Polar phonons and magnetic excitations in the antiferromagnet CoF$_2$

The coupling between antiferromagnetic spins and infrared-active phonons in solids is responsible for many intriguing phenomena and is a field of intense research with extensive potential applications in the modern devices based on antiferromagnetic spintronics and phononics. Insulating rutile antiferromagnetic crystal CoF$_2$ is one of the model materials for studying nonlinear magnetophononics due to the strong spin-lattice coupling as a result of the orbitally degenerate ground state of Co$^{2+}$ ions manifested in the plethora of static and induced piezomagnetic effects. Here we report results on the complete infrared spectroscopy study of lattice and magnetic dynamics in CoF$_2$ in a wide temperature range and their careful analysis. We observed that infrared-active phonons demonstrate frequency shifts at the antiferromagnetic ordering. Furthermore, using first-principles calculations, we examined the lattice dynamics and disclosed that these frequency shifts are rather due to the spin-phonon coupling than geometrical lattice effects. Next we found that the low-frequency dielectric permittivity demonstrates distinct changes at the antiferromagnetic ordering due to the spontaneous magnetodielectric effect caused by the behavior of infrared-active phonons. In addition, we have observed magnetic excitations in the infrared spectra and identified their magnetodipole origin. To strengthen our conclusions, we analyze the theoretical phonon-magnon coupling overall phonons at the $Γ$ point. We conclude that the largest effect comes from the $A_{1g}$ and $B_{2g}$ Raman-active modes. As such, our results establish a solid basis for further investigations and more deeper understanding of the coupling of phonons with spins and magnetic excitations in antiferromagnets.

Strong terahertz third-harmonic generation by kinetic heavy quasiparticles in CaRuO$_3$

We report on time-resolved nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy of a strongly correlated ruthenate, CaRuO$_3$, as a function of temperature, frequency and terahertz field strength. Third-harmonic radiation for frequencies up to 2.1 THz is observed evidently at low temperatures below 80 K, where the low-frequency linear dynamical response deviates from the Drude model and a coherent heavy quasiparticle band emerges by strong correlations associated with the Hund's coupling.Phenomenologically, by taking an experimentally observed frequency-dependent scattering rate, the deviation of the field driven kinetics from the Drude behavior is reconciled in a time-dependent Boltzmann description, which allows an attribution of the observed third-harmonic generation to the terahertz field driven nonlinear kinetics of the heavy quasiparticles.

Effective rectification of THz electromagnetic fields in a ferrimagnetic iron garnet

It is found that single-cycle THz electromagnetic fields efficiently excite a GHz spin resonance mode in ferrimagnetic Tm$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$, despite the near absence of GHz spectral components in the exciting THz pulse. By analyzing how the efficiency of excitation depends on the orientation and strength of the THz electric field, we show that it can be explained in terms of the nonlinear THz inverse Cotton-Mouton effect. Here, the THz electric field gets effectively rectified and acts on the ferrimagnetic spins as a uni-polar effective magnetic field pulse. This interpretation is confirmed by a theoretical model based on the phenomenological analysis of the effective magnetic field, combined with the equations of motion derived from the effective Lagrangian for a ferrimagnet. Moreover, by using the outcome of two-dimensional THz spectroscopy, we conjecture a quantum-mechanical interpretation of the observed effect in terms of stimulated Raman scattering of THz photons by the crystal-field split f-f electronic transitions of Tm$^{3+}$.

Empowering Control of Antiferromagnets by THz-induced Spin Coherence

Finding efficient and ultrafast ways to control antiferromagnets is believed to be instrumental in unlocking their potential for magnetic devices operating at THz frequencies. Still, it is challenged by the absence of net magnetization in the ground state. Here, we show that the magnetization emerging from a state of coherent spin precession in antiferromagnetic iron borate FeBO$_3$ can be used to enable the nonlinear coupling of light to another, otherwise weakly susceptible, mode of spin precession. This nonlinear mechanism can facilitate conceptually new ways of controlling antiferromagnetism.

High-order nonlinear terahertz probing of the two-band superconductor MgB$_2$: Third- and fifth-order harmonic generation

We report on high-order harmonic generation in the two-band superconductor MgB$_2$ driven by intense terahertz electromagnetic pulses. Third- and fifth-order harmonics are resolved in time domain and investigated as a function of temperature and in applied magnetic fields crossing the superconducting phase boundary. The high-order harmonics in the superconducting phase reflects nonequilibrium dynamics of the superconducting order parameter in MgB$_2$, which is probed via nonlinear coupling to the terahertz field. The observed temperature and field dependence of the nonlinear response allows to establish the superconducting phase diagram.

Noncollinear electro-optic sampling detection of terahertz pulses in a LiNbO$_3$ crystal with avoiding the effect of intrinsic birefringence

We propose and experimentally prove efficient high-resolution electro-optic sampling measurement of broadband terahertz waveforms in a LiNbO$_3$ crystal in the configuration with the probe laser beam propagating along the optical axis of the crystal. This configuration allows one to avoid the detrimental effect of strong intrinsic birefringence of LiNbO$_3$ without any additional optical elements. To achieve velocity matching of the terahertz wave and the probe beam, the terahertz wave is introduced into the crystal through a Si prism at the Cherenkov angle to the probe beam. The workability of the scheme at different wavelengths of the probe optical beam (800 and 1550 nm) is demonstrated.

Excitation and Detection of THz Coherent Spin Waves in Antiferromagnetic $\mathrm{α-Fe_2O_3}$

The efficiency of ultrafast excitation of spins in antiferromagnetic $\mathrm{α-Fe_{2}O_{3}}$ using nearly single-cycle THz pulse is studied as a function of the polarization of the THz pulse and the sample temperature. Above the Morin point the most efficient excitation is achieved when the magnetic field of the THz pulse is perpendicular to the antiferromagnetically coupled spins. Using the experimental results and equations of motion for spins, we show that the mechanism of the spin excitation above and below the Morin point relies on magnetic-dipole interaction of the THz magnetic field with spins and the efficiency of the coupling is proportional to the time derivative of the magnetic field.

THz Field-induced Spin Dynamics in Ferrimagnetic Iron Garnets

THz magnetization dynamics is excited in ferrimagnetic thulium iron garnet with a picosecond, single-cycle magnetic field pulse and seen as a high-frequency modulation of the magneto-optical Faraday effect. Data analysis combined with numerical modelling and evaluation of the effective Lagrangian allow us to conclude that the dynamics corresponds to the exchange mode excited by Zeeman interaction of the THz field with the antiferromagnetically coupled spins. We argue that THz-pump IR-probe experiments on ferrimagnets offer a unique tool for quantitative studies of dynamics and mechanisms to control antiferromagnetically coupled spins.
