Action and topological density carried by Abelian monopoles in finite temperature pure SU(2) gauge theory: an analysis using RG smoothing

We test a new parametrization of a suitably truncated classically perfect action for SU(2) pure gauge theory with respect to self-consistency and locate the deconfinement transition on a 12^3X4 lattice. Using the technique of smoothing (blocking followed by inverse blocking) we demonstrate clustering of action and topological charge density. Concentrating on the Abelian monopoles found in smoothed configurations after Abelian projection from the maximally Abelian gauge, we present evidence for their role as carriers of non-Abelian action and topological charge.

Towards a Topological Mechanism of Quark Confinement

We report on new analyses of the topological and chiral vacuum structure of four-dimensional QCD on the lattice. Correlation functions as well as visualization of monopole currents in the maximally Abelian gauge emphasize their topological origin and gauge invariant characterization. The (anti)selfdual character of strong vacuum fluctuations is reveiled by smoothing. In full QCD, (anti)instanton positions are also centers of the local chiral condensate and quark charge density. Most results turn out generically independent of the action and the cooling/smoothing method.

Topological Content of the Electroweak Sphaleron on the Lattice

3D electroweak sphalerons on the lattice are used as test configurations for definitions of various topological defects. In the maximally Abelian gauge they are shown to contain a symmetric array of Abelian monopoles and anti-monopoles connected by two kinds of Abelian vortex strings. Gauge-invariant lattice definitions of the Nambu monopole and the Z-vortex string are formulated which correspond to Abelian projection from the unitary gauge. The sphalerons contain in their core just one (non-Abelian) Nambu monopole-anti-monopole pair (connected by a Z-string) in an unstable saddle point bound state. This provides an example for the monopole-pair unbinding mechanism expected to work at the electroweak phase transition. The definitions of defects developed here will be used in future studies of topological aspects of this transition.

Modelling the QCD Phase Transition with an Effective Lagrangian of Light and Massive Hadrons

The temperature dependence of quark and gluon condensates in QCD as precursor of the chiral and deconfining phase transition is modelled with a conformally extended non-linear sigma-model including broken chiral and scale invariance. The model is further enlarged by including (free) heavier hadrons. Within this frame we then study the interplay of QCD scale breaking effects and heavier hadrons in chiral symmetry restoration.

Topology at the Deconfinement Transition Uncovered by Inverse Blocking in SU(2) Pure Gauge Theory with Fixed Point Action

Renormalization group transformations as discussed recently in deriving fixed point actions are used to analyse the vacuum structure near to the deconfinement temperature. Monte Carlo configurations are generated using the fixed point action. We compare equilibrium configurations with configurations obtained by inverse blocking from a coarser lattice. The absence of short range vacuum fluctuations in the latter does not influence the string tension. For the inversely blocked configurations we find the following: (i) the topological susceptibility chi_top is consistent with the phenomenological value in the confinement phase, (ii) chi_top drops across the deconfinement transition, (iii) density and size of instantons are estimated, (iv) the topological density is found to be correlated to Abelian monopole currents and (v) the density of spacelike monopole currents becomes a confinement order parameter.

Topology without cooling: instantons and monopoles near to deconfinement

In an attempt to describe the change of topological structure of pure SU(2) gauge theory near deconfinement a renormalization group inspired method is tested. Instead of cooling, blocking and subsequent inverse blocking is applied to Monte Carlo configurations to capture topological features at a well-defined scale. We check that this procedure largely conserves long range physics like string tension. UV fluctuations and lattice artefacts are removed which otherwise spoil topological charge density and Abelian monopole currents. We report the behaviour of topological susceptibility and monopole current densities across the deconfinement transition and relate the two faces of topology to each other. First results of a cluster analysis are described.

Hot electroweak matter near to the endpoint of the phase transition

The electroweak phase transition is investigated near to its endpoint in the framework of an effective three-dimensional model. We measure the very weak interface tension with the tunneling correlation length method. First results for the mass spectrum and the corresponding wave functions in the symmetric phase are presented.

The endpoint of the electroweak phase transition

The 3d SU(2)-Higgs model is used to find the critical Higgs mass above which the first order phase transition ends. One method is focused on the disappearance of the two-state signal of the scalar condensate (vanishing of the latent heat). Another method is based on the analysis of Lee-Yang zeroes of the partition function which allows to characterise the change from first order transition into an analytical crossover.

Where the electroweak phase transition ends

We give a more precise characterisation of the end of the electroweak phase transition in the framework of the effective 3d SU(2)--Higgs lattice model than has been given before. The model has now been simulated at gauge couplings beta_G=12 and 16 for Higgs masses M_H^*=70, 74, 76 and 80 GeV up to lattices 96^3 and the data have been used for reweighting. The breakdown of finite volume scaling of the Lee-Yang zeroes indicates the change from a first order transition to a crossover at lambda_3/g_3^2=0.102(2) in rough agreement with results of Karsch et al (hep-lat/9608087) at β_G=9 and smaller lattices. The infinite volume extrapolation of the discontinuity Delta < phi^+ phi > /g_3^2 turns out to be zero at lambda_3/g_3^2=0.107(2) being an upper limit. We comment on the limitations of the second method.

Pion and Rho Structure Functions from Lattice QCD

We calculate the lower moments of the deep-inelastic structure functions of the pion and the rho meson on the lattice. Of particular interest to us are the spin-dependent structure functions of the rho. The calculations are done with Wilson fermions and for three values of the quark mass, so that we can perform an extrapolation to the chiral limit.

The Drell-Yan process and Deep Inelastic Scattering from the lattice

We report on measurements of the h_1 structure function, relevant to calculating cross-sections for the Drell-Yan process. This is a quantity which can not be measured in Deep Inelastic Scattering, it gives additional information on the spin carried by the valence quarks, as well as insights on how relativistic the quarks are.

Perturbative renormalization of bilinear quark and gluon operators

The renormalisation constants for local bilinear quark operators are calculated using the Sheikholeslami-Wohlert improved action. In addition we compute the renormalisation constant of the leading gluon operator for different group representations and discuss the mixing of the operators E^2 and B^2.

A Preliminary Lattice Study of the Glue in the Nucleon

About half the mass of a hadron is given from gluonic contributions. In this talk we calculate the chromo-electric and chromo-magnetic components of the nucleon mass. These computations are numerically difficult due to gluon field ultra-violet fluctuations. Nevertheless a high statistics feasibility run using quenched Wilson fermions seems to show reasonable signals.

Physics of the Electroweak Phase Transition at M_H <= 70 GeV in a 3-dimensional SU(2)-Higgs Model

Physical parameters of the electroweak phase transition in a 3d effective lattice SU(2)-Higgs model are presented. The phase transition temperatures, latent heats and continuum condensate discontinuities are measured at Higgs masses of about 70 and 35 GeV. Masses and Higgs condensates are compared to perturbation theory in the broken phase. In the symmetric phase bound states and the static force are determined.
