Energy Calibration and Performance of HPGe Detectors in the LEGEND-200 Experiment

This paper describes the energy scale procedures and germanium detectors performance in the LEGEND-200 experiment, a critical component for the first unblinding in the search for neutrinoless double beta decay. We detail the digital signal processing pipeline, the methodologies for peak-shape modeling and energy calibration procedures utilizing weekly $^{228}$Th source calibration runs. The optimized energy reconstruction achieves a combined average resolution of $(2.47 \pm 0.08)$~keV at $Q_{\beta\beta} = 2039$~keV. The weekly variation of calibration peak positions are below 0.05~keV for energies up to 2614.5~keV, showing a high stability of the energy scale over time and across detectors. Furthermore, systematic corrections effectively address residual non-linearities and energy bias in the region of interest.

First Results on the Search for Lepton Number Violating Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay with the LEGEND-200 Experiment

The LEGEND collaboration is searching for neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay by operating high-purity germanium detectors enriched in $^{76}$Ge in a low-background liquid argon environment. Building on key technological innovations from GERDA and the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, LEGEND-200 has performed a first $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay search based on 61.0 kg yr of data. Over half of this exposure comes from our highest performing detectors, including newly developed inverted-coaxial detectors, and is characterized by an estimated background level of $0.5^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ cts/(keV kg yr) in the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay signal region. A combined analysis of data from GERDA, the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, and LEGEND-200, characterized by a 90% confidence level exclusion sensitivity of $2.8 \times 10^{26}$ yr on the half-life of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay, reveals no evidence for a signal and sets a new observed lower limit at $T^{0\nu}_{1/2} > 1.9 \times 10^{26}$ yr (90% confidence level). Assuming the decay is mediated by Majorana neutrinos, this corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range $m_{\beta\beta} < 75-200$ meV, depending on the adopted nuclear matrix element.

Design and Commissioning of Readout Electronics for a $K_L^0$ and $\mu$ Detector at the Belle II Experiment

The K-long and muon detector (KLM) constitutes the outer-most volume of the Belle II spectrometer at the interaction region of the SuperKEKB collider in Tsukuba, Japan. The KLM detector was partially upgraded since the Belle experiment by replacing many of its resistive-plate chambers with scintillators containing wavelength-shifting fibers and instrumenting it with silicon photomultipliers. We describe the readout electronics, firmware, and software created to control and acquire data from the scintillators and resistive-plate chambers.

Search for a $\tau^+\tau^-$ resonance in $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow \mu^{+}\mu^{-} \tau^+\tau^-$ events with the Belle II experiment

We report the first search for a non-standard-model resonance decaying into $\tau$ pairs in $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow \mu^{+}\mu^{-} \tau^+\tau^-$ events in the 3.6-10 GeV/$c^{2}$ mass range. We use a 62.8 fb$^{-1}$ sample of $e^+e^-$ collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. The analysis probes three different models predicting a spin-1 particle coupling only to the heavier lepton families, a Higgs-like spin-0 particle that couples preferentially to charged leptons (leptophilic scalar), and an axion-like particle, respectively. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at 90% confidence level on the product of cross section and branching fraction into $\tau$ pairs, ranging from 0.7 fb to 24 fb, and on the couplings of these processes. We obtain world-leading constraints on the couplings for the leptophilic scalar model for masses above 6.5 GeV/$c^2$ and for the axion-like particle model over the entire mass range.

Search for lepton-flavor-violating $\tau^- \to \ell^-\phi$ decays in 2019-2021 Belle II data

We report a search for lepton-flavor-violating decays $\tau^- \to \ell^- \phi$ ($\ell^- =e^-,\mu^-$) at the Belle II experiment, using a sample of electron-positron data produced at the SuperKEKB collider in 2019-2021 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 190 fb$^{-1}$. We use a new untagged selection for $e^+e^- \to \tau^+\tau^-$ events, where the signal $\tau$ is searched for as a neutrinoless final state of a single charged lepton and a $\phi$ meson and the other $\tau$ is not reconstructed in any specific decay mode, in contrast to previous measurements by the BaBar and Belle experiments. We find no evidence for $\tau^- \to \ell^- \phi$ decays and obtain upper limits on the branching fractions at 90% confidence level of 23 $\times 10^{-8}$ and 9.7$\times 10^{-8}$ for $\tau^- \rightarrow e^-\phi$ and $\tau^- \rightarrow \mu^-\phi$, respectively

Observation of ${B\to D^{(*)} K^- K^{0}_S}$ decays using the 2019-2022 Belle II data sample

We present a measurement of the branching fractions of four $B^{0,-}\to D^{(*)+,0} K^- K^{0}_S$ decay modes. The measurement is based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance collected with the Belle II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of ${362~\text{fb}^{-1}}$. The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ meson energy to separate signal and background, and are efficiency-corrected as a function of the invariant mass of the $K^-K_S^0$ system. We find the branching fractions to be: \[ \text{B}(B^-\to D^0K^-K_S^0)=(1.89\pm 0.16\pm 0.10)\times 10^{-4}, \] \[ \text{B}(\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0)=(0.85\pm 0.11\pm 0.05)\times 10^{-4},\] \[ \text{B}(B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0)=(1.57\pm 0.27\pm 0.12)\times 10^{-4}, \] \[ \text{B}(\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0)=(0.96\pm 0.18\pm 0.06)\times 10^{-4},\] where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These results include the first observation of $\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0$, $B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0$, and $\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of $\text{B}(B^-\to D^0K^-K_S^0)$ compared to previous measurements.

Measurement of the branching fraction and $\it CP$ asymmetry of $B^{0} \rightarrow \pi^{0} \pi^{0}$ decays using $198 \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs in Belle II data

We report measurements of the branching fraction and $\it CP$ asymmetry in $B^{0} \to \pi^{0} \pi^{0}$ decays reconstructed at Belle II in an electron-positron collision sample containing $198 \times 10^{6}$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs. We measure a branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(\Bpipi) = (1.38 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.22) \times 10^{-6}$ and a $\it CP$ asymmetry $\Acp(\Bpipi) = 0.14 \pm 0.46 \pm 0.07$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of the $B^0$ lifetime and flavor-oscillation frequency using hadronic decays reconstructed in 2019-2021 Belle II data

We measure the $B^0$ lifetime and flavor-oscillation frequency using $B^0\to D^{(*)-}\pi^+$ decays collected by the Belle II experiment in asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collisions produced by the SuperKEKB collider operating at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. We fit the decay-time distribution of signal decays, where the initial flavor is determined by identifying the flavor of the other $B$ meson in the event. The results, based on $33000$ signal decays reconstructed in a data sample corresponding to ${190}\text{fb}^{-1}$, are $\tau_{B^0} = {1.499}\pm{0.013}\pm{0.008}\;\text{ps}$, $\Delta m_d = {0.516}\pm{0.008}\pm{0.005}\;\text{ps}^{-1}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are consistent with the world-average values.

A test of light-lepton universality in the rates of inclusive semileptonic $B$-meson decays at Belle II

We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic $B$-meson decays, $R(X_{e/\mu}) = \mathcal{B}(B\to X \, e \, \nu) / \mathcal{B}(B\to X \, \mu \, \nu)$, a precision test of electron-muon universality, using data corresponding to $189\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ from electron-positron collisions collected with the Belle II detector. In events where the partner $B$ meson is fully reconstructed, we use fits to the lepton momentum spectra above $1.3\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$ to obtain $R(X_{e/\mu}) = 1.007 \pm 0.009~(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.019~(\mathrm{syst})$, which is the most precise lepton-universality test of its kind and agrees with the standard-model expectation.

Measurement of the $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} \nu_{\ell}$ branching ratio and $|V_{cb}|$ with a fully reconstructed accompanying $B$ meson in 2019-2021 Belle II data

We present a measurement of the $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} \nu_{\ell}$ ($\ell=e,\mu$) branching ratio and of the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using signal decays accompanied by a fully reconstructed $B$ meson. The Belle II data set of electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance, corresponding to 189.3$\,$fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, is analyzed. With the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert form factor parameterization, the parameters $\eta_{\rm EW} F(1) |V_{cb}|$ and $\rho^{2}$ are extracted, where $\eta_{\rm EW}$ is an electroweak correction, $F(1)$ is a normalization factor and $\rho^{2}$ is a form factor shape parameter. We reconstruct 516 signal decays and thereby obtain $\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} \nu_{\ell} ) = \left(5.27 \pm 0.22~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.38~\rm{\left(syst\right)}\right) \%$, $\eta_{EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| \times 10^{3} = 34.6 \pm 1.8~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 1.7~\rm{\left(syst\right)}$, and $\rho^{2} = 0.94 \pm 0.18~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.11~\rm{\left(syst\right)}$.

Search for Lepton-Flavor-Violating $\tau$ Decays to a Lepton and an Invisible Boson at Belle II

We search for lepton-flavor-violating $\tau^-\to e^-\alpha$ and $\tau^-\to\mu^-\alpha$ decays, where $\alpha$ is an invisible spin-0 boson. The search uses electron-positron collisions at $10.58$ GeV center-of-mass energy with an integrated luminosity of $62.8$ fb$^{-1}$, produced by the SuperKEKB collider and collected with the Belle II detector. We search for an excess in the lepton-energy spectrum of the known $\tau^-\to e^-\bar\nu_e \nu_\tau$ and $\tau^-\to \mu^-\bar\nu_\mu \nu_\tau$ decays. We report 95\% confidence-level upper limits on the branching-fraction ratio ${\mathcal B}(\tau^-\to e^- \alpha) / {\mathcal B}(\tau^- \to e^- \bar\nu_e \nu_\tau)$ in the range $(1.1-9.7) \times 10^{-3}$ and on ${\mathcal B}(\tau^-\to \mu^- \alpha) / {\mathcal B}(\tau^- \to \mu^- \bar\nu_\mu \nu_\tau)$ in the range $(0.7-12.2) \times 10^{-3}$ for $\alpha$ masses between 0 and 1.6 GeV/c$^2$. These results provide the most stringent bounds on invisible boson production from $\tau$ decays.

Search for an invisible $Z^\prime$ in a final state with two muons and missing energy at Belle II

The $L_{\mu}-L_{\tau}$ extension of the standard model predicts the existence of a lepton-flavor-universality-violating $Z^{\prime}$ boson that couples only to the heavier lepton families. We search for such a $Z^\prime$ through its invisible decay in the process $e^+ e^- \to \mu^+ \mu^- Z^{\prime}$. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58GeV collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019-2020, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 79.7fb$^{-1}$. We find no excess over the expected standard-model background. We set 90$\%$-confidence-level upper limits on the cross section for this process as well as on the coupling of the model, which ranges from $3 \times 10^{-3}$ at low $Z^{\prime}$ masses to 1 at $Z^{\prime}$ masses of 8$GeV/c^{2}$.

Reconstruction of $B \to \rho \ell \nu_\ell$ decays identified using hadronic decays of the recoil $B$ meson in 2019 -- 2021 Belle II data

We present results on the semileptonic decays $B^0 \to \rho^- \ell^+ \nu_\ell$ and $B^+ \to \rho^0 \ell^+ \nu_\ell$ in a sample corresponding to 189.9/fb of Belle II data at the SuperKEKB $e^- e^+$ collider. Signal decays are identified using full reconstruction of the recoil $B$ meson in hadronic final states. We determine the total branching fractions via fits to the distributions of the square of the "missing" mass in the event and the dipion mass in the signal candidate and find ${\mathcal{B}(B^0\to\rho^-\ell^+ \nu_\ell) = (4.12 \pm 0.64(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 1.16(\mathrm{syst})) \times 10^{-4}}$ and ${\mathcal{B}({B^+\to\rho^0\ell^+\nu_\ell}) = (1.77 \pm 0.23 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.36 (\mathrm{syst})) \times 10^{-4}}$ where the dominant systematic uncertainty comes from modeling the nonresonant $B\to (\pi\pi)\ell^+\nu_\ell$ contribution.

Determination of $|V_{cb}|$ from $B\to D\ell\nu$ decays using 2019-2021 Belle II data

We present a determination of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $V_{cb}$ using $B\to D\ell\nu$ decays. The result is based on $e^+e^-\to\Upsilon(4S)$ data recorded by the Belle II detector corresponding to 189.2/fb of integrated luminosity. The semileptonic decays $B^0\to D^-(\to K^+\pi^-\pi^-)\ell^+\nu_\ell$ and $B^+\to\bar D^0(\to K^+\pi^-)\ell^+\nu_\ell$ are reconstructed, where $\ell$ is either electron or a muon. The second $B$ meson in the $\Upsilon(4S)$ event is not explicitly reconstructed. Using the diamond-frame method, we determine the $B$ meson four-momentum and thus the hadronic recoil. We extract the partial decay rates as functions of $w$ and perform a fit to the decay form-factor and the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using the BGL parameterization of the form factor and lattice QCD input from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations. We obtain $\eta_{EW}|V_{cb}|=(38.53\pm 1.15)\times 10^{-3}$, where $\eta_{EW}$ is an electroweak correction, and the error accounts for theoretical and experimental sources of uncertainty.

Measurement of the photon-energy spectrum in inclusive $B\rightarrow X_{s}\gamma$ decays identified using hadronic decays of the recoil $B$ meson in 2019-2021 Belle II data

We measure the photon-energy spectrum in radiative bottom-meson ($B$) decays into inclusive final states involving a strange hadron and a photon. We use SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions corresponding to $189~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance by the Belle II experiment. The partner $B$ candidates are fully reconstructed using a large number of hadronic channels. The $B \rightarrow X_s \gamma$ partial branching fractions are measured as a function of photon energy in the signal $B$ meson rest frame in eight bins above $1.8~\mathrm{GeV}$. The background-subtracted signal yield for this photon energy region is $343 \pm 122$ events. Integrated branching fractions for three photon energy thresholds of $1.8~\mathrm{GeV}$, $2.0~\mathrm{GeV}$, and $2.1~\mathrm{GeV}$ are also reported, and found to be in agreement with world averages.

Determination of $|V_{ub}|$ from untagged $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$ decays using 2019-2021 Belle II data

We present an analysis of the charmless semileptonic decay $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$, where $\ell = e, \mu$, from 198.0 million pairs of $B\bar{B}$ mesons recorded by the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. The decay is reconstructed without identifying the partner $B$ meson. The partial branching fractions are measured independently for $B^0\to\pi^- e^+ \nu_{e}$ and $B^0\to\pi^- \mu^+ \nu_{\mu}$ as functions of $q^{2}$ (momentum transfer squared), using 3896 $B^0\to\pi^- e^+ \nu_{e}$ and 5466 $B^0\to\pi^- \mu^+ \nu_{\mu}$ decays. The total branching fraction is found to be $(1.426 \pm 0.056 \pm 0.125) \times 10^{-4}$ for $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$ decays, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. By fitting the measured partial branching fractions as functions of $q^{2}$, together with constraints on the nonperturbative hadronic contribution from lattice QCD calculations, the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$, $(3.55 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{-3}$, is extracted. Here, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is theoretical.

Measurement of decay-time dependent $CP$ violation in $B^0 \rightarrow K^0_S K^0_S K^0_S$ using 2019--2021 Belle II data

Measurement of the branching fractions and $CP$ asymmetries of $B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^0$ and $B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \pi^0$ decays in 2019-2021 Belle II data

We determine the branching fractions ${\mathcal{B}}$ and $CP$ asymmetries ${\mathcal{A}_{{\it CP}}}$ of the decays $B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^0$ and $B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \pi^0$. The results are based on a data set containing 198 million bottom-antibottom meson pairs corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $190\;\text{fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the Belle II detector in energy-asymmetric electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon (4S)$ resonance. We measure ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^0) = (6.12 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.53)\times 10^{-6}}$, ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \pi^0) = (14.30 \pm 0.69 \pm 0.79)\times 10^{-6}}$, ${\mathcal{A}_{{\it CP}}(B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^0) = -0.085 \pm 0.085 \pm 0.019}$, and ${\mathcal{A}_{{\it CP}}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \pi^0) = 0.014 \pm 0.047 \pm 0.010}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results improve a previous Belle II measurement and agree with the world averages.
