Surface effects in multiband superconductors. Application to MgB$_2$

Metals with many bands at the Fermi level can have different band dependent gaps in the superconducting state. The absence of translational symmetry at an interface can induce interband scattering and modify the superconducting properties. We dicuss the relevance of these effects to recent experiments in MgB$_2$.

Non-equlibrium effects in transport through quantum dots

The role of non-equilibrium effects in the conductance through quantum dots is investigated. Associated with single-electron tunneling are shake-up processes and the formation of excitonic-like resonances. They change qualitatively the low temperature properties of the system. We analyze by quantum Monte Carlo methods the renormalization of the effective capacitance and the gate-voltage dependent conductance. Experimental relevance is discussed.

Andreev scattering in nanoscopic junctions at high magnetic fields

We report on the measurement of multiple Andreev resonances at atomic size point contacts between two superconducting nanostructures of Pb under magnetic fields higher than the bulk critical field, where superconductivity is restricted to a mesoscopic region near the contact. The small number of conduction channels in this type of contacts permits a quantitative comparison with theory through the whole field range. We discuss in detail the physical properties of our structure, in which the normal bulk electrodes induce a proximity effect into the mesoscopic superconducting part.

Nanosized superconducting constrictions

Nanowires of lead between macroscopic electrodes are produced by means of an STM. Magnetic fields may destroy the superconductivity in the electrodes, while the wire remains in the superconducting state. The properties of the resulting microscopic Josephson junctions are investigated.

Quasiparticle spectrum of grain boundaries in d-wave superconductors

A grain boundary which separates domains with different orientation along the c-axis is analyzed. The coupling of two parallel superconducting planes whose order parameters are rotated leads to interesting properties which are expected to be common to other kinds of grain boundary. The density of states is enhanced at low energies. The number of localized states depends on the degree of misfit across the boundary. A continuum of zero energy states appears at certain values of the angle rotation.

On the statistical significance of the conductance quantization

Recent experiments on atomic-scale metallic contacts have shown that the quantization of the conductance appears clearly only after the average of the experimental results. Motivated by these results we have analyzed a simplified model system in which a narrow neck is randomly coupled to wide ideal leads, both in absence and presence of time reversal invariance. Based on Random Matrix Theory we study analytically the probability distribution for the conductance of such system. As the width of the leads increases the distribution for the conductance becomes sharply peaked close to an integer multiple of the quantum of conductance. Our results suggest a possible statistical origin of conductance quantization in atomic-scale metallic contacts.
