Enrichment of the nonconforming virtual element method with singular functions

We construct a nonconforming virtual element method (ncVEM) based on approximation spaces that are enriched with special singular functions. This enriched ncVEM is tailored for the approximation of solutions to elliptic problems, which have singularities due to the geometry of the domain. Differently from the traditional extended Galerkin method approach, based on the enrichment of local spaces with singular functions, no partition of unity is employed. Rather, the design of the method hinges upon the special structure of the nonconforming virtual element spaces. We discuss the theoretical analysis of the method and support it with several numerical experiments. We also present an orthonormalization procedure drastically trimming the ill-conditioning of the final system.

A nodal integration scheme for meshfree Galerkin methods using the virtual element decomposition

In this paper, we present a novel nodal integration scheme for meshfree Galerkin methods that draws on the mathematical framework of the virtual element method. We adopt linear maximum-entropy basis functions for the discretization of field variables, although the proposed scheme is applicable to any linear meshfree approximant. In our approach, the weak form integrals are nodally integrated using nodal representative cells that carry the nodal displacements and state variables such as strains and stresses. The nodal integration is performed using the virtual element decomposition, wherein the bilinear form is decomposed into a consistency part and a stability part that ensure consistency and stability of the method. The performance of the proposed nodal integration scheme is assessed through benchmark problems in linear and nonlinear analyses of solids for small displacements and small-strain kinematics. Numerical results are presented for linear elastostatics and linear elastodynamics, and viscoelasticity. We demonstrate that the proposed nodally integrated meshfree method is accurate, converges optimally, and is more reliable and robust than a standard cell-based Gauss integrated meshfree method.

Curvilinear Virtual Elements for 2D solid mechanics applications

In the present work we generalize the curvilinear Virtual Element technology, introduced for a simple linear scalar problem in a previous work, to generic 2D solid mechanic problems in small deformations. Such generalization also includes the development of a novel Virtual Element space for displacements that contains rigid body motions. Our approach can accept a generic black-box (elastic or inelastic) constitutive algorithm and, in addition, can make use of curved edges thus leading to an exact approximation of the geometry. Rigorous theoretical interpolation properties for the new space on curvilinear elements are derived. We undergo an extensive numerical test campaign, both on elastic and inelastic problems, to assess the behavior of the scheme. The results are very promising and underline the advantages of the curved VEM approach over the standard one in the presence of curved geometries.

A Stress/Displacement Virtual Element Method for Plane Elasticity Problems

The numerical approximation of 2D elasticity problems is considered, in the framework of the small strain theory and in connection with the mixed Hellinger-Reissner variational formulation. A low-order Virtual Element Method (VEM) with a-priori symmetric stresses is proposed. Several numerical tests are provided, along with a rigorous stability and convergence analysis.
