The conjugacy problem in $GL(n,Z)$

We present a new algorithm that, given two matrices in $GL(n,Q)$, decides if they are conjugate in $GL(n,Z)$ and, if so, determines a conjugating matrix. We also give an algorithm to construct a generating set for the centraliser in $GL(n,Z)$ of a matrix in $GL(n,Q)$. We do this by reducing these problems respectively to the isomorphism and automorphism group problems for certain modules over rings of the form $\mathcal O_K[y]/(y^l)$, where $\mathcal O_K$ is the maximal order of an algebraic number field and $l \in N$, and then provide algorithms to solve the latter. The algorithms are practical and our implementations are publicly available in Magma.

Algorithms for linear groups of finite rank

Let $G$ be a finitely generated solvable-by-finite linear group. We present an algorithm to compute the torsion-free rank of $G$ and a bound on the Prüfer rank of $G$. This yields in turn an algorithm to decide whether a finitely generated subgroup of $G$ has finite index. The algorithms are implemented in MAGMA for groups over algebraic number fields.

Testing isomorphism of graded algebras

We present a new algorithm to decide isomorphism between finite graded algebras. For a broad class of nilpotent Lie algebras, we demonstrate that it runs in time polynomial in the order of the input algebras. We introduce heuristics that often dramatically improve the performance of the algorithm and report on an implementation in Magma.

Regular orbits of symmetric and alternating groups

Given a finite group $G$ and a faithful irreducible $FG$-module $V$ where $F$ has prime order, does $G$ have a regular orbit on $V$? This problem is equivalent to determining which primitive permutation groups of affine type have a base of size 2. In this paper, we classify the pairs $(G,V)$ for which $G$ has a regular orbit on $V$ where $G$ is a covering group of a symmetric or alternating group and $V$ is a faithful irreducible $FG$-module such that the order of $F$ is prime and divides the order of $G$.

Regular orbits of sporadic simple groups

Given a finite group $G$ and a faithful irreducible $FG$-module $V$ where $F$ has prime order, does $G$ have a regular orbit on $V$? This problem is equivalent to determining which primitive permutation groups of affine type have a base of size 2. Let $G$ be a covering group of an almost simple group whose socle $T$ is sporadic, and let $V$ be a faithful irreducible $FG$-module where $F$ has prime order dividing $|G|$. We classify the pairs $(G,V)$ for which $G$ has no regular orbit on $V$, and determine the minimal base size of $G$ in its action on $V$. To obtain this classification, for each non-trivial $g\in G/Z(G)$, we compute the minimal number of $T$-conjugates of $g$ generating $\langle T,g\rangle$.

Code loops in dimension at most 8

Code loops are certain Moufang $2$-loops constructed from doubly even binary codes that play an important role in the construction of local subgroups of sporadic groups. More precisely, code loops are central extensions of the group of order $2$ by an elementary abelian $2$-group $V$ in the variety of loops such that their squaring map, commutator map and associator map are related by combinatorial polarization and the associator map is a trilinear alternating form. Using existing classifications of trilinear alternating forms over the field of $2$ elements, we enumerate code loops of dimension $d=\mathrm{dim}(V)\le 8$ (equivalently, of order $2^{d+1}\le 512$) up to isomorphism. There are $767$ code loops of order $128$, and $80826$ of order $256$, and $937791557$ of order $512$.

Recognition of finite exceptional groups of Lie type

Let $q$ be a prime power and let $G$ be an absolutely irreducible subgroup of $GL_d(F)$, where $F$ is a finite field of the same characteristic as $\F_q$, the field of $q$ elements. Assume that $G \cong G(q)$, a quasisimple group of exceptional Lie type over $\F_q$ which is neither a Suzuki nor a Ree group. We present a Las Vegas algorithm that constructs an isomorphism from $G$ to the standard copy of $G(q)$. If $G \not\cong {}^3 D_4(q)$ with $q$ even, then the algorithm runs in polynomial time, subject to the existence of a discrete log oracle.

Enumerating classes and characters of p-groups

We develop general formulae for the numbers of conjugacy classes and irreducible complex characters of finite p-groups of nilpotency class less than p. This allows us to unify and generalize a number of existing enumerative results, and to obtain new such results for generalizations of relatively free p-groups of exponent p. Our main tools are the Lazard correspondence and the Kirillov orbit method.
