of quantum Fourier transform are applied to evaluate the proposed qubit resource allocation. The results illustrate that the proposed qubit resource allocation can achieve the optimal total costs.

A Primer on Rate-Splitting Multiple Access: Tutorial, Myths, and Frequently Asked Questions

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) has emerged as a powerful multiple access, interference management, and multi-user strategy for next generation communication systems. In this tutorial, we depart from the orthogonal multiple access (OMA) versus non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) discussion held in 5G, and the conventional multi-user linear precoding approach used in space-division multiple access (SDMA), multi-user and massive MIMO in 4G and 5G, and show how multi-user communications and multiple access design for 6G and beyond should be intimately related to the fundamental problem of interference management. We start from foundational principles of interference management and rate-splitting, and progressively delineate RSMA frameworks for downlink, uplink, and multi-cell networks. We show that, in contrast to past generations of multiple access techniques (OMA, NOMA, SDMA), RSMA offers numerous benefits. We then discuss how those benefits translate into numerous opportunities for RSMA in over forty different applications and scenarios of 6G. We finally address common myths and answer frequently asked questions, opening the discussions to interesting future research avenues. Supported by the numerous benefits and applications, the tutorial concludes on the underpinning role played by RSMA in next generation networks, which should inspire future research, development, and standardization of RSMA-aided communication for 6G.

Enabling AI-Generated Content (AIGC) Services in Wireless Edge Networks

Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content (AIGC) refers to the use of AI to automate the information creation process while fulfilling the personalized requirements of users. However, due to the instability of AIGC models, e.g., the stochastic nature of diffusion models, the quality and accuracy of the generated content can vary significantly. In wireless edge networks, the transmission of incorrectly generated content may unnecessarily consume network resources. Thus, a dynamic AIGC service provider (ASP) selection scheme is required to enable users to connect to the most suited ASP, improving the users' satisfaction and quality of generated content. In this article, we first review the AIGC techniques and their applications in wireless networks. We then present the AIGC-as-a-service (AaaS) concept and discuss the challenges in deploying AaaS at the edge networks. Yet, it is essential to have performance metrics to evaluate the accuracy of AIGC services. Thus, we introduce several image-based perceived quality evaluation metrics. Then, we propose a general and effective model to illustrate the relationship between computational resources and user-perceived quality evaluation metrics. To achieve efficient AaaS and maximize the quality of generated content in wireless edge networks, we propose a deep reinforcement learning-enabled algorithm for optimal ASP selection. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can provide a higher quality of generated content to users and achieve fewer crashed tasks by comparing with four benchmarks, i.e., overloading-avoidance, random, round-robin policies, and the upper-bound schemes.

Evolutionary Carrier Selection for Shared Truck Delivery Services

With multiple carriers in a logistics market, customers can choose the best carrier to deliver their products and packages. In this paper, we present a novel approach of using the stochastic evolutionary game to analyze the decision-making of the customers using the less-than-truckload (LTL) delivery service. We propose inter-related optimization and game models that allow us to analyze the vehicle routing optimization for the LTL carriers and carrier selection for the customers, respectively. The stochastic evolutionary game model incorporates a small perturbation of customers' decision-making which exists due to irrationality. The solution of the stochastic evolutionary game in terms of stochastically stable states is characterized by using the Markov chain model. The numerical results show the impact of carriers' and customers' parameters on the stable states.

Optimization of Image Transmission in a Cooperative Semantic Communication Networks

In this paper, a semantic communication framework for image transmission is developed. In the investigated framework, a set of servers cooperatively transmit images to a set of users utilizing semantic communication techniques. To evaluate the performance of studied semantic communication system, a multimodal metric is proposed to measure the correlation between the extracted semantic information and the original image. To meet the ISS requirement of each user, each server must jointly determine the semantic information to be transmitted and the resource blocks (RBs) used for semantic information transmission. We formulate this problem as an optimization problem aiming to minimize each server's transmission latency while reaching the ISS requirement. To solve this problem, a value decomposition based entropy-maximized multi-agent reinforcement learning (RL) is proposed, which enables servers to coordinate for training and execute RB allocation in a distributed manner to approach to a globally optimal performance with less training iterations. Compared to traditional multi-agent RL, the proposed RL improves the valuable action exploration of servers and the probability of finding a globally optimal RB allocation policy based on local observation. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the transmission delay by up to 16.1% compared to traditional multi-agent RL.

Hierarchical Deep Reinforcement Learning for Age-of-Information Minimization in IRS-aided and Wireless-powered Wireless Networks

In this paper, we focus on a wireless-powered sensor network coordinated by a multi-antenna access point (AP). Each node can generate sensing information and report the latest information to the AP using the energy harvested from the AP's signal beamforming. We aim to minimize the average age-of-information (AoI) by adapting the nodes' transmission scheduling and the transmission control strategies jointly. To reduce the transmission delay, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is used to enhance the channel conditions by controlling the AP's beamforming vector and the IRS's phase shifting matrix. Considering dynamic data arrivals at different sensing nodes, we propose a hierarchical deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework to for AoI minimization in two steps. The users' transmission scheduling is firstly determined by the outer-loop DRL approach, e.g. the DQN or PPO algorithm, and then the inner-loop optimization is used to adapt either the uplink information transmission or downlink energy transfer to all nodes. A simple and efficient approximation is also proposed to reduce the inner-loop rum time overhead. Numerical results verify that the hierarchical learning framework outperforms typical baselines in terms of the average AoI and proportional fairness among different nodes.

Bayesian Optimization Enhanced Deep Reinforcement Learning for Trajectory Planning and Network Formation in Multi-UAV Networks

In this paper, we employ multiple UAVs coordinated by a base station (BS) to help the ground users (GUs) to offload their sensing data. Different UAVs can adapt their trajectories and network formation to expedite data transmissions via multi-hop relaying. The trajectory planning aims to collect all GUs' data, while the UAVs' network formation optimizes the multi-hop UAV network topology to minimize the energy consumption and transmission delay. The joint network formation and trajectory optimization is solved by a two-step iterative approach. Firstly, we devise the adaptive network formation scheme by using a heuristic algorithm to balance the UAVs' energy consumption and data queue size. Then, with the fixed network formation, the UAVs' trajectories are further optimized by using multi-agent deep reinforcement learning without knowing the GUs' traffic demands and spatial distribution. To improve the learning efficiency, we further employ Bayesian optimization to estimate the UAVs' flying decisions based on historical trajectory points. This helps avoid inefficient action explorations and improves the convergence rate in the model training. The simulation results reveal close spatial-temporal couplings between the UAVs' trajectory planning and network formation. Compared with several baselines, our solution can better exploit the UAVs' cooperation in data offloading, thus improving energy efficiency and delay performance.

Full-Life Cycle Intent-Driven Network Verification: Challenges and Approaches

With the human friendly declarative intent policy expression, intent-driven network can make network management and configuration autonomous without human intervention. However, the availability and dependability of these refined policies from the expressed intents should be well ensured by full-life cycle verification. Moreover, intent-driven network verification is still in its initial stage, and there is a lack of full-life cycle end-to-end verification framework. As a result, in this article, we present and review existing verification techniques, and classify them according to objective, purpose, and feedback. Furthermore, we describe intent verification as a technology that provides assurance during the intent form conversion process and propose a novel full-life cycle verification framework that expands on the concept of traditional network verification. Finally, we verify the feasibility and validity of the presented verification framework in the case of an access control policy for different network functions with multi conflict intents.

Rethinking Quality of Experience for Metaverse Services: A Consumer-based Economics Perspective

The Metaverse is considered to be one prototype of the next-generation Internet, which contains people's expectations for the future world. However, the academic discussion of the Metaverse still mainly focused on the technical system design, and few research studied Metaverse challenges from the perspective of consumers, i.e., Metaverse users. One difficulty is that the analysis from the consumer's perspective requires interdisciplinary theoretical framework and quantifiable Quality of Experience (QoE) measurements. In this article, pioneering from consumers' point of view, we explore an interaction between Metaverse system design and consumer behaviors. Specifically, we rethink QoE and propose an framework that encompasses both the Metaverse service providers (MSPs) and consumer considerations. From the macro perspective, we introduce a joint optimization scheme that simultaneously considers the Metaverse system design, consumers' utility, and profitability of the MSPs. From the micro perspective, we advocate the Willingness-to-Pay (WTP) as an easy-to-implement measurement for future Metaverse system studies. To illustrate the usability of the proposed integrated framework, a use case, i.e., virtual traveling, is presented. We show that our framework can benefit the MSPs in offering competitive and economical service design to consumers while maximizing the profit.

A Blockchain-based Semantic Exchange Framework for Web 3.0 toward Participatory Economy

Web 3.0 is the next-generation Internet that enables participants to read, write, and own contents in a decentralized manner. It is mainly driven by blockchain, semantic communication, edge computing, and artificial intelligence, which can construct value networks to achieve participatory economics based on participatory decision making. Web 3.0 can capture the characteristics of blockchain, semantic extraction, and communication to achieve decentralized semantic sharing and transfer information precisely. However, current Web 3.0 solutions focus on the blockchain while overlooking other new technologies' roles in Web 3.0. To further unleash the advantages of semantic extraction and communication in Web 3.0, in this paper, we propose a blockchain-based semantic exchange framework to realize fair and efficient interactions. In this framework, we first attempt to tokenize semantic information into Non-Fungible Token (NFT) for semantic exchange. Then we utilize a Stackelberg game to maximize buying and pricing strategies for semantic trading. We also leverage Zero-Knowledge Proof to share authentic semantic information without publishing it before receiving payments, which can achieve a fair and privacy-preserving trading compared with current NFT marketplaces. A case study about urban planning is given to show clearly the proposed mechanisms. Finally, several challenges and opportunities are identified.

When Quantum Information Technologies Meet Blockchain in Web 3.0

With the drive to create a decentralized digital economy, Web 3.0 has become a cornerstone of digital transformation, developed on the basis of computing-force networking, distributed data storage, and blockchain. With the rapid realization of quantum devices, Web 3.0 is being developed in parallel with the deployment of quantum cloud computing and quantum Internet. In this regard, quantum computing first disrupts the original cryptographic systems that protect data security while reshaping modern cryptography with the advantages of quantum computing and communication. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a quantum blockchain-driven Web 3.0 framework that provides information-theoretic security for decentralized data transferring and payment transactions. First, we present the framework of quantum blockchain-driven Web 3.0 with future-proof security during the transmission of data and transaction information. Next, we discuss the potential applications and challenges of implementing quantum blockchain in Web 3.0. Finally, we describe a use case for quantum non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and propose a quantum deep learning-based optimal auction for NFT trading to maximize the achievable revenue for sufficient liquidity in Web 3.0. In this way, the proposed framework can achieve proven security and sustainability for the next-generation decentralized digital society.

Performance Analysis of Free-Space Information Sharing in Full-Duplex Semantic Communications

In next-generation Internet services, such as Metaverse, the mixed reality (MR) technique plays a vital role. Yet the limited computing capacity of the user-side MR headset-mounted device (HMD) prevents its further application, especially in scenarios that require a lot of computation. One way out of this dilemma is to design an efficient information sharing scheme among users to replace the heavy and repetitive computation. In this paper, we propose a free-space information sharing mechanism based on full-duplex device-to-device (D2D) semantic communications. Specifically, the view images of MR users in the same real-world scenario may be analogous. Therefore, when one user (i.e., a device) completes some computation tasks, the user can send his own calculation results and the semantic features extracted from the user's own view image to nearby users (i.e., other devices). On this basis, other users can use the received semantic features to obtain the spatial matching of the computational results under their own view images without repeating the computation. Using generalized small-scale fading models, we analyze the key performance indicators of full-duplex D2D communications, including channel capacity and bit error probability, which directly affect the transmission of semantic information. Finally, the numerical analysis experiment proves the effectiveness of our proposed methods.

Wireless Sensing Data Collection and Processing for Metaverse Avatar Construction

Recent advances in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and extended reality have pushed the Metaverse, a virtual, shared space, into reality. In Metaverse, users can customize virtual avatars to experience a different life. While impressive, avatar construction requires a lot of data that manifest users in the physical world from various perspectives, and wireless sensing data is one of them. For example, machine learning (ML) and signal processing can help extract information about user behavior from sensing data, thereby facilitating avatar behavior construction in the Metaverse. This article presents a wireless sensing dataset to support the emerging research on Metaverse avatar construction. Rigorously, the existing data collection platforms and datasets are analyzed first. On this basis, we introduce the platform used in this paper, as well as the data collection method and scenario. We observe that the collected sensing data, i.e., channel state information (CSI), suffers from a phase shift problem, which negatively affects the extraction of user information such as behavior and heartbeat and further deteriorates the avatar construction. Therefore, we propose to detect and correct this phase shift by a sliding window and phase compensation, respectively, and then validate the proposed scheme with the collected data. Finally, several research directions related to the avatar construction are given from the perspective of datasets.

Semantic-Aware Sensing Information Transmission for Metaverse: A Contest Theoretic Approach

With the advancement of network and computer technologies, virtual cyberspace keeps evolving, and Metaverse is the main representative. As an irreplaceable technology that supports Metaverse, the sensing information transmission from the physical world to Metaverse is vital. Inspired by emerging semantic communication, in this paper, we propose a semantic transmission framework for transmitting sensing information from the physical world to Metaverse. Leveraging the in-depth understanding of sensing information, we define the semantic bases, through which the semantic encoding of sensing data is achieved for the first time. Consequently, the amount of sensing data that needs to be transmitted is dramatically reduced. Unlike conventional methods that undergo data degradation and require data recovery, our approach achieves the sensing goal without data recovery while maintaining performance. To further improve Metaverse service quality, we introduce contest theory to create an incentive mechanism that motivates users to upload data more frequently. Experimental results show that the average data amount after semantic encoding is reduced to about 27.87% of that before encoding, while ensuring the sensing performance. Additionally, the proposed contest theoretic based incentive mechanism increases the sum of data uploading frequency by 27.47% compared to the uniform award scheme.
