Neutrino Masses and Interactions in a Model with Nambu-Goldstone Bosons

A natural scenario for the generation of neutrino masses is the see-saw mechanism, in which a large right-handed neutrino mass makes the left-handed neutrinos light. We review a special case when the Majorana masses originate from spontaneous breaking of a global U(1)XU(1) symmetry. The interactions of the right-handed with the left-handed neutrinos at the electorweak scale further break the global symmetry giving mass to one pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB). The pNGB can then generate a long-range force. Leptogenesis occurs through decays of heavy neutrinos into the light ones and Higgs particles. The pNGB can become the acceleron field and the neutrino masses vary with the value of the scalar field. The talk is a brief preview of the results in reference [11].

Coherent pion production by neutrinos on nuclei

The main part of coherent pion production by neutrinos on nuclei is essentially determined by PCAC, provided that the leptonic momentum transferred square Q^2 remains sufficiently small. We give the formulas for the charged and neutral current cross sections, including also the small non-PCAC transverse current contributions and taking into account the effect of the μ^- mass. Our results are compared with the experimental ones and other theoretical treatments.

Quark-hadron duality in neutrino scattering

We present a phenomenological model of the quark-hadron transition in neutrino-nucleon scattering. Using recently extracted weak nucleon transition form factors, we investigate the extent to which local and global quark-hadron duality is applicable in the neutrino F_1, F_2 and F_3 structure functions, and contrast this with duality in electron scattering. Our findings suggest that duality works relatively well for neutrino-nucleon scattering for the F_2 and F_3 structure functions, but not as well for F_1. We also calculate the quasielastic, resonance and deep inelastic contributions to the Adler sum rule, and find it to be satisfied to within 10% for 0.5 < Q^2 < 2 GeV^2.

NOSTOS: a spherical TPC to detect low energy neutrinos

A novel low-energy ($\sim$few keV) neutrino-oscillation experiment NOSTOS, combining a strong tritium source and a high pressure spherical Time Projection Chamber (TPC) detector 10 m in radius has been recently proposed. The oscillation of neutrinos of such energies occurs within the size of the detector itself, potentially allowing for a very precise (and rather systematics-free) measure of the oscillation parameters, in particular, of the smaller mixing angle $θ_{13}$, which value could be determined for the first time. This detector could also be sensitive to the neutrino magnetic moment and be capable of accurately measure the Weinberg angle at low energy. The same apparatus, filled with high pressure Xenon, exhibits a high sensitivity as a Super Nova neutrino detector with extra galactic sensitivity. The outstanding benefits of the new concept of the spherical TPC will be presented, as well as the issues to be demonstrated in the near future by an ongoing R&D. The very first results of small prototype in operation in Saclay are shown.

All electromagnetic form factors

The electromagnetic form factors of spin-1/2 particles are known, but due to historical reasons only half of them are found in many textbooks. Given the importance of the general result, its model independence, its connection to discrete symmetries and their violations we made an effort to derive and present the general result based only on the knowledge of Dirac equation. We discuss the phenomenology connected directly with the form factors, and spin precession in external fields including time reversal violating terms. We apply the formalism to spin-flip synchrotron radiation and suggest pedagogical projects.

Electron Spectra in the Ionization of Atoms by Neutrinos

For neutrinos of O(10keV) energies, their oscillation lengths are less than a few hundred meters, thereby suggesting the fascinating idea of oscillation experiments of small geometrical size. To help evaluating this idea we calculate the ionization cross sections of H, He, Ne and Xe, using any neutrino flavor, in the few keV energy range. We find that the atomic ionization cross sections per electron are always smaller than the neutrino cross sections off free electrons, approaching it from below as the energy increases to the 100 keV region. At the 10-20 keV range though, atomic binding effects are very important, particularly for the heavier atoms, inducing a factor of two reduction of the Xe ionization cross section, compared to the free electron one.

Pion Rescattering in Nuclei

Nuclear corrections are presented for neutrino and electron induced reactions in a pedagogical manner. The formalism is demonstrated with numerical studies and is shown to produce substantial corrections in channels where the pions have the same charge with the exchanged current. Two comparisons with available data show consistency of the model. Further studies along these lines will improve the accuracy of the results and enhance the discovery potential of experiments.

Comparison of a new Delta resonance production model with electron and neutrino data

We consider resonance production by neutrinos focusing on the dominant resonance $P_{33}$ at low energies with a detailed discussion of its form factors. The results are presented for free nucleon targets. The $Δ$ resonance is described by two form factors $C_3^V$ and $C_5^A$ and its differential cross sections are compared with experimental data. Further, we apply this approach to the electroproduction case and calculate its differential cross sections which are compared with electroproduction experimental data. Our approach to the analysis of $Δ$ resonance is particularly simple and self-contained such that it could be helpful for the physical interpretation.

Coherent Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering

We review coherent scattering of neutrinos on nuclei by coupling the weak currents to vector and axial-vector meson states. The couplings are obtained from known reactions, like $τ$--lepton and vector meson decays. We compute and present the cross sections as functions of energy and momentum transfer for various kinematic regions, including those which are relevant to oscillation experiments. The results are presented in figures and are consistent with numerical values used in the interpretation of oscillation experiments.

Muon spectra of Quasi-Elastic and 1-pion production events at the KEK LBL neutrino oscillation experiment

We present predictions for the flux averaged muon energy spectra of quasi-elastic (QE) and 1-pion production events for the K2K long-baseline experiment. Using the general kinematical considerations we show that the muon energy spectra closely follow the neutrino energy spectrum with downward shift of the energy scale by 0.15 GeV (QE) and 0.4 GeV (1-pion production). These predictions seem to agree with the observed muon energy spectra in the K2K nearby detector. We also show the spectral distortion of these muon energy spectra due to the neutrino oscillation for the SK detector. Comparison of the predicted spectral distortions with the observed muon spectra of the 1-Ring and 2-Ring muon events in the SK detector will help to determine the oscillation parameters. The results will be applicable to other LBL experiments as well.

Possible test for CPT invariance with correlated neutral B decays

We study breakdown of $CPT$ symmetry which can occur in the decay process $B \bar B \to l^\pm X^\mp f$ with $f$ being a CP eigenstate. In this process, the standard model expectations for time ordered semi-leptonic and hadronic events, i.e. which of the two decays takes place first, can be altered in the case that there is a violation of the $CPT$ symmetry. To illustrate this possibility, we identify and study several time integrated observables. We find that an experiment with $10^{9}$ $B\bar B$ pairs, has the capability for improving the bound on $CPT$ violating parameter or perhaps observe $CPT$ violation.

Leptogenesis

I present the theoretical basis for Leptogenesis and its implications for the structure of the universe. It is suggested that density fluctuations grow during the transition period and remnants of this effect should be sought in the universe. The relation between theories with Majorana neutrinos and low energy phenomena, including oscillations, advanced considerably during the past two years with a consistent picture developed in several models.

Muon Spectra of Quasi-Elastic and 1-Pion Production Events in LBL Neutrino Oscillation Experiments

The muon energy spectra of the quasi-elastic and 1-pion production events in a LBL experiment, like K2K, are predicted to follow closely the neutrino energy spectrum, with downward shifts of the energy scale by $ /2 M$ and $( + M_Δ^2 - M^2)/2 M$ respectively. These predictions seem to agree with the observed muon spectra in the K2K nearby detector. The corresponding muon spectra in the far-away (SK) detector are predicted to show characteristic spectral distortions induced by $ν_μ$ oscillation. Comparison of the predicted spectral distortions with the observed muon spectra of the 1-Ring and 2-Ring muon events in the SK detector will help to determine the oscillation parameters. The results will be applicable to other LBL experiments as well.

Does CPT violation affect the B_d meson life times and decay asymmetries?

We study indirect CPT violating effects in B_d meson decays and mixing, taking into account the recent constraints on the CPT violating parameters from the Belle collaboration. The life time difference of the B_d meson mass eigenstates, expected to be negligible in the standard model and many of its CPT conserving extensions, could be sizeable (\sim a few percent of the total width) due to breakdown of this fundamental symmetry. The time evolution of the direct CP violating asymmetries in one amplitude dominated processes (inclusive semileptonic B_d decays, in particular) turn out to be particularly sensitive to this effect.

Precise Ratios for Neutrino-Nucleon and Neutrino-Nucleus Interactions

It is shown that several ratios of neutral to charged current cross sections are determined accurately, because the largest contribution is determined by isospin symmetry and the smaller terms are estimated from data or theoretical calculations. This way the theoretical uncertainty is very small. It is further discussed that the ratios can be measured at various distances from the origin of the neutrino beams, because an increase with distance will be indication for neutrino oscillations and will allow a precise determination of the oscillation parameters. Finally, coherent scattering is discussed as a useful reaction for oscillations and as a means of searching for new light particles.

Leptogenesis with Majorana neutrinos

I review the origin of the lepton asymmetry which is converted to a baryon excess at the electroweak scale. This scenario becomes more attractive if we can relate it to other physical phenomena. For this reason I elaborate on the conditions of the early universe which lead to a sizable lepton asymmetry. Then I describe methods and models which relate the low energy parameters of neutrinos to the high energy (cosmological) CP-violation and to neutrinoless double beta-decay.

Neutrino Interactions at Low and Medium Energies

We discuss the calculations for several neutrino induced reactions from low energies to the GeV region. Special attention is paid to nuclear corrections when the targets are medium or heavy nuclei. Finally, we present several ratios of neutral to charged current reactions whose values on isoscalar targets can be estimated accurately. The ratios are useful for investigating neutrino oscillations in Long Baseline experiments.

The ionization of H, He and Ne atoms using neutrinos or antineutrinos at keV energies

We calculate the ionization cross sections for H, He or Ne atoms using $ν_e$ and $\bar ν_e$ scattering at keV energies. Such cross sections are useful for e.g. $\bar ν_e$-oscillation experiments using a tritium source. Using realistic atomic wave functions, we find that for $E_ν\lsim 10 ~\rm keV $ the atomic ionization cross sections, normalized to one electron per unit volume, are smaller than the corresponding free electron ones, and that they approach it from below as energies of 20 keV are reached.
