Coreless vorticity in multicomponent Bose and Fermi superfluids

We consider quantized vortices in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates and three-component Fermi gases with attractive interactions. In these systems, the vortex core can be either empty (normal in the fermion case) or filled with another superfluid. We determine critical values of the parameters -- chemical potentials, scattering lengths and, for Fermi gases, temperature -- at which a phase transition between the two types of vortices occurs. Population imbalance can lead to superfluid core (coreless) vorticity in multicomponent superfluids which otherwise support only usual vortices. For multicomponent Fermi gases, we construct the phase diagram including regions of coreless vorticity. We extend our results to trapped bosons and fermions using an appropriate local approximation, which goes beyond the usual Thomas-Fermi approximation for trapped bosons.

The Link between Integrability, Level Crossings, and Exact Solution in Quantum Models

We investigate the connection between energy level crossings in integrable systems and their integrability, i.e. the existence of a set of non-trivial integrals of motion. In particular, we consider a general quantum Hamiltonian linear in the coupling u, H(u) = T + uV, and require that it has the maximum possible number of nontrivial commuting partners also linear in u. We demonstrate how this commutation requirement alone leads to: (1) an exact solution for the energy spectrum and (2) level crossings, which are always present in these Hamiltonians in violation of the Wigner-von Neumann non-crossing rule. Moreover, we construct these Hamiltonians explicitly by resolving the above commutation requirement and show their equivalence to a sector of Gaudin magnets (central spin Hamiltonians). In contrast, fewer than the maximum number of conservation laws does not guarantee level crossings.

Phase diagram, extended domain walls, and soft collective modes in a three component fermionic superfluid

We study the phase diagram of a three-component Fermi gas with weak attractive interactions, which shows three superfluid and one normal phases. At weak symmetry breaking between the components the existence of domain walls interpolating between two superfluids introduces a new length scale much larger than the coherence length of each superfluid. This, in particular, limits the applicability of the local density approximation in the trapped case, which we also discuss. In the same regime the system hosts soft collective modes with a mass much smaller than the energy gaps of individual superfluids. We derive their dispersion relations at zero and finite temperatures and demonstrate that their presence leads to a significant enhancement of fluctuations near the superfluid-normal transitions.

Cooper pair turbulence in atomic Fermi gases

We investigate the stability of spatially uniform solutions for the collisionless dynamics of a fermionic superfluid. We demonstrate that, if the system size is larger than the superfluid coherence length, the solution characterized by a periodic in time order parameter is unstable with respect to spatial fluctuations. The instability is due to the parametric excitations of pairing modes with opposite momenta. The growth of spatial modulations is suppressed by nonlinear effects resulting in a state characterized by a random superposition of wave packets of the superfluid order parameter. We suggest that this state can be probed by spectroscopic noise measurements.

Spectroscopic signatures of nonequilibrium pairing in atomic Fermi gases

We determine the radio-frequency (RF) spectra for non-stationary states of a fermionic condensate produced by a rapid switch of the scattering length. The RF spectrum of the nonequilibrium state with constant BCS order parameter has two features in contrast to equilibrium where there is a single peak. The additional feature reflects the presence of excited pairs in the steady state. In the state characterized by periodically oscillating order parameter RF-absorption spectrum contains two sequences of peaks spaced by the frequency of oscillations. Satellite peaks appear due to a process where an RF photon in addition to breaking a pair emits/absorbs oscillation quanta.

Quantum versus classical hyperfine-induced dynamics in a quantum dot

In this article we analyze spin dynamics for electrons confined to semiconductor quantum dots due to the contact hyperfine interaction. We compare mean-field (classical) evolution of an electron spin in the presence of a nuclear field with the exact quantum evolution for the special case of uniform hyperfine coupling constants. We find that (in this special case) the zero-magnetic-field dynamics due to the mean-field approximation and quantum evolution are similar. However, in a finite magnetic field, the quantum and classical solutions agree only up to a certain time scale t<τ_c, after which they differ markedly.

Eigenfunction fractality and pseudogap state near superconductor-insulator transition

We develop a theory of a pseudogap state appearing near the superconductor-insulator transition in strongly disordered metals with attractive interaction. We show that such an interaction combined with the fractal nature of the single particle wave functions near the mobility edge leads to an anomalously large single particle gap in the superconducting state near SI transition that persists and even increases in the insulating state long after the superconductivity is destroyed. We give analytic expressions for the value of the pseudogap in terms of the inverse participation ratio of the corresponding localization problem.

Fine Structure of Matrix Darboux-Toda Integrable Mapping

We show here that matrix Darboux-Toda transformation can be written as a product of a number of mappings. Each of these mappings is a symmetry of the matrix nonlinear Shrodinger system of integro-differential equations. We thus introduce a completely new type of discrete transformations for this system. The discrete symmetry of the vector nonlinear Shrodinger system is a particular realization of these mappings.

The Origin of Degeneracies and Crossings in the 1d Hubbard Model

The paper is devoted to the connection between integrability of a finite quantum system and degeneracies of its energy levels. In particular, we analyze in detail the energy spectra of finite Hubbard chains. Heilmann and Lieb demonstrated that in these systems there are crossings of levels of the same parameter independent symmetry. We show that this apparent violation of the Wigner-von Neumann noncrossing rule follows directly from the existence of nontrivial conservation laws and is a characteristic signature of quantum integrability. The energy spectra of Hubbard chains display many instances of permanent (at all values of the coupling) twofold degeneracies that cannot be explained by parameter independent symmetries. We relate these degeneracies to the different transformation properties of the conserved currents under spatial reflections and the particle-hole transformation and estimate the fraction of doubly degenerate states. We also discuss multiply degenerate eigenstates of the Hubbard Hamiltonian. The wave functions of many of these states do not depend on the coupling, which suggests the existence of an additional parameter independent symmetry.
