Lengths of Reeb chords and Viterbo restriction

Let $Λ$ be a Legendrian in the contact boundary of a Liouville domain $Ω$. We explain how the non-existence of Reeb chords with endpoints on $Λ$ of length up to $a$ enables one to embed $D_εT^{*}Λ\times D(a)$ into $Ω$ in an exact way. As in earlier work of Zhengyi Zhou, we use the Viterbo restriction map to deduce a contradiction in certain cases. In particular, we show that if $M$ admits a submersion from a product of spheres (e.g., the $n$-torus), then all compact Legendrians $Λ\subset ST^{*}M$ admit a Reeb chord for every choice of contact form $ST^{*}M$. The obstruction we use in this case is based on the idea of inverting the degree-$n$ classes in cohomology, and is similar to the notion of string point invertibility introduced by Egor Shelukhin.

The strong Arnol'd chord conjecture for the boundary of a uniformly convex domain in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$

Following the idea of Jungsoo Kang and Jun Zhang, we prove the strong Arnol'd chord conjecture for the boundary of a uniformly convex domain in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$, using an ellipsoid embedding construction due to Oliver Edtmair. We prove a general structural result for Legendrians $L$ which are eventually equivariantly essential (E3), in the sense that the $k$th Gutt-Hutchings capacity $c_{k}(D^{*}TL)$ is infinite for $k$ large enough. We show that any E3 Legendrian in the boundary of a Liouville domain $Ω$ bounds a chord of length at most $\liminf c_{k}(Ω)/k$.

Equivariant Floer cohomology for contactomorphisms of quotient spaces

This paper establishes the orderability of contact manifolds which are quotients of fillable contact manifolds under finite group actions compatible with the filling, the prototypical example being $\mathbb{R}P^{2n-1}$ as the quotient of $S^{2n-1}$. Our approach employs an equivariant formulation of the so-called contact Floer cohomology theory. This leads us to develop an analogue of Givental's nonlinear Maslov index using the $\mathbf{k}[[x]]$-module structure on an equivariant version of contact Floer cohomology. A key idea is that mapping cones of continuation maps detect crossings with the discriminant (recall that Givental's index is a continuous integer valued function on the complement of the discriminant). To properly handle the inherent non-canonicity in defining such mapping cones, we lift the structure of contact Floer cohomology to chain level by defining it as an $\infty$-functor on a suitable $\infty$-categorification of the Eliashberg-Polterovich orderability relation on the universal cover of the contactomorphism group.

On the spectral diameter of the Grassmannians

The diameter of the spectral pseudometric on the universal cover of the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group of $\mathrm{Gr}(2,p)$ is shown to be finite whenever $p$ is a prime number. On the other hand, it is shown that the diameter is infinite in the case of $\mathrm{Gr}(2k,2n)$ for all natural numbers $k<n$.

Equivariant Lagrangian displacements

This paper proves that certain monotone Lagrangians in the standard symplectic vector space cannot be displaced by a Hamiltonian isotopy which commutes with the antipodal map. The method of proof is to develop a Borel equivariant version of the quantum cohomology of Biran and Cornea, and prove it is sensitive to equivariant displacements. The Floer--Euler class of Biran and Khanevsky appears as a term in the equivariant differential in certain cases.

Parametric Gromov width of Liouville domains

The classical Gromov width measures the largest symplectic ball embeddable into a symplectic manifold; inspired by the symplectic camel problem, we generalize this to ask how large a symplectic ball can be embedded as a family over a parameter space $N$. Given a smooth map $f: N \to Ω$, where $Ω$ is a symplectic manifold, we define the \emph{parametric Gromov width} $\mathrm{Gr}(f,Ω)$ as the supremum of capacities $a>0$ for which there exists a family of balls, parametrized by $N$, of capacity $a$ whose centers trace out the map $f$. For Liouville domains $Ω$, we establish upper bounds on $\mathrm{Gr}(f,Ω)$ using the Floer cohomology persistence module associated to $Ω$. Specializing to fiberwise starshaped domains in the cotangent bundle $T^*M$, we derive computable bounds via filtered string topology. Specific examples of $Ω$ -- including disk cotangent bundles of thin ellipsoids, open books, and tori -- demonstrate our bounds, and reveal constraints on parameterized symplectic embeddings beyond the classical Gromov width.

Remarks on eternal classes in symplectic cohomology

This paper studies special classes in the symplectic cohomology of a semipositive and convex-at-infinity symplectic manifold $W$. The classes under consideration lie in the image of every continuation map (for this reason, we call them eternal classes as they are never born and never die). Non-eternal classes in symplectic cohomology can be used to define spectral invariants for contact isotopies of the ideal boundary $Y$ of $W$. It is shown that the spectral invariants of non-eternal classes behave sub-additively with respect to the pair-of-pants product. This is used to define a spectral pseudo-metric on the universal cover of the group of contactomorphisms. We also give criteria for existence and non-existence of eternal classes. First, a compact monotone Lagrangian with odd Euler characteristic and minimal Maslov number at least $2$ implies the existence of non-zero eternal classes (e.g., $T^{*}\mathrm{RP}^{2n}$ has non-zero eternal classes). Second, no non-zero eternal classes exist if every compact set in $W$ is smoothly displaceable (e.g., $T^{*}T^{n}$ has no non-zero eternal classes).

On the spectral capacity of submanifolds

The infimum of the spectral capacities of neighbourhoods of a nowhere coisotropic submanifold is shown to be zero. In contrast, neighbourhoods of a closed Lagrangian submanifold, and of certain contact-type hypersurfaces, are shown to have uniformly positive spectral capacity. Along the way we prove a quantitative Lagrangian control estimate relating spectral invariants, boundary depth, and the minimal area of holomorphic disks. The Lagrangian control also provides novel obstructions to certain Lagrangian embeddings into a symplectic ball.

On the rigidity of translated points

We show that there exist contact isotopies of the standard contact sphere whose time-1 maps do not have any translated points which are optimally close to the identity in the Shelukhin-Hofer distance. This proves the sharpness of a theorem of Shelukhin on the existence of translated points for contact isotopies of Liouville fillable contact manifolds with small enough Shelukhin-Hofer norm.

The spectral diameter of a symplectic ellipsoid

The spectral diameter of a symplectic ball is shown to be equal to its capacity; this result upgrades the known bound by a factor of two and yields a simple formula for the spectral diameter of a symplectic ellipsoid. We also study the relationship between the spectral diameter and packings by two balls.

Selective Floer cohomology for contact vector fields

This paper associates a persistence module to a contact vector field $X$ on the ideal boundary of a Liouville manifold. The persistence module measures the dynamics of $X$ on the region $Ω$ where $X$ is positively transverse to the contact distribution. The colimit of the persistence module depends only on the domain $Ω$ and is a variant of the selective symplectic homology introduced by the second named author. As an application we prove existence of positive orbits for certain classes of contact vector fields. Another application of this invariant is that we recover the famous non-squeezing result of Eliashberg, Kim, and Polterovich.

Shelukhin's Hofer distance and a symplectic cohomology barcode for contactomorphisms

This paper constructs a persistence module of Floer cohomology groups associated to a contactomorphism of the ideal boundary of a Liouville manifold. The barcode (or, bottleneck) distance between the persistence modules is bounded from above by Shelukhin's Hofer distance. Moreover, the barcode is supported (i.e., has spectrum) on the lengths of translated points of the contactomorphism. We use this structure to prove various existence results for translated points and to construct spectral invariants for contactomorphisms which are monotone with respect to positive paths and continuous with respect to Shelukhin's Hofer distance. While this paper was nearing completion, the author was made aware of similar upcoming work by Djordjević, Uljarević, Zhang.

Extensible positive loops and vanishing of symplectic cohomology

The symplectic cohomology of certain symplectic manifolds $W$ with non-compact ends modelled on the positive symplectization of a compact contact manifold $Y$ is shown to vanish whenever there is a positive loop of contactomorphisms of $Y$ which extends to a loop of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of $W$. An open string version of this result is also proved: the wrapped Floer cohomology of a Lagrangian $L$ with ideal Legendrian boundary $Λ$ is shown to vanish if there is a positive loop $Λ_{t}$ based at $Λ$ which extends to an exact loop of Lagrangians based at $L$. Various examples of such loops are considered. Applications include the construction of exotic compactly supported symplectomorphisms and exotic fillings of $Λ$.

The chord conjecture for conormal bundles

We prove Arnol'd's chord conjecture for all Legendrian submanifolds of cosphere bundles of closed manifolds isotopic to conormal bundles of closed submanifolds. Our method of proof involves an isomorphism between wrapped Floer cohomology and the homology of a path space with coefficients in a local system and a twisted version of the Hurewicz theorem.

Lagrangian Intersections and the spectral norm in convex-at-infinity symplectic manifolds

Given a compact Lagrangian $L$ in a semipositive convex-at-infinity symplectic manifold $W$, we establish a cup-length estimate for the action values of $L$ associated to a Hamiltonian isotopy whose spectral norm is smaller than some $\hbar(L)$. When $L$ is rational, this implies a cup-length estimate on the number of intersection points. This Chekanov-type result generalizes a theorem of Kislev and Shelukhin proving non-displaceability in the case when $W$ is closed and monotone. The method of proof is to deform the pair-of-pants product on Hamiltonian Floer cohomology using the Lagrangian $L$.

Bordism classes of loops and Floer's equation in cotangent bundles

For each representative $\mathfrak{B}$ of a bordism class in the free loop space of a manifold, we associate a moduli space of finite length Floer cylinders in the cotangent bundle. The left end of the Floer cylinder is required to be a lift of one of the loops in $\mathfrak{B}$, and the right end is required to lie on the zero section. Under certain assumptions on the Hamiltonian functions, the length of the Floer cylinder is a smooth proper function, and evaluating the level sets at the right end produces a family of loops cobordant to $\mathfrak{B}$. The argument produces arbitrarily long Floer cylinders with certain properties. We apply this to prove an existence result for 1-periodic orbits of certain Hamiltonian systems in cotangent bundles, and also to estimate the relative Gromov width of starshaped domains in certain cotangent bundles. The moduli space is similar to moduli spaces considered by Abbondandolo-Schwarz and Abouzaid for Tonelli Hamiltonians. The Hamiltonians we consider are not Tonelli, but rather of ``contact-type'' in the symplectization end.

Adiabatic compactness for holomorphic curves with boundary on nearby Lagrangians

In his 1989 paper, Floer established a connection between holomorphic strips with boundary on a Lagrangian $L$ and a small Hamiltonian push-off $L_{f}$, and gradient flow lines for the function $f$. The present paper studies the compactness theory for holomorphic curves $u_{n}$ whose boundary components lie on Hamiltonian perturbations $L_{n}^{1},\dots,L^{N}_{n}$ of a fixed Lagrangian $L$, where each sequence of nearby Lagrangians $L^{j}_{n}$ converges to $L$ as $n\to\infty$. Generalizing earlier work of Oh, Fukaya, Ekholm, and Zhu, we prove that the limit of a sequence of such holomorphic maps is a configuration consisting of holomorphic curves with boundary on $L$ joined by gradient flow lines connecting points on the boundary of holomorphic pieces. The key new result is an exponential estimate analyzing the interface between the holomorphic parts and the gradient flow line parts.
