Unconventional magnetic phase separation in $γ$-CoV$_2$O$_6$

We have explored the magnetism in the non-geometrically frustrated spin-chain system $γ$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ which possesses a complex magnetic exchange network. Our neutron diffraction patterns at low temperatures ($T$ $\leqslant$ $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ = 6.6 K) are best described by a model in which two magnetic phases coexist in a volume ratio 65(1) : 35(1), with each phase consisting of a single spin modulation. This model fits previous studies and our observations better than the model proposed by Lenertz $et$ $al$ in J. Phys. Chem. C 118, 13981 (2014), which consisted of one phase with two spin modulations. By decreasing the temperature from $T_{\mathrm{N}}$, the minority phase of our model undergoes an incommensurate-commensurate lock-in transition at $T^{*}$ = 5.6 K. Based on these results, we propose that phase separation is an alternative approach for degeneracy-lifting in frustrated magnets.

Absence of magnetic long range order in Y$_{2}$CrSbO$_{7}$: bond-disorder induced magnetic frustration in a ferromagnetic pyrochlore

The consequences of nonmagnetic-ion dilution for the pyrochlore family Y$_{2}$($M_{1-x}N_{x}$)$_{2}$O$_{7}$ ($M$ = magnetic ion, $N$ = nonmagnetic ion) have been investigated. As a first step, we experimentally examine the magnetic properties of Y$_{2}$CrSbO$_{7}$ ($x$ = 0.5), in which the magnetic sites (Cr$^{3+}$) are percolative. Although the effective Cr-Cr spin exchange is ferromagnetic, as evidenced by a positive Curie-Weiss temperature, $Θ_\mathrm{CW}$ = 20.1(6) K, our high-resolution neutron powder diffraction measurements detect no sign of magnetic long range order down to 2 K. In order to understand our observations, we performed numerical simulations to study the bond-disorder introduced by the ionic size mismatch between $M$ and $N$. Based on these simulations, bond-disorder ($x_{b}$ $\simeq$ 0.23) percolates well ahead of site-disorder ($x_{s}$ $\simeq$ 0.61). This model successfully reproduces the critical region (0.2 < $x$ < 0.25) for the Néel to spin glass phase transition in Zn(Cr$_{1-x}$Ga$_{x}$)$_{2}$O$_{4}$, where the Cr/Ga-sublattice forms the same corner-sharing tetrahedral network as the $M/N$-sublattice in Y$_{2}$($M_{1-x}N_{x}$)$_{2}$O$_{7}$, and the rapid drop in magnetically ordered moment in the Néel phase [Lee $et$ $al$, Phys. Rev. B 77, 014405 (2008)]. Our study stresses the nonnegligible role of bond-disorder on magnetic frustration, even in ferromagnets.

Magnetic field controlled charge density wave coupling in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$

The application of large magnetic fields ($B \sim B_{c2}$) to layered cuprates suppresses their high temperature superconducting behaviour and reveals competing ground states. In the widely-studied material YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ (YBCO), underdoped ($p \sim 1/8$) samples show signatures of field-induced electronic and structural changes at low temperatures. However, the microscopic nature of the field-induced reconstruction and the high-field state are unclear. Here we report an x-ray study of the high-field charge density wave (CDW) in YBCO, for doping, $0.1 \lesssim p \lesssim 0.13$. For $p \sim 0.123$, we find that a field ($B \sim 10$~T) induces new CDW correlations along the CuO chain ($b$) direction only, leading to a 3-D ordered state along this direction at $B \sim 15$~T. The CDW signal along the $a$-direction is also enhanced by field, but does not develop a new pattern of correlations. We find that field modifies the coupling between the CuO$_2$ bilayers in the YBCO structure, and causes the sudden appearance of 3D CDW order. The mirror symmetry of individual bilayers is broken by the CDW at low and high fields, allowing recently suggested Fermi surface reconstruction.

Fermi Surface Reconstruction and Quantum Oscillations in Underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ Modeled in a Single Bilayer with Mirror Symmetry Broken by Charge Density Waves

Hole-doped high-temperature cuprate superconductors below optimum doping have small electron-like Fermi surfaces occupying a small fraction of the Brillouin zone. There is strong evidence that this is linked to charge density wave (CDW) order, which reconstructs the large hole-like Fermi surfaces predicted by band structure calculations . Recent experiments have revealed the structure of the two CDW components in the benchmark bilayer material YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ in high field where quantum oscillation (QO) measurements are performed. We have combined these results with a tight-binding description of the bands in an isolated bilayer to give a minimal model revealing the essential physics of the situation. Here we show that this approach, combined with the effects of spin-orbit interactions and the pseudogap, gives a good qualitative description of the multiple frequencies seen in the QO observations in this material. Magnetic breakdown through weak CDW splitting of the bands will lead to a field-dependence of the QO spectrum and to the observed fourfold symmetry of the results in tilted fields.

The nature of the charge density waves in under-doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.54}$ revealed by X-ray measurements of the ionic displacements

All underdoped high-temperature cuprate superconductors appear to exhibit charge density wave (CDW) order, but both the underlying symmetry breaking and the origin of the CDW remain unclear. We use X-ray diffraction to determine the microscopic structure of the CDW in an archetypical cuprate YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.54}$ at its superconducting transition temperature Tc ~ 60 K. We find that the CDWs present in this material break the mirror symmetry of the CuO2 bilayers. The ionic displacements in a CDW have two components: one perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ planes, and another parallel to these planes, which is out of phase with the first. The largest displacements are those of the planar oxygen atoms and are perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ planes. Our results allow many electronic properties of the underdoped cuprates to be understood. For instance, the CDW will lead to local variations in the doping (or electronic structure) giving an explicit explanation of the appearance of density-wave states with broken symmetry in scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and soft X-ray measurements.

High magnetic field studies of the Vortex Lattice structure in YBa2Cu3O7

We report on small angle neutron scattering measurements of the vortex lattice in twin-free YBa2Cu3O7, extending the previously investigated maximum field of 11~T up to 16.7~T with the field applied parallel to the c axis. This is the first microscopic study of vortex matter in this region of the superconducting phase. We find the high field VL displays a rhombic structure, with a field-dependent coordination that passes through a square configuration, and which does not lock-in to a field-independent structure. The VL pinning reduces with increasing temperature, but is seen to affect the VL correlation length even above the irreversibility temperature of the lattice structure. At high field and temperature we observe a melting transition, which appears to be first order, with no detectable signal from a vortex liquid above the transition.

Neutron spin echo spectroscopy under 17T magnetic field at RESEDA

We report proof-of-principle measurements at the neutron resonance spin echo spectrometer RESEDA (MLZ) under large magnetic fields by means of Modulation of IntEnsity with Zero Effort (MIEZE). Our study demonstrates the feasibility of applying strong magnetic fields up to 17\,T at the sample while maintaining unchanged sub-$μ$eV resolution. We find that the MIEZE-spin-echo resolution curve remains essentially unchanged as a function of magnetic field up to the highest fields available, promising access to high fields without need for additional fine-tuning of the instrument. This sets the stage for the experimental investigation of subtle field dependent phenomena, such as magnetic field-driven phase transitions in hard and soft condensed matter physics.

Vortex lattice structure in BaFe2(As0.67P0.33)2 by the small-angle neutron scattering technique

We have observed a magnetic vortex lattice (VL) in BaFe2(As_{0.67}P_{0.33})2 (BFAP) single crystals by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). With the field along the c-axis, a nearly isotropic hexagonal VL was formed in the field range from 1 to 16 T, which is a record for this technique in the pnictides, and no symmetry changes in the VL were observed. The temperature-dependence of the VL signal was measured and confirms the presence of (non d-wave) nodes in the superconducting gap structure for measurements at 5 T and below. The nodal effects were suppressed at high fields. At low fields, a VL reorientation transition was observed between 1 T and 3 T, with the VL orientation changing by 45°. Below 1 T, the VL structure was strongly affected by pinning and the diffraction pattern had a fourfold symmetry. We suggest that this (and possibly also the VL reorientation) is due to pinning to defects aligned with the crystal structure, rather than being intrinsic.

Competing charge, spin, and superconducting orders in underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy

To explore the doping dependence of the recently discovered charge density wave (CDW) order in YBa2Cu3Oy, we present a bulk-sensitive high-energy x-ray study for several oxygen concentrations, including strongly underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.44. Combined with previous data around the so-called 1/8 doping, we show that bulk CDW order exists at least for hole concentrations (p) in the CuO2 planes of 0.078 <~ p <~ 0.132. This implies that CDW order exists in close vicinity to the quantum critical point for spin density wave (SDW) order. In contrast to the pseudogap temperature T*, the onset temperature of CDW order decreases with underdoping to T_CDW ~ 90K in YBa2Cu3O6.44. Together with a weakened order parameter this suggests a competition between CDW and SDW orders. In addition, the CDW order in YBa2Cu3O6.44 shows the same type of competition with superconductivity as a function of temperature and magnetic field as samples closer to p = 1/8. At low p the CDW incommensurability continues the previously reported linear increasing trend with underdoping. In the entire doping range the in-plane correlation length of the CDW order in b-axis direction depends only very weakly on the hole concentration, and appears independent of the type and correlation length of the oxygen-chain order. The onset temperature of the CDW order is remarkably close to a temperature T^\dagger that marks the maximum of 1/(T_1T) in planar 63^Cu NQR/NMR experiments, potentially indicating a response of the spin dynamics to the formation of the CDW. Our discussion of these findings includes a detailed comparison to the charge stripe order in La2-xBaxCuO4.

An inelastic x-ray study of phonon broadening and charge density wave formation in ortho-II ordered YBa2Cu3O6.54

Inelastic x-ray scattering is used to investigate charge density wave (CDW) formation and the low-energy lattice dynamics of the underdoped high temperature superconductor ortho-II YBa2Cu3O6.54. We find that, for a temperature ~1/3 of the CDW onset temperature (~155 K), the CDW order is static within the resolution of the experiment, that is the inverse lifetime is less than 0.3 meV. In the same temperature region, low-energy phonons near the ordering wavevector of the CDW show large increases in their linewidths. This contrasts with the usual behavior in CDW systems where the phonon anomalies are strongest near the CDW onset temperature

X-ray diffraction observation of charge density wave order at zero magnetic field in ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.54}$

X-ray diffraction measurements show that the high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.54}$, with ortho-II oxygen order, has charge density wave order (CDW) in the absence of an applied magnetic field. The dominant wavevector of the CDW is $\mathbf{q}_{\mathrm{CDW}} = (0, 0.328(2), 0.5)$, with the in-plane component parallel to the $\mathbf{b}$-axis (chain direction). It has a similar incommensurability to that observed in ortho-VIII and ortho-III samples, which have different dopings and oxygen orderings. Our results for ortho-II contrast with recent high-field NMR measurements, which suggest a commensurate wavevector along the $\mathbf{a}$-axis. We discuss the relationship between spin and charge correlations in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{y}$, and recent high-field quantum oscillation, NMR and ultrasound experiments.

Unexpected phase locking of magnetic fluctuations in the multi-k magnet USb

The spin waves in the multi-k antiferromagnet, USb, soften and become quasielastic well below the AFM ordering temperature, T_N. This occurs without a magnetic or structural transition. It has been suggested that this change is in fact due to de-phasing of the different multi-k components: a switch from 3-k to 1-k behaviour. In this work, we use inelastic neutron scattering with tri-directional polarisation analysis to probe the quasielastic magnetic excitations and reveal that the 3-k structure does not de-phase. More surprisingly, the paramagnetic correlations also maintain the same clear phase correlations well above T_N (up to at least 1.4T_N). This precursor regime has not been observed before in a multi-k system.

Direct observation of competition between superconductivity and charge density wave order in YBa2Cu3Oy

Superconductivity often emerges in the proximity of, or in competition with, symmetry breaking ground states such as antiferromagnetism or charge density waves (CDW)1-5. A number of materials in the cuprate family, which includes the high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductors, show spin and charge density wave order5-7. Thus a fundamental question is to what extent these ordered states exist for compositions close to optimal for superconductivity. Here we use high-energy x-ray diffraction to show that a CDW develops at zero field in the normal state of superconducting YBa2Cu3O6.67 (Tc = 67 K). Below Tc, the application of a magnetic field suppresses superconductivity and enhances the CDW. Hence, the CDW and superconductivity are competing orders in this typical high-Tc superconductor, and high-Tc superconductivity can form from a pre-existing CDW state. Our results explain observations of small Fermi surface pockets8, negative Hall and Seebeck effect9,10 and the "Tc plateau"11 in this material when underdoped.

Temperature dependence of in-plane correlation lengths in exchange biased Co/FeF2

We have measured resonant soft x-ray diffuse magnetic scattering as a function of temperature in a positively exchange biased Co/FeF2 bilayer and analyzed the data in the distorted wave Born approximation to obtain in-plane charge and magnetic correlation lengths associated with the Co and FeF2 layers and estimate interfacial roughness. Tuning to the Fe and Co L3 edges reveals significantly different temperature trends in these quantities in the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic layers, respectively. While the magnetic correlation length of the uncompensated interfacial spins in FeF2 layer increase as temperature decreases, these quantities remain unchanged in the Co layer. Our results indicate that uncompensated Fe spins order within a range of few hundred nanometers in otherwise randomly distributed uncompensated magnetic moments, giving rise to spin clusters in the antiferromagnet whose size increase as the temperature decrease.

Exploring the fragile antiferromagnetic superconducting phase in CeCoIn5

CeCoIn5 is a heavy fermion Type-II superconductor which exhibits clear indications of Pauli-limited superconductivity. A variety of measurements give evidence for a transition at high magnetic fields inside the superconducting state, when the field is applied either parallel to or perpendicular to the c axis. When the field is perpendicular to the c axis, antiferromagnetic order is observed on the high-field side of the transition, with a magnetic wavevector of (q q 0.5), where q = 0.44 reciprocal lattice units. We show that this order remains as the magnetic field is rotated out of the basal plane, but the associated moment eventually disappears above 17 degrees, indicating that the anomalies seen with the field parallel to the c axis are not related to this magnetic order. We discuss the implications of this finding.

Roton-like mode in solid He-4

Recent theoretical and experimental work on solid He-4 has focused on vacancies, or other lattice defects and whether these can form a Bose-Einstein condensate within the solid. The earliest suggestion that this could happen was based on the conjecture that the ground state of the solid at T = 0 K would include vacancies. Although no direct evidence for zero point vacancies has been presented, a variety of experimental observations have been interpreted as being due to thermally activated vacancies. Here we directly probe the excitation spectrum of hcp solid He-4 using inelastic neutron scattering. We identify a branch of delocalized excitations, with both longitudinal and transverse dispersion that coexist with acoustic phonons. While the energy gap is larger and the characteristic wavevector is shifted to coincide with the position of the (100) Bragg peak, the longitudinal effective mass of this mode is within 15% of that for rotons in superfluid He-4. The dispersion relation intersects the longitudinal acoustic phonon half way to the zone boundary, and this distinguishes the mode from a conventional optic phonon. Our results provide direct evidence for coherent delocalized non-phonon excitations in solid helium, which we identify as delocalized vacancy modes.

Absence of low temperature anomaly in the Debye-Waller factor of solid He-4

The mean square atomic displacement in hcp-phase solid He-4 has been measured in crystals with a molar volume of 21.3 cm^3. It is temperature independent from 1 K to 140 mK, with no evidence for an anomaly in the vicinity of the proposed supersolid transition. The mean square displacement is different for in-plane motions (0.122 +/- 0.001 A^(2)) and out-of-plane motions (0.150 +/- 0.001 A ^(2)).

Multi-k magnetic structures in USb_{0.9}Te_{0.1} and UAs_{0.8}Se_{0.2} observed via resonant x-ray scattering at the U M4 edge

Experiments with resonant photons at the U M4 edge have been performed on a sample of USb_{0.9}Te_{0.1}, which has an incommensurate magnetic structure with k = 0.596(2) reciprocal lattice units. The reflections of the form , as observed previously in a commensurate k = 1/2 system [N. Bernhoeft et al., Phys. Rev. B 69 174415 (2004)] are observed, removing any doubt that these occur because of multiple scattering or high-order contamination of the incident photon beam. They are clearly connected with the presence of a 3k configuration. Measurements of the reflections from the sample UAs_{0.8}Se_{0.2} in a magnetic field show that the transition at T* ~ 50 K is between a low-temperature 2k and high-temperature 3k state and that this transition is sensitive to an applied magnetic field. These experiments stress the need for quantitative theory to explain the intensities of these reflections.
