A material-agnostic platform to probe spin-phonon interactions using high-overtone bulk acoustic wave resonators

Spin-phonon interactions have a dual role in emerging spin-based quantum technologies. While they can be a limitation to device performance through decoherence, they also serve as a critical resource for coherent spin control, detection, and the realization of spin-based quantum networks. However, their direct characterization remains a challenge and is usually material-dependent. Here, we introduce a technique to probe spin-phonon coupling at millikelvin temperatures and gigahertz frequencies, using high-overtone bulk acoustic wave resonators (HBARs) integrated with arbitrary crystals via visco-elastic transfer of thin-film lithium niobate transducers. By tuning the Larmor frequency of dilute spin ensembles into resonance with HBAR modes, we extract the anisotropy and strength of spin-phonon interactions from acoustic dispersion and dissipation measurements. We demonstrate this approach in calcium tungstate (CaWO4) and yttrium orthosilicate (Y2SiO5), achieving cooperativities up to 0.5 for erbium dopant ensembles. Our method enables the study of spin-phonon interactions in complex crystalline materials, with minimal fabrication constraints. These results will facilitate the design of hybrid quantum systems and the quest for ion-matrix combination with enhanced spin-phonon coupling.

Surface-induced cubic anisotropy in nanomagnets

We investigate the effect of surface anisotropy in a spherical many-spin magnetic nanoparticle. By computing minor loops, two-dimensional (2D) and 3D energyscape, and by investigating the behavior of the net magnetization, we show that in the case of not too strong surface anisotropy the behavior of the many-spin particle may be modeled by that of a macrospin with an effective energy containing uniaxial and cubic anisotropy terms. This holds for both the transverse and Néel's surface anisotropy models.

Thermally-Activated Magnetic Reversal Induced by a Spin-Polarized Current

We have measured the statistical properties of magnetic reversal in nanomagnets driven by a spin-polarized current. Like reversal induced by a magnetic field, spin-transfer-driven reversal near room temperature exhibits the properties of thermally-activated escape over an effective barrier. However, the spin-transfer effect produces qualitatively different behaviors than an applied magnetic field. We discuss an effective current vs. field phase diagram. If the current and field are tuned so that their effects oppose one another, the magnet can be driven superparamagnetic.

Magnetic Anisotropy Variations and Non-Equilibrium Tunneling in a Cobalt Nanoparticle

We present detailed measurements of the discrete electron-tunneling level spectrum within nanometer-scale cobalt particles as a function of magnetic field and gate voltage, in this way probing individual quantum many-body eigenstates inside ferromagnetic samples. Variations among the observed levels indicate that different quantum states within one particle are subject to different magnetic anisotropy energies. Gate-voltage studies demonstrate that the low-energy tunneling spectrum is affected dramatically by the presence of non-equilibrium spin excitations.
