The energy scale of Dirac electrons in Cd3As2

Cadmium arsenide (Cd3As2) has recently became conspicuous in solid-state physics due to several reports proposing that it hosts a pair of symmetry-protected 3D Dirac cones. Despite vast investigations, a solid experimental insight into the band structure of this material is still missing. Here we fill one of the existing gaps in our understanding of Cd3As2, and based on our Landau level spectroscopy study, we provide an estimate for the energy scale of 3D Dirac electrons in this system. We find that the appearance of such charge carriers is limited - contrary to a widespread belief in the solid-state community - to a relatively small energy scale (below 40 meV).

Non-uniform carrier density in Cd$_3$As$_2$ evidenced by optical spectroscopy

We report the detailed optical properties of Cd$_3$As$_2$ crystals in a wide parameter space: temperature, magnetic field, carrier concentration and crystal orientation. We investigate high-quality crystals synthesized by three different techniques. In all the studied samples, independently of how they were prepared and how they were treated before the optical experiments, our data indicate conspicuous fluctuations in the carrier density (up to 30%). These charge puddles have a characteristic scale of 100 $μ$m, they become more pronounced at low temperatures, and possibly, they become enhanced by the presence of crystal twinning. The Drude response is characterized by very small scattering rates ($\sim 1$ meV) for as-grown samples. Mechanical treatment, such as cutting or polishing, influences the optical properties of single crystals, by increasing the Drude scattering rate and also modifying the high frequency optical response. Magneto-reflectivity and Kerr rotation are consistent with electron-like charge carriers and a spatially non-uniform carrier density.

Magneto-optical signature of massless Kane electrons in Cd3As2

We report on optical reflectivity experiments performed on Cd3As2 over a broad range of photon energies and magnetic fields. The observed response clearly indicates the presence of 3D massless charge carriers. The specific cyclotron resonance absorption in the quantum limit implies that we are probing massless Kane electrons rather than symmetry-protected 3D Dirac particles. The latter may appear at a smaller energy scale and are not directly observed in our infrared experiments.

Scaling of normal-state transport properties of 1111 iron-pnictide superconductors

We show that the zero field normal-state resistivity above Tc for various levels of electron doping-both for underdoped, optimally, and overdoped LaO1-xFxFeAs, i.e. (x=0.05-0.075 and 0.1-0.2) and underdoped SmO1-xFxFeAs (x=0.06- 0.1) members of the 1111-iron-pnictide superconductor family-can be scaled in a broad temperature range from 20 to 300 K onto a single universal curve. The scaling was performed using the energy scale Delta, the resistivity rho(Delta) and the residual resistivity rho0 as scaling parameters as well as applying a recently proposed model-independent scaling method (H. G. Luo, Y. H. Su, and T. Xiang, Phys. Rev. B 77, 014529 (2008)). The scaling parameters have been calculated and the compositional variation of Delta has been determined. The existence of a universal metallic rho(T) curve is interpreted as an indication of a single mechanism which dominates the scattering of the charge carriers in LaO1-xFxFeAs (x= 0.05 to 0.075 and 0.1 to 0.2) and SmO1-xFxFeAs (x = 0.06 to 0.1) .

$c$-axis charge gap and its critical point in the heavily doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

Temperature-dependent inter-plane resistivity, $ρ_c(T)$, was used to characterise the normal state of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ over a broad doping range $0\leq x<0.50$. The data were compared with in-plane resistivity, $ρ_a(T)$, and magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T)$, taken in $H \bot c$, as well as Co NMR Knight shift, $^{59}K$, and spin relaxation rate, $1/T_1T$. The inter-plane resistivity data show a clear correlation with the NMR Knight shift, assigned to the formation of the pseudo-gap. Evolution of $ρ_c(T)$ with doping reveals two characteristic energy scales. The temperature of the cross-over from non-metallic, increasing on cooling, behavior of $ρ_c(T)$ at high-temperatures to metallic behavior at low temperatures, $T^*$, correlates well with an anomaly in all three magnetic measurements. This characteristic temperature, equal to approximately 200~K in the parent compound, $x$=0, decreases with doping and vanishes near $x^* \approx$0.25. For doping levels $x \geq 0.166$, an additional feature appears above $T^*$, with metallic behavior of $ρ_c (T)$ found above the low-temperature resistivity increase. The characteristic temperature of this charge-gap formation, $T_{\rm CG}$, vanishes at $x_{\rm CG} \simeq$0.30, paving the way to metallic, $T$-linear, $ρ_c (T)$ close to $x_{\rm CG}$ and super-linear $T$-dependence for $x>x_{\rm CG}$. None of these features are evident in the in-plane resistivity $ρ_a(T)$. For doping levels $x x_{\rm CG}$.

Orbital and spin effects for the upper critical field in As deficient disordered Fe pnictide superconductors

We report B_c2 data for LaO_{0.9}F_{0.1}FeAs_{1-delta} in a wide T and field range up to 60 Tesla. The large slope of B_c2 approx ~ -6 Tesla/K near an improved T_c = 28.5 K of the in-plane B_c2(T) contrasts with a flattening starting at 23 K above 30 Tesla we regard as the onset of Pauli-limited behavior (PLB) with B_c2(0) about 65 Tesla. We interpret a similar hitherto unexplained flattening of the B_c2(T) curves reported for at least three other disordered closely related systems as also as a manifestation of PLB. Their Maki parameters have been estimated analyzing their B_c2(T) data within the WHH approach. The pronounced PLB of (Ba,K)Fe_2As_2 single crystals from a tin-flux is attributed also to a significant As deficiency. Consequences of our results are discussed in terms of disorder effects within conventional (CSC) and unconventional superconductivity (USC). USC scenarios with nodes on individual Fermi surface sheets (FSS), can be discarded for our samples. The increase of dB_c2/dT|_{T_c} by sizeable disorder provides evidence for an important intraband (intra-FSS) contribution to the orbital upper critical field. We suggest that it can be ascribed either to an impurity driven transition from s_{+-} USC to CSC of an extended s_{++}-wave state or to a stabilized s_{+-}-state provided As-vacancies cause predominantly strong intraband scattering in the unitary limit. We compare our results with B_c2 data from the literature with no PLB for fields below 60 to 70 Tesla probed so far. A novel disorder related scenario of a complex interplay of SC with two different competing magnetic instabilities is suggested.

High-field ESR studies of the quantum spin magnet CaCu2O3

We report an electron spin resonance (ESR) study of the s=1/2-Heisenberg pseudo-ladder magnet CaCu2O3 in pulsed magnetic fields up to 40 T. At sub-Terahertz frequencies we observe an ESR signal originating from a small amount of uncompensated spins residing presumably at the imperfections of the strongly antiferromagnetically correlated host spin lattice. The data give evidence that these few percent of ''extra'' spin states are coupled strongly to the bulk spins and are involved in the antiferromagnetic ordering at T_N = 25 K. By mapping the frequency/resonance field diagram we have determined a small gap for magnetic excitations below T_N of the order of 0.3 - 0.8 meV. Such a small value of the gap explains the occurrence of the spin-flop transition in CaCu2O 3 at weak magnetic fields H_{sf} ~ 3 T. Qualitative changes of the ESR response with increasing the field strength give indications that strong magnetic fields reduce the antiferromagnetic correlations and may even suppress the long-range magnetic order in CaCu2O3. ESR data support scenarios with a significant role of the ''extra'' spin states for the properties of low-dimensional quantum magnets.
