Estimating the Euclidean distortion of an orbit space

Given a finite-dimensional inner product space $V$ and a group $G$ of isometries, we consider the problem of embedding the orbit space $V/G$ into a Hilbert space in a way that preserves the quotient metric as well as possible. This inquiry is motivated by applications to invariant machine learning. We introduce several new theoretical tools before using them to tackle various fundamental instances of this problem.

On the clustering behavior of sliding windows

Things can go spectacularly wrong when clustering timeseries data that has been preprocessed with a sliding window. We highlight three surprising failures that emerge depending on how the window size compares with the timeseries length. In addition to computational examples, we present theoretical explanations for each of these failure modes.

The Erdős unit distance problem for small point sets

We improve the best known upper bound on the number of edges in a unit-distance graph on $n$ vertices for each $n\in\{16,\ldots,30\}$. When $n\leq 21$, our bounds match the best known lower bounds, and we fully enumerate the densest unit-distance graphs in these cases. On the combinatorial side, our principle technique is to more efficiently generate $\mathcal{F}$-free graphs for a set of forbidden subgraphs $\mathcal{F}$. On the algebraic side, we are able to determine programmatically whether many graphs are unit-distance, using a custom embedder that is more efficient in practice than tools such as cylindrical algebraic decomposition.

Recovering a group from few orbits

For an unknown finite group $G$ of automorphisms of a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, we find sharp bounds on the number of generic $G$-orbits needed to recover $G$ up to group isomorphism, as well as the number needed to recover $G$ as a concrete set of automorphisms.

Injectivity, stability, and positive definiteness of max filtering

Given a real inner product space V and a group G of linear isometries, max filtering offers a rich class of G-invariant maps. In this paper, we identify nearly sharp conditions under which these maps injectively embed the orbit space V/G into Euclidean space, and when G is finite, we estimate the map's distortion of the quotient metric. We also characterize when max filtering is a positive definite kernel.

More on the optimal arrangement of $2d$ lines in $\mathbb{C}^d$

We introduce a new infinite family of $d\times 2d$ equiangular tight frames. Many matrices in this family consist of two $d\times d$ circulant blocks. We conjecture that such equiangular tight frames exist for every $d$. We show that our conjecture holds for $d\leq 165$ by a computer-assisted application of a Newton-Kantorovich theorem. In addition, we supply numerical constructions that corroborate our conjecture for $d\leq 1500$.

The nerd snipers problem

We correct errors that appear throughout "The vicious neighbour problem" by Tao and Wu. We seek to solve the following problem. Suppose $N$ nerds are distributed uniformly at random in a square region. At 3:14pm, every nerd simultaneously snipes their nearest neighbor. What is the expected proportion $P_N$ of nerds who are left unscathed in the limit as $N\to\infty$?

Optimal codes in the Stiefel manifold

We consider the coding problem in the Stiefel manifold with chordal distance. After considering various low-dimensional instances of this problem, we use Rankin's bounds on spherical codes to prove upper bounds on the minimum distance of a Stiefel code, and then we construct several examples of codes that achieve equality in these bounds.

A lower bound for the Balan--Jiang matrix problem

We prove the existence of a positive semidefinite matrix $A \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n}$ such that any decomposition into rank-1 matrices has to have factors with a large $\ell^1-$norm, more precisely $$ \sum_{k} x_k x_k^*=A \quad \implies \quad \sum_k \|x_k\|^2_{1} \geq c \sqrt{n} \|A\|_{1},$$ where $c$ is independent of $n$. This provides a lower bound for the Balan--Jiang matrix problem. The construction is probabilistic.

Towards a bilipschitz invariant theory

Consider the quotient of a Hilbert space by a subgroup of its automorphisms. We study whether this orbit space can be embedded into a Hilbert space by a bilipschitz map, and we identify constraints on such embeddings.

Doubly transitive lines II: Almost simple symmetries

We study lines through the origin of finite-dimensional complex vector spaces that enjoy a doubly transitive automorphism group. This paper classifies those lines that exhibit almost simple symmetries. We introduce a general recipe involving Schur covers to recover doubly transitive lines from their automorphism group. Combining our results with recent work on the affine case by Dempwolff and Kantor, we deduce a classification of all linearly dependent doubly transitive lines in real or complex space.

Equi-isoclinic subspaces, covers of the complete graph, and complex conference matrices

In 1992, Godsil and Hensel published a ground-breaking study of distance-regular antipodal covers of the complete graph that, among other things, introduced an important connection with equi-isoclinic subspaces. This connection seems to have been overlooked, as many of its immediate consequences have never been detailed in the literature. To correct this situation, we first describe how Godsil and Hensel's machine uses representation theory to construct equi-isoclinic tight fusion frames. Applying this machine to Mathon's construction produces $q+1$ planes in $\mathbb{R}^{q+1}$ for any even prime power $q>2$. Despite being an application of the 30-year-old Godsil-Hensel result, infinitely many of these parameters have never been enunciated in the literature. Following ideas from Et-Taoui, we then investigate a fruitful interplay with complex symmetric conference matrices.

Max filtering with reflection groups

Given a finite-dimensional real inner product space V and a finite subgroup G of linear isometries, max filtering affords a bilipschitz Euclidean embedding of the orbit space V/G. We identify the max filtering maps of minimum distortion in the setting where G is a reflection group. Our analysis involves an interplay between Coxeter's classification and semidefinite programming.

On the concentration of Gaussian Cayley matrices

Given a finite group, we study the Gaussian series of the matrices in the image of its left regular representation. We propose such random matrices as a benchmark for improvements to the noncommutative Khintchine inequality, and we highlight an application to the matrix Spencer conjecture.

Sketch-and-solve approaches to k-means clustering by semidefinite programming

We introduce a sketch-and-solve approach to speed up the Peng-Wei semidefinite relaxation of k-means clustering. When the data is appropriately separated we identify the k-means optimal clustering. Otherwise, our approach provides a high-confidence lower bound on the optimal k-means value. This lower bound is data-driven; it does not make any assumption on the data nor how it is generated. We provide code and an extensive set of numerical experiments where we use this approach to certify approximate optimality of clustering solutions obtained by k-means++.
