Topological Structure of the QCD Vacuum Revealed by Overlap Fermions

Overlap fermions preserve a remnant of chiral symmetry on the lattice. They are a powerful tool to investigate the topological structure of the vacuum of Yang-Mills theory and full QCD. Recent results concerning the localization of topological charge and the localization and local chirality of the overlap eigenmodes are reported. The charge distribution is radically different, if a spectral cut-off for the Dirac eigenmodes is applied. The density q(x) is changing from the scale-a charge density (with full lattice resolution) to the ultraviolet filtered charge density. The scale-a density, computed on the Linux cluster of LRZ, has a singular, sign-coherent global structure of co-dimension 1 first described by the Kentucky group. We stress, however, the cluster properties of the UV filtered topological density resembling the instanton picture. The spectral cut-off can be mapped to a bosonic smearing procedure. The UV filtered field strength reveals a high degree of (anti)selfduality at "hot spots" of the action. The fermionic eigenmodes show a high degree of local chirality. The lowest modes are seen to be localized in low-dimensional space-time regions.

QCD Lambda parameter from Landau-gauge gluon and ghost correlations

We utilise a recently developed minimal MOM scheme to determine the QCD Lambda parameter from the gluon and ghost propagators in lattice Landau gauge. We discuss uncertainties in the analysis and report our preliminary zero and two flavour results, which are r_0*LambdaMS^{(0)}=0.62(1) and r_0*LambdaMS^{(2)}=0.60(3)(2), with the second error due to an extrapolation uncertainty.

A New Approach to the Gluon Structure Function

We calculate the gluon structure function of a color dipole in a new approach evaluating the matrix elements of SU(2) gluon field operators separated along a direction close to the light cone. As vacuum state in the pure glue sector, we use a variational ground state of the near-light-cone Hamiltonian. With a mean momentum fraction of the gluons fixed to the "experimental value" in a proton, the resulting gluon structure function for a dipole state with four links is compared qualitatively to the NLO \emph{MRST} 2002 parameterization at $Q^2=1.5 \mathrm{GeV}^2$.

Two-point functions of quenched lattice QCD in Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory. (I) The ghost propagator in Landau gauge

This is the first of a series of two papers on the perturbative computation of the ghost and gluon propagators in SU(3) Lattice Gauge Theory. Our final aim is to eventually compare with results from lattice simulations in order to enlight the genuinely non-perturbative content of the latter. By means of Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory we compute the ghost propagator in Landau gauge up to three loops. We present results in the infinite volume and $a \to 0$ limits, based on a general strategy that we discuss in detail.

The Landau gauge gluon propagator in 4D SU(2) lattice gauge theory revisited: Gribov copies and scaling properties

Lattice results for the gluon propagator in SU(2) pure gauge theory obtained on large lattices are presented. Simulated annealing is used throughout to fix the Landau gauge. We concentrate on checks for Gribov copy effects and for scaling properties. Our findings are similar to the ones in the SU(3) case, supporting the decoupling-type infrared behaviour of the gluon propagator.

Phase structure of thermal lattice QCD with N_f=2 twisted mass Wilson fermions

We present numerical results for the phase diagram of lattice QCD at finite temperature in the formulation with twisted mass Wilson fermions and a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action. Our simulations are performed on lattices with temporal extent N_τ=8, and lattice coupling βranging from strong coupling to the scaling domain. Covering a wide range in the space spanned by the lattice coupling βand the hopping and twisted mass parameters κand μ, respectively, we obtain a comprehensive picture of the rich phase structure of the lattice theory. In particular, we verify the existence of an Aoki phase in the strong coupling region and the realisation of the Sharpe-Singleton scenario at intermediate couplings. In the weak coupling region we identify the phase boundary for the physical finite temperature phase transition/crossover. Its shape in the three-dimensional parameter space is consistent with Creutz's conjecture of a cone-shaped thermal transition surface.

Wilson loops in very high order lattice perturbation theory

We calculate Wilson loops of various sizes up to loop order $n=20$ for lattice sizes of $L^4 (L=4, 6, 8, 12)$ using the technique of Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory in quenched QCD. This allows to investigate the behaviour of the perturbative series at high orders. We discuss three models to estimate the perturbative series: a renormalon inspired fit, a heuristic fit based on an assumed power-law singularity and boosted perturbation theory. We have found differences in the behavior of the perturbative series for smaller and larger Wilson loops at moderate $n$. A factorial growth of the coefficients could not be confirmed up to $n=20$. From Monte Carlo measured plaquette data and our perturbative result we estimate a value of the gluon condensate $<\fracαπGG>$.

The lattice ghost propagator in Landau gauge up to three loops using Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory

We complete our high-accuracy studies of the lattice ghost propagator in Landau gauge in Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory up to three loops. We present a systematic strategy which allows to extract with sufficient precision the non-logarithmic parts of logarithmically divergent quantities as a function of the propagator momentum squared in the infinite-volume and $a\to 0$ limits. We find accurate coincidence with the one-loop result for the ghost self-energy known from standard Lattice Perturbation Theory and improve our previous estimate for the two-loop constant contribution to the ghost self-energy in Landau gauge. Our results for the perturbative ghost propagator are compared with Monte Carlo measurements of the ghost propagator performed by the Berlin Humboldt university group which has used the exponential relation between potentials and gauge links.

Electric-magnetic asymmetry of the A^2 condensate and the phases of Yang-Mills theory

We study the finite-temperature behavior of the A^2 condensate in the Landau gauge of SU(2) Yang--Mills theory on the lattice in a wide range of temperatures. The asymmetry between the electric (temporal) and magnetic (spatial) components of this unconventional dimension-2 condensate is a convenient ultraviolet-finite quantity which possesses, as we demonstrate, unexpected properties. The low-temperature behavior of the condensate asymmetry suggests that the mass of the lowest thermal excitation in the condensate is unexpectedly low, about 200 MeV, which is much smaller than the glueball mass. The asymmetry is peaking at the phase transition, becoming a monotonically decreasing function in the deconfinement phase. A symmetric point is reached in the deconfinement phase at a temperature approximately equal twice the critical temperature. The behavior of the electric-magnetic asymmetry of the condensate separates the phase diagram of Yang-Mills theory into three regions. We suggest that these regions are associated with the condensed, liquid and gaseous states of the confining gluonic objects, the Abelian monopoles.

Gluon Structure Function of a Color Dipole in the Light-Cone Limit of Lattice QCD

We calculate the gluon structure function of a color dipole in near-light-cone SU(2) lattice QCD as a function of $x_B$. The quark and antiquark are external non-dynamical degrees of freedom which act as sources of the gluon string configuration defining the dipole. We compute the color dipole matrix element of transversal chromo-electric and chromo-magnetic field operators separated along a direction close to the light cone, the Fourier transform of which is the gluon structure function. As vacuum state in the pure glue sector, we use a variational ground state of the near-light-cone Hamiltonian. We derive a recursion relation for the gluon structure function on the lattice similar to the perturbative DGLAP equation. It depends on the number of transversal links assembling the Schwinger string of the dipole. Fixing the mean momentum fraction of the gluons to the "experimental value" in a proton, we compare our gluon structure function for a dipole state with four links with the NLO \emph{MRST} 2002 and the \emph{CTEQAB-0} parameterizations at $Q^2=1.5 \mathrm{GeV}^2$. Within the systematic uncertainty we find rather good agreement. We also discuss the low $x_B$ behavior of the gluon structure function in our model calculation.

Lattice gluodynamics computation of Landau-gauge Green's functions in the deep infrared

We present recent results for the Landau-gauge gluon and ghost propagators in SU(3) lattice gluodynamics obtained on a sequence of lattices with linear extension ranging from L=64 to L=96 at $β= 5.70$, thus reaching "deep infrared" momenta down to 75 MeV. Our gauge-fixing procedure essentially uses a simulated annealing technique which allows us to reach gauge-functional values closer to the global maxima than standard approaches do. Our results are consistent with the so-called decoupling solutions found for Dyson-Schwinger and functional renormalization group equations.

The dyonic picture of topological objects in the deconfined phase

In the deconfinement phase of quenched SU(2) Yang-Mills theory the spectrum and localization properties of the eigenmodes of the overlap Dirac operator with antiperiodic boundary conditions are strongly dependent on the sign of the average Polyakov loop, $ $. For $ > 0$ a gap appears with only few, highly localized topological zero and near-zero modes separated from the rest of the spectrum. Instead of a gap, for $ < 0$ a high spectral density of relatively delocalized near-zero modes is observed. In an ensemble of positive $ $, the same difference of the spectrum appears under a change of fermionic boundary conditions. We argue that this effect and other properties of near-zero modes can be explained through the asymmetric properties and the different abundance of dyons and antidyons -- topological objects also known to appear, however in a symmetric form, in the confinement phase at $T < T_c$ as constituents of calorons with maximally nontrivial holonomy.

The topological structure of SU(2) gluodynamics at T > 0 : an analysis using the Symanzik action and Neuberger overlap fermions

We study SU(2) gluodynamics at finite temperature on both sides of the deconfining phase transition. We create the lattice ensembles using the tree-level tadpole-improved Symanzik action. The Neuberger overlap Dirac operator is used to determine the following three aspects of vacuum structure: (i) The topological susceptibility is evaluated at various temperatures across the phase transition, (ii) the overlap fermion spectral density is determined and found to depend on the Polyakov loop above the phase transition and (iii) the corresponding localization properties of low-lying eigenmodes are investigated. Finally, we compare with zero temperature results.

Coulomb-gauge ghost and gluon propagators in SU(3) lattice Yang-Mills theory

We study the momentum dependence of the ghost propagator and of the space and time components of the gluon propagator at equal time in pure SU(3) lattice Coulomb gauge theory carrying out a joint analysis of data collected independently at RCNP Osaka and Humboldt University Berlin. We focus on the scaling behavior of these propagators at beta=5.8,...,6.2 and apply a matching technique to relate the data for the different lattice cutoffs. Thereby, lattice artifacts are found to be rather strong for both instantaneous gluon propagators at large momentum. As a byproduct we obtain the respective lattice scale dependences a(beta) for the transversal gluon and the ghost propagator which indeed run faster with beta than two-loop running, but slightly slower than what is known from the Necco-Sommer analysis of the heavy quark potential. The abnormal a(beta) dependence as determined from the instantaneous time-time gluon propagator, D_{44}, remains a problem, though. The role of residual gauge-fixing influencing D_{44} is discussed.

Higher-loop gluon and ghost propagators in Landau gauge from numerical stochastic perturbation theory

We present higher loop results for the gluon and ghost propagator in Landau gauge on the lattice calculated in numerical stochastic perturbation theory. We make predictions for the perturbative content of those propagators as function of the lattice momenta for finite lattices. To find out their nonperturbative contributions, the logarithmic definition of the gauge fields and the corresponding Faddeev-Popov operator have to be implemented in the Monte Carlo simulations.

More about the new non-selfdual axially symmetric SU(2) calorons

We describe the recently found non-selfdual axially symmetric caloron solutions of SU(2) gluodynamics with trivial holonomy. We present the local Polyakov loop together with the action and topological charge density. Different from the well-known KvBLL calorons, the calorons considered here are composed out of pseudoparticle constituents carrying integer topological charge. The loci of Polyakov loop L = -1 correspond to the loci of Higgs field zeroes for corresponding solutions of the Yang-Mills Higgs system. For certain parameters pointlike monopole pairs turn into rings.

The finite-temperature phase structure of lattice QCD with twisted-mass Wilson fermions

We report progress in our exploration of the finite-temperature phase structure of two-flavour lattice QCD with twisted-mass Wilson fermions and a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action for a temporal lattice size N_τ=8. Extending our investigations to a wider region of parameter space we gain a global view of the rich phase structure. We identify the finite temperature transition/crossover for a non-vanishing twisted-mass parameter in the neighbourhood of the zero-temperature critical line at sufficiently high β. Our findings are consistent with Creutz's conjecture of a conical shape of the finite temperature transition surface. Comparing with NLO lattice chiral perturbation theory we achieve an improved understanding of this shape.
