Spectral Theory of Pseudo-Ergodic Operators

We define a class of pseudo-ergodic non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators acting in spaces $l^2(X)$ and prove some general theorems about their spectral properties. We then apply these to study the spectrum of a non-self-adjoint Anderson model acting on $l^2(\Z)$, and find the precise condition for 0 to lie in the spectrum of the operator. We also introduce the notion of localized spectrum for such operators.

Bounds on complex eigenvalues and resonances

We obtain bounds on the complex eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators with complex potentials, and also on the complex resonances of self-adjoint Schrödinger operators. Our bounds are compared with numerical results, and are seen to provide useful information.

On the Accurate Finite Element Solution of a Class of Fourth Order Eigenvalue Problems

This paper is concerned with the accurate numerical approximation of the spectral properties of the biharmonic operator on various domains in two dimensions. A number of analytic results concerning the eigenfunctions of this operator are summarized and their implications for numerical approximation are discussed. In particular, the asymptotic behaviour of the first eigenfunction is studied since it is known that this has an unbounded number of oscillations when approaching certain types of corner on domain boundaries. Recent computational results of Bjørstad and Tjøstheim, using a highly accurate spectral Legendre-Galerkin method, have demonstrated that a number of these sign changes may be accurately computed on a square domain provided sufficient care is taken with the numerical method. We demonstrate that similar accuracy is also achieved using an unstructured finite element solver which may be applied to problems on domains with arbitrary geometries. A number of results obtained from this mixed finite element approach are then presented for a variety of domains. These include a family of circular sector regions, for which the oscillatory behaviour is studied as a function of the internal angle, and another family of (symmetric and non-convex) domains, for which the parity of the least eigenfunction is investigated. The paper not only verifies existing asymptotic theory, but also allows us to make a new conjecture concerning the eigenfunctions of the biharmonic operator.

On eigenfunction approximations for typical non-self-adjoint Schroedinger operators

We construct efficient approximations for the eigenfunctions of non-self-adjoint Schroedinger operators in one dimension. The same ideas also apply to the study of resonances of self-adjoint Schroedinger operators which have dilation analytic potentials. In spite of the fact that such eigenfunctions can have surprisingly complicated structures with multiple local maxima, we show that a suitable adaptation of the JWKB method is able to provide accurate lobal approximations to them.

Spectral Instability for Some Schroedinger Operators

We define the concept of instability index of an isolated eigenvalue of a non-self-adjoint operator, and prove some of its general properties. We also describe a stable procedure for computing this index for Schroedinger operators in one dimension, and apply it to the complex resonances of a typical operator with a dilation analytic potential.
