Recovering General Relativity from massive gravity

We obtain static, spherically symmetric, and asymptotically flat numerical solutions of massive gravity with a source. Those solutions show, for the first time explicitly, a recovery of the Schwarzschild solution of General Relativity via the so-called Vainshtein mechanism.

k-Mouflage gravity

We introduce a large class of scalar-tensor theories where gravity becomes stronger at large distances via the exchange of a scalar that mixes with the graviton. At small distances, i.e. large curvature, the scalar is screened via an analog of the Vainshtein mechanism of massive gravity. The crossover distance between the two regimes can be made cosmological by an appropriate choice of the parameters.

The Vainshtein mechanism in the Decoupling Limit of massive gravity

We investigate static spherically symmetric solutions of nonlinear massive gravities. We first identify, in an ansatz appropriate to the study of those solutions, the analog of the decoupling limit (DL) that has been used in the Goldstone picture description. We show that the system of equations left over in the DL has regular solutions featuring a Vainshtein-like recovery of solutions of General Relativity (GR). Hence, the singularities found to arise integrating the full nonlinear system of equations are not present in the DL, despite the fact those singularities are usually thought to be due to a negative energy mode also seen in this limit. Moreover, we show that the scaling conjectured by Vainshtein at small radius is only a limiting case in an infinite family of non singular solutions each showing a Vainshtein recovery of GR solutions below the Vainshtein radius but a different common scaling at small distances. This new scaling is shown to be associated with a zero mode of the nonlinearities left over in the DL. We also show that, in the DL, this scaling allows for a recovery of GR solutions even for potentials where the original Vainshtein mechanism is not working. Our results imply either that the DL misses some important features of nonlinear massive gravities or that important features of the solutions of the full nonlinear theory have been overlooked. They could also have interesting outcomes for the DGP model and related proposals.

Ultra-hard fluid and scalar field in the Kerr-Newman metric

An analytic solution for the accretion of ultra-hard perfect fluid onto a moving Kerr-Newman black hole is found. This solution is a generalization of the previously known solution by Petrich, Shapiro and Teukolsky for a Kerr black hole. Our solution is not applicable for an extreme black hole due to violation of the test fluid approximation. We also present a stationary solution for a massless scalar field in the metric of a Kerr-Newman naked singularity.

Gauge k-vortices

We consider gauge vortices in symmetry breaking models with a non-canonical kinetic term. This work extends our previous study on global topological k-defects (hep-th/0608071), including a gauge field. The model consists of a scalar field with a non-canonical kinetic term, while for the gauge field the standard form of its kinetic term is preserved. Topological defects arising in such models, k-vortices, may have quite different properties as compared to ``standard'' vortices. This happens because an additional dimensional parameter enters the Lagrangian for the considered model -- a ``kinetic'' mass. We briefly discuss possible consequences for cosmology, in particular, the formation of cosmic strings during phase transitions in the early universe and their properties.

Escaping from the black hole?

We show that if there exists a special kind of Born-Infeld type scalar field, then one can send information from inside a black hole. This information is encoded in perturbations of the field propagating in non-trivial scalar field backgrounds, which serves as a "new ether". Although the theory is Lorentz-invariant it allows, nevertheless, the superluminal propagation of perturbations with respect to the "new ether". We found the stationary solution for background, which describes the accretion of the scalar field onto a black hole. Examining the propagation of small perturbations around this solution we show the signals emitted inside the horizon can reach an observer located outside the black hole. We discuss possible physical consequences of this result.

Global topological k-defects

We consider global topological defects in symmetry breaking models with a non-canonical kinetic term. Apart from a mass parameter entering the potential, one additional dimensional parameter arises in such models -- a ``kinetic'' mass. The properties of defects in these models are quite different from ``standard'' global domain walls, vortices and monopoles, if their kinetic mass scale is smaller than their symmetry breaking scale. In particular, depending on the concrete form of the kinetic term, the typical size of such a defect can be either much larger or much smaller than the size of a standard defect with the same potential term. The characteristic mass of a non-standard defect, which might have been formed during a phase transition in the early universe, depends on both the temperature of a phase transition and the kinetic mass.

Black hole mass decreasing due to phantom energy accretion

Solution for a stationary spherically symmetric accretion of the relativistic perfect fluid with an equation of state p(rho) onto the Schwarzschild black hole is presented. This solution is a generalization of Michel solution and applicable to the problem of dark energy accretion. It is shown that accretion of phantom energy is accompanied with the gradual decrease of the black hole mass. Masses of all black holes tend to zero in the phantom energy universe approaching to the Big Rip.

The Accretion of Dark Energy onto a Black Hole

The stationary, spherically symmetric accretion of dark energy onto a Schwarzschild black hole is considered in terms of relativistic hydrodynamics. The approximation of an ideal fluid is used to model the dark energy. General expressions are derived for the accretion rate of an ideal fluid with an arbitrary equation of state p=p(ρ) onto a black hole. The black hole mass was found to decrease for the accretion of phantom energy. The accretion process is studied in detail for two dark energy models that admit an analytical solution: a model with a linear equation of state, p=α(ρ-ρ_0), and a Chaplygin gas. For one of the special cases of a linear equation of state, an analytical expression is derived for the accretion rate of dark energy onto a moving and rotating black hole. The masses of all black holes are shown to approach zero in cosmological models with phantom energy in which the Big Rip scenario is realized.

Constraining cosmic superstrings with dilaton emission

Brane inflation predicts the production of cosmic superstrings with tension 10^{-12}<Gμ<10^{-7}. Superstring theory predicts also the existence of a dilaton with a mass that is at most of the order of the gravitino mass. We show that the emission of dilatons imposes severe constraints on the allowed evolution of a cosmic superstring network. In particular, the detection of gravitational wave burst from cosmic superstrings by LIGO is only possible if the typical length of string loops is much smaller than usually assumed.

Gravitational radiation from rotating monopole-string systems

We study the gravitational radiation from a rotating monopole-antimonopole pair connected by a string. While at not too high frequencies the emitted gravitational spectrum is described asymptotically by $P_n\propto n^{-1}$, the spectrum is exponentially suppressed in the high-frequency limit, $P_n\propto \exp(-n/n_{\rm cr})$. Below $n_{\rm cr}$, the emitted spectrum of gravitational waves is very similar to the case of an oscillating monopole pair connected by a string, and we argue therefore that the spectrum found holds approximately for any moving monopole-string system. As application, we discuss the stochastic gravitational wave background generated by monopole-antimonopole pairs connected by strings in the early Universe and gravitational wave bursts emitted at present by monopole-string networks. We confirm that advanced gravitational wave detectors have the potential to detect a signal for string tensions as small as $Gμ\sim 10^{-13}$.

Dark energy cosmology with generalized linear equation of state

Dark energy with the usually used equation of state $p=wρ$, where $w=const<0$ is hydrodynamically unstable. To overcome this drawback we consider the cosmology of a perfect fluid with a linear equation of state of a more general form $p=α(ρ-ρ_0)$, where the constants $α$ and $ρ_0$ are free parameters. This non-homogeneous linear equation of state provides the description of both hydrodynamically stable ($α>0$) and unstable ($α<0$) fluids. In particular, the considered cosmological model describes the hydrodynamically stable dark (and phantom) energy. The possible types of cosmological scenarios in this model are determined and classified in terms of attractors and unstable points by the using of phase trajectories analysis. For the dark energy case there are possible some distinctive types of cosmological scenarios: (i) the universe with the de Sitter attractor at late times, (ii) the bouncing universe, (iii) the universe with the Big Rip and with the anti-Big Rip. In the framework of a linear equation of state the universe filled with an phantom energy, $w<-1$, may have either the de Sitter attractor or the Big Rip.

Energy, momentum and angular momentum radiation from chiral cosmic string loops

We derived expressions for energy, momentum and angular momentum losses due to gravitational and electromagnetic radiation from the closed superconducting chiral cosmic strings of arbitrary form. The expressions for corresponding radiation rates into the unit solid angle have the form of four-dimensional integrals. In the special case of piece-wise linear strings these formulas are reduced to sums over the kinks. We calculate numerically the total radiation rates for three examples of string loops in dependence of current along the string.
