Skein algebras and quantized Coulomb branches

To a compact oriented surface of genus at most one with boundary, we associate a quantized $K$-theoretic Coulomb branch in the sense of Braverman, Finkelberg, and Nakajima. In the case where the surface is a three- or four-holed sphere or a one-holed torus, we describe a relationship between this quantized Coulomb branch and the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of the surface. We formulate a general conjecture relating these algebras.

Dualities of $K$-theoretic Coulomb branches from a once-punctured torus

We consider the quantized $\mathrm{SL}_2$-character variety of a once-punctured torus. We show that this quantized algebra has three $\mathbb{Z}_2$-invariant subalgebras that are isomorphic to quantized $K$-theoretic Coulomb branches in the sense of Braverman, Finkelberg, and Nakajima. These subalgebras are permuted by the $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ mapping class group action. Our results confirm various predictions from the physics literature about 4d $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ theories and their dualities.

Monoidal categorification of genus zero skein algebras

We prove a conjecture of the first and third named authors relating the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of a genus zero surface with boundary to a quantized $K$-theoretic Coulomb branch. As a consequence, we see that our skein algebra arises as the Grothendieck ring of the bounded derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Braverman-Finkelberg-Nakajima variety of triples with monoidal structure defined by the convolution product. We thus give a monoidal categorification of the skein algebra, partially answering a question posed by D. Thurston.

Stability conditions and Teichmüller space

We consider a 3-Calabi-Yau triangulated category associated to an ideal triangulation of a marked bordered surface. Using the theory of harmonic maps between Riemann surfaces, we construct a natural map from a component of the space of Bridgeland stability conditions on this category to the enhanced Teichmüller space of the surface. We describe a relationship between the central charges of objects in the category and shear coordinates on the Teichmüller space.

On the wall-crossing formula for quadratic differentials

We prove an analytic version of the Kontsevich-Soibelman wall-crossing formula describing how the number of finite-length trajectories of a quadratic differential jumps as the differential is varied. We characterize certain birational automorphisms of an algebraic torus appearing in this wall-crossing formula using Fock-Goncharov coordinates. As an application, we compute the Stokes automorphisms for the Voros symbols appearing in the exact WKB analysis of Schrödinger's equation.

Quantization of canonical bases and the quantum symplectic double

We describe a natural $q$-deformation of Fock and Goncharov's canonical basis for the algebra of regular functions on a cluster variety associated to a quiver of type $A$. We then describe an extension of this construction involving a cluster variety called the symplectic double.

Stability conditions, cluster varieties, and Riemann-Hilbert problems from surfaces

We consider two interesting spaces associated to a quiver with potential: a space of stability conditions and a cluster variety. In the case where the quiver with potential arises from an ideal triangulation of a marked bordered surface, we construct a natural map from a dense subset of the space of stability conditions to the cluster variety. Using this construction, we give solutions to a family of Riemann-Hilbert problems arising in Donaldson-Thomas theory.

Voros symbols as cluster coordinates

We show that the Borel sums of the Voros symbols considered in the theory of exact WKB analysis arise naturally as Fock-Goncharov coordinates of framed $PGL_2(\mathbb{C})$-local systems on a marked bordered surface. Using this result, we show that these Borel sums can be meromorphically continued to any point of $\mathbb{C}^*$, and we prove an asymptotic property of the monodromy map introduced in collaboration with Tom Bridgeland.

The monodromy of meromorphic projective structures

We study projective structures on a surface having poles of prescribed orders. We obtain a monodromy map from a complex manifold parameterising such structures to the stack of framed $\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ local systems on the associated marked bordered surface. We prove that the image of this map is contained in the union of the domains of the cluster charts. We discuss a number of open questions concerning this monodromy map.

Categorified canonical bases and framed BPS states

We consider a cluster variety associated to a triangulated surface without punctures. The algebra of regular functions on this cluster variety possesses a canonical vector space basis parametrized by certain measured laminations on the surface. To each lamination, we associate a graded vector space, and we prove that the graded dimension of this vector space gives the expansion in cluster coordinates of the corresponding basis element. We discuss the relation to framed BPS states in $\mathcal{N}=2$ field theories of class $\mathcal{S}$.

The geometry of cluster varieties from surfaces

Cluster varieties are geometric objects that have recently found applications in several areas of mathematics and mathematical physics. This thesis studies the geometry of a large class of cluster varieties associated to compact oriented surfaces with boundary. The main original contribution of this thesis is to develop the properties of a particular kind of cluster variety called the symplectic double. We show that the symplectic double is birational to a certain moduli space of local systems associated to a doubled surface. We define a version of the notion of measured lamination on such a surface and prove that the space of all such laminations is a tropicalization of the symplectic double. We describe a canonical map from this space of laminations into the algebra of rational functions on the symplectic double. The second main contribution of this thesis is a proof of Fock and Goncharov's duality conjectures for quantum cluster varieties associated to a disk with finitely many marked points on its boundary. These duality conjectures identify a canonical set of elements in the quantized algebra of functions on a cluster variety satisfying a number of special properties.

Stability conditions and cluster varieties from quivers of type $A$

We describe the relationship between two spaces associated to a quiver with potential. The first is a complex manifold parametrizing Bridgeland stability conditions on a triangulated category, and the second is a cluster variety with a natural Poisson structure. For quivers of type $A$, we construct a local biholomorphism from the space of stability conditions to the cluster variety. The existence of this map follows from results of Sibuya in the classical theory of ordinary differential equations.

Laminations from the symplectic double

Let $S$ be a compact oriented surface with boundary together with finitely many marked points on the boundary, and let $S^\circ$ be the same surface equipped with the opposite orientation. We consider the double $S_\mathcal{D}$ obtained by gluing the surfaces $S$ and $S^\circ$ along corresponding boundary components. We define a notion of lamination on the double and construct coordinates on the space of all such laminations. We show that this space of laminations is a tropical version of the symplectic double introduced by Fock and Goncharov. There is a canonical pairing between our laminations and the positive real points of the symplectic double. We derive an explicit formula for this pairing using the $F$-polynomials of Fomin and Zelevinsky.

A duality map for quantum cluster varieties from surfaces

We define a canonical map from a certain space of laminations on a punctured surface into the quantized algebra of functions on a cluster variety. We show that this map satisfies a number of special properties conjectured by Fock and Goncharov. Our construction is based on the "quantum trace" map introduced by Bonahon and Wong.
