Power-law random banded matrices and ultrametric matrices: eigenvector distribution in the intermediate regime

The power-law random banded matrices and the ultrametric random matrices are investigated numerically in the regime where eigenstates are extended but all integer matrix moments remain finite in the limit of large matrix dimensions. Though in this case standard analytical tools are inapplicable, we found that in all considered cases eigenvector distributions are extremely well described by the generalised hyperbolic distribution which differs considerably from the usual Porter-Thomas distribution but shares with it certain universal properties.

Eigenfunction distribution for the Rosenzweig-Porter model

The statistical distribution of eigenfunctions for the Rosenzweig-Porter model is derived for the region where eigenfunctions have fractal behaviour. The result is based on simple physical ideas and leads to transparent explicit formulas which agree very well with numerical calculations. It constitutes a rare case where a non-trivial eigenfunction distribution is obtained in a closed form.

Modification of the Porter-Thomas distribution by rank-one interaction

The Porter-Thomas (PT) distribution of resonance widths is one of the oldest and simplest applications of statistical ideas in nuclear physics. Previous experimental data confirmed it quite well but recent and more careful investigations show clear deviations from this distribution. To explain these discrepancies the authors of [PRL \textbf{115}, 052501 (2015)] argued that to get a realistic model of nuclear resonances is not enough to consider one of the standard random matrix ensembles which leads immediately to the PT distribution but it is necessary to add a rank-one interaction which couples resonances to decay channels. The purpose of the paper is to solve this model analytically and to find explicitly the modifications of the PT distribution due to such interaction. Resulting formulae are simple, in a good agreement with numerics, and could explain experimental results.

Origin of emission from square-shaped organic microlasers

The emission from open cavities with non-integrable features remains a challenging problem of practical as well as fundamental relevance. Square-shaped dielectric microcavities provide a favorable case study with generic implications for other polygonal resonators. We report on a joint experimental and theoretical study of square-shaped organic microlasers exhibiting a far-field emission that is strongly concentrated in the directions parallel to the side walls of the cavity. A semiclassical model for the far-field distributions is developed that is in agreement with even fine features of the experimental findings. Comparison of the model calculations with the experimental data allows the precise identification of the lasing modes and their emission mechanisms, providing strong support for a physically intuitive ray-dynamical interpretation. Special attention is paid to the role of diffraction and the finite side length.

Quantum Ising model in transverse and longitudinal fields: chaotic wave functions

The construction of a statistical model for eigenfunctions of the Ising model in transverse and longitudinal fields is discussed in detail for the chaotic case. When the number of spins is large, each wave function coefficient has the Gaussian distribution with zero mean and the variance calculated from the first two moments of the Hamiltonian. The main part of the paper is devoted to the discussion of different corrections to the asymptotic result. One type of corrections is related with higher order moments of the Hamiltonian and can be taken into account by Gibbs-like formulae. Another corrections are due to symmetry contributions which manifest as different numbers of non-zero real and complex coefficients. Statistical model with these corrections included agrees well with numerical calculations of wave function moments.

Dielectric Square Resonator Investigated with Microwave Experiments

We present a detailed experimental study of the symmetry properties and the momentum space representation of the field distributions of a dielectric square resonator as well as the comparison with a semiclassical model. The experiments have been performed with a flat ceramic microwave resonator. Both the resonance spectra and the field distributions were measured. The momentum space representations of the latter evidenced that the resonant states are each related to a specific classical torus, leading to the regular structure of the spectrum. Furthermore, they allow for a precise determination of the refractive index. Measurements with different arrangements of the emitting and the receiving antennas were performed and their influence on the symmetry properties of the field distributions was investigated in detail, showing that resonances with specific symmetries can be selected purposefully. In addition, the length spectrum deduced from the measured resonance spectra and the trace formula for the dielectric square resonator are discussed in the framework of the semiclassical model.

Spectral density of the quantum Ising model in two fields: Gaussian and multi-Gaussian approximations

Spectral density of quantum Ising model in two fields for large but finite number of spins $N$, is discussed in detail. When all coupling constants are of the same order, spectral densities in the bulk are well approximated by a Gaussian function which is typical behaviour for many-body models with short-range interactions. The main part of the paper is devoted to the investigation of a different characteristic case when spectral densities have peaks related with strong degeneracies of unperturbed states in certain limits of coupling constants. In the strict limit $N\to\infty$, peaks overlap and disappear but for values of $N$ accessible in numerical calculations they often strongly influence spectral densities and other quantities as well. A simple method is developed which permits to find general approximation formulae for multi-peak structure of spectral density in good agreement with numerics.

Experimental Observation of Localized Modes in a Dielectric Square Resonator

We investigated the frequency spectra and field distributions of a dielectric square resonator in a microwave experiment. Since such systems cannot be treated analytically, the experimental studies of their properties are indispensable. The momentum representation of the measured field distributions shows that all resonant modes are localized on specific classical tori of the square billiard. Based on these observations a semiclassical model was developed. It shows excellent agreement with all but a single class of measured field distributions that will be treated separately.

Calculation of mean spectral density for statistically uniform tree-like random models

For random matrices with tree-like structure there exists a recursive relation for the local Green functions whose solution permits to find directly many important quantities in the limit of infinite matrix dimensions. The purpose of this note is to investigate and compare expressions for the spectral density of random regular graphs, based on easy approximations for real solutions of the recursive relation valid for trees with large coordination number. The obtained formulas are in a good agreement with the results of numerical calculations even for small coordination number.

A method for calculating spectral statistics based on random-matrix universality with an application to the three-point correlations of the Riemann zeros

We illustrate a general method for calculating spectral statistics that combines the universal (Random Matrix Theory limit) and the non-universal (trace-formula-related) contributions by giving a heuristic derivation of the three-point correlation function for the zeros of the Riemann zeta function. The main idea is to construct a generalized Hermitian random matrix ensemble whose mean eigenvalue density coincides with a large but finite portion of the actual density of the spectrum or the Riemann zeros. Averaging the random matrix result over remaining oscillatory terms related, in the case of the zeta function, to small primes leads to a formula for the three-point correlation function that is in agreement with results from other heuristic methods. This provides support for these different methods. The advantage of the approach we set out here is that it incorporates the determinental structure of the Random Matrix limit.

Two-point correlation function for Dirichlet L-functions

The two-point correlation function for the zeros of Dirichlet L-functions at a height E on the critical line is calculated heuristically using a generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture for pairs of primes in arithmetic progression. The result matches the conjectured Random-Matrix form in the limit as $E\rightarrow\infty$ and, importantly, includes finite-E corrections. These finite-E corrections differ from those in the case of the Riemann zeta-function, obtained in (1996 Phys. Rev. Lett. 77 1472), by certain finite products of primes which divide the modulus of the primitive character used to construct the L-function in question.

Calculation of multifractal dimensions in spin chains

It was demonstrated in [Phys. Rev. E 86, 021104, (2012)], that the ground-state wave functions for a large variety of one-dimensional spin-1/2 models are multifractals in the natural spin-z basis. We present here the details of analytical derivations and numerical confirmations of these results.

Joint probability densities of level spacing ratios in random matrices

We calculate analytically, for finite-size matrices, joint probability densities of ratios of level spacings in ensembles of random matrices characterized by their associated confining potential. We focus on the ratios of two spacings between three consecutive real eigenvalues, as well as certain generalizations such as the overlapping ratios. The resulting formulas are further analyzed in detail in two specific cases: the beta-Hermite and the beta-Laguerre cases, for which we offer explicit calculations for small N. The analytical results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations of usual random matrix ensembles, and with the level statistics of a quantum many-body lattice model and zeros of the Riemann zeta function.

The distribution of the ratio of consecutive level spacings in random matrix ensembles

We derive expressions for the probability distribution of the ratio of two consecutive level spacings for the classical ensembles of random matrices. This ratio distribution was recently introduced to study spectral properties of many-body problems, as, contrary to the standard level spacing distributions, it does not depend on the local density of states. Our Wigner-like surmises are shown to be very accurate when compared to numerics and exact calculations in the large matrix size limit. Quantitative improvements are found through a polynomial expansion. Examples from a quantum many-body lattice model and from zeros of the Riemann zeta function are presented.

Trace formula for dielectric cavities III: TE modes

The construction of the semiclassical trace formula for the resonances with the transverse electric (TE) polarization for two-dimensional dielectric cavities is discussed. Special attention is given to the derivation of the two first terms of Weyl's series for the average number of such resonances. The obtained formulas agree well with numerical calculations for dielectric cavities of different shapes.

Application of a trace formula to the spectra of flat three-dimensional dielectric resonators

The length spectra of flat three-dimensional dielectric resonators of circular shape were determined from a microwave experiment. They were compared to a semiclassical trace formula obtained within a two-dimensional model based on the effective index of refraction approximation and a good agreement was found. It was necessary to take into account the dispersion of the effective index of refraction for the two-dimensional approximation. Furthermore, small deviations between the experimental length spectrum and the trace formula prediction were attributed to the systematic error of the effective index of refraction approximation. In summary, the methods developed in this article enable the application of the trace formula for two-dimensional dielectric resonators also to realistic, flat three-dimensional dielectric microcavities and -lasers, allowing for the interpretation of their spectra in terms of classical periodic orbits.

Multifractal dimensions for all moments for certain critical random matrix ensembles in the strong multifractality regime

We construct perturbation series for the q-th moment of eigenfunctions of various critical random matrix ensembles in the strong multifractality regime close to localization. Contrary to previous investigations, our results are valid in the region q<1/2. Our findings allow to verify, at first leading orders in the strong multifractality limit, the symmetry relation for anomalous fractal dimensions Delta(q)=Delta(1-q), recently conjectured for critical models where an analogue of the metal-insulator transition takes place. It is known that this relation is verified at leading order in the weak multifractality regime. Our results thus indicate that this symmetry holds in both limits of small and large coupling constant. For general values of the coupling constant we present careful numerical verifications of this symmetry relation for different critical random matrix ensembles. We also present an example of a system closely related to one of these critical ensembles, but where the symmetry relation, at least numerically, is not fulfilled.

Painleve solution of an integral equation

It is demonstrated that a certain integral equation can be solved using the Painleve equation of third kind. Inversely, a special solution of this Painleve equation can be expressed as the ratio of two infinite series of spheroidal functions with known coefficients.
