Cassini sets in taxicab geometry

Given two points $p$ and $q$ in the plane and a nonnegative number $r$, the Cassini oval is the set of points $x$ that satisfy $d(x, p) d(x, q) = r^2$. In this paper, we study this set using the taxicab metric. We find that these sets have characteristics that are qualitatively similar to their Euclidean counterparts while also reflecting the underlying taxicab structure. We provide a geometric description of these sets and provide a characterization in terms of intersections and unions of a restricted family of such sets analogous to that found recently for taxicab Apollonian sets.

A Poincar\'{e} ball model for taxicab hyperbolic geometry

Taxicab space is a modification of Euclidean space that uses an alternative notion of distance. Similarly, the Poincar\'{e} ball is a model of hyperbolic geometry that consists of a subset of Euclidean space with an alternative notion of distance. In this paper, we merge these two variations to create a taxicab version of the Poincar\'{e} ball. We determine the isometry group for this new space and show that this space is hyperbolic in the sense of Gromov.

A new perspective on taxicab conic sections

We explore taxicab conic sections from the perspective of slicing taxicab cones by planes, as opposed to the more well-studied approach from the perspective of distance formulations. After establishing a significant amount of structural framework, a complete characterization of the resulting taxicab conic sections is established, and a number of special cases are explored.

Further Study on Domains and Quasihyperbolic Distances

We establish constructive geometric tools for determining when a domain is $L^s$-averaging and obtain upper and lower bounds for the $L^s$-integrals of the quasihyperbolic distance. We also construct examples which are helpful to understand our geometric tools and the relationship between $p$-Poincaré domains and $L^s$-averaging domains. Finally, finite unions of $L^s(μ)$-averaging domains are explored.

Bach Flow on Homogeneous Products

Qualitative behavior of Bach flow is established on compact four-dimensional locally homogeneous product manifolds. This is achieved by lifting to the homogeneous universal cover and, in most cases, capitalizing on the resultant group structure. The resulting system of ordinary differential equations is carefully analyzed on a case-by-case basis, with explicit solutions found in some cases. Limiting behavior of the metric and the curvature are determined in all cases. The behavior on quotients of $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{S}^3$ proves to be the most challenging and interesting.

Apollonian sets in taxicab geometry

Fix two points $p$ and $q$ in the plane and a positive number $k \neq 1$. A result credited to Apollonius of Perga states that the set of points $x$ that satisfy $d(x, p)/d(x, q) = k$ forms a circle. In this paper we study the analogous set in taxicab geometry. We find that while Apollonian sets are not taxicab circles, more complicated Apollonian sets can be characterized in terms of simpler ones.

Uniqueness for Some Higher-Order Geometric Flows

We show that solutions to certain higher-order intrinsic geometric flows on a compact manifold, including some flows generated by the ambient obstruction tensor, are unique. With the goal of providing a complete self-contained proof, details surrounding map covariant derivatives and a careful application of the DeTurck trick are provided.

Short-time existence for some higher-order geometric flows

We establish short-time existence and regularity for higher-order flows generated by a class of polynomial natural tensors that, after an adjustment by the Lie derivative of the metric with respect to a suitable vector field, have strongly parabolic linearizations. We apply this theorem to flows by powers of the Laplacian of the Ricci tensor, and to flows generated by the ambient obstruction tensor. As a special case, we prove short-time existence for a type of Bach flow.

Boundary Regularity for Conformally Compact Einstein Metrics in Even Dimensions

We study boundary regularity for conformally compact Einstein metrics in even dimensions by generalizing the ideas of Michael Anderson. Our method of approach is to view the vanishing of the Ambient Obstruction tensor as an nth order system of equations for the components of a compactification of the given metric. This, together with boundary conditions that the compactification is shown to satisfy provide enough information to apply classical boundary regularity results. These results then provide local and global versions of finite boundary regularity for the components of the compactification.
