Decay of excited nuclei produced in $^{78,82}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reactions at 5.5 MeV/nucleon

Decay modes of excited nuclei are investigated in $^{78,82}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reactions at 5.5 MeV/nucleon. Charged products were measured by means of the $4π$ INDRA array. Kinetic-energy spectra and angular distributions of fragments with atomic number 3 $\le Z \le$ 28 indicate a high degree of relaxation and are compatible with a fission-like phenomenon. Persistence of structure effects is evidenced from elemental cross-sections ($σ_{Z}$) as well as a strong odd-even-staggering (o-e-s) of the light-fragment yields. The magnitude of the staggering does not significantly depend on the neutron content of the emitting system. Fragment-particle coincidences suggest that the light partners in very asymmetric fission are emitted either cold or at excitation energies below the particle emission thresholds. The evaporation residue cross-section of the $^{78}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reaction is slightly higher than the one measured in $^{82}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reaction. The fission-like component is larger by $\sim$ 25% for the reaction having the lowest neutron-to-proton ratio. These experimental features are confronted to the predictions of theoretical models. The Hauser-Feshbach approach including the emission of fragments up to $Z$ = 14 in their ground states as well as excited states does not account for the main features of $σ_{Z}$. For both reactions, the transition-state formalism reasonably reproduces the $Z$-distribution of the fragments with charge 12 $\le Z \le$ 28. However, this model strongly overestimates the light-fragment cross-sections and does not explain the o-e-s of the yields for 6 $\le Z \le$ 10. The shape of the whole $Z$-distribution and the o-e-s of the light-fragment yields are satisfactorily reproduced within the dinuclear system framework which treats the competition between evaporation, fusion-fission and quasifission processes. The model suggests that heavy fragments come mainly from quasifission while light fragments are predominantly populated by fusion. An underestimation of the cross sections for 16 $\le Z \le$ 22 could signal a mechanism in addition to the capture process.

New scalings in nuclear fragmentation

Fragment partitions of fragmenting hot nuclei produced in central and semiperipheral collisions have been compared in the excitation energy region 4-10 MeV per nucleon where radial collective expansion takes place. It is shown that, for a given total excitation energy per nucleon, the amount of radial collective energy fixes the mean fragment multiplicity. It is also shown that, at a given total excitation energy per nucleon, the different properties of fragment partitions are completely determined by the reduced fragment multiplicity (fragment multiplicity normalized to the source size). Freeze-out volumes seem to play a role in the scalings observed.

Multifragmentation and phase transition for hot nuclei

Recent important progress on the knowledge of multifragmentation and phase transition for hot nuclei, thanks to the high detection quality of the INDRA array, is reported. It concerns i) the radial collective energies involved in hot fragmenting nuclei/sources produced in central and semi- peripheral collisions and their influence on the observed fragment partitions, ii) a better knowledge of freeze-out properties obtained by means of a simulation based on all the available experimental information and iii) the quantitative study of the bimodal behaviour of the heaviest fragment distribution for fragmenting hot heavy quasi-projectiles which allows the extraction, for the first time, of an estimate of the latent heat of the phase transition.

Advancement in the understanding of multifragmentation and phase transition for hot nuclei

Recent advancement on the knowledge of multifragmentation and phase transition for hot nuclei is reported. It concerns i) the influence of radial collective energy on fragment partitions and the derivation of general properties of partitions in presence of such a collective energy, ii) a better knowledge of freeze-out properties obtained by means of a simulation based on all the available experimental information and iii) the quantitative study of the bimodal behaviour of the heaviest fragment charge distribution for fragmenting hot heavy quasi-projectiles which allows, for the first time, to estimate the latent heat of the phase transition.

Influence of Neutron Enrichment on Disintegration Modes of Compound Nuclei

Cross sections, kinetic energy and angular distributions of fragments with charge 6$\le$Z$\le$28 emitted in 78,82Kr+40C at 5.5 MeV/A reactions were measured at the GANIL facility using the INDRA apparatus. This experiment aims to investigate the influence of the neutron enrichment on the decay mechanism of excited nuclei. Data are discussed in comparison with predictions of transition state and Hauser-Feshbach models.

Comparison of fragment partitions production in peripheral and central collisions

Ensembles of single-source events, produced in peripheral and central collisions and correponding respectively to quasi-projectile and quasi-fusion sources, are analyzed. After selections on fragment kinematic properties, excitation energies of the sources are derived using the calorimetric method and the mean behaviour of fragments of the two ensembles are compared. Differences observed in their partitions, especially the charge asymmetry, can be related to collective energy deposited in the systems during the collisions.

Yield scaling, size hierarchy and fluctuations of observables in fragmentation of excited heavy nuclei

Multifragmentation properties measured with INDRA are studied for single sources produced in Xe+Sn reactions in the incident energy range 32-50 A MeV and quasiprojectiles from Au+Au collisions at 80 A MeV. A comparison for both types of sources is presented concerning Fisher scaling, Zipf law, fragment size and fluctuation observables. A Fisher scaling is observed for all the data. The pseudo-critical energies extracted from the Fisher scaling are consistent between Xe+Sn central collisions and Au quasi-projectiles. In the latter case it also corresponds to the energy region at which fluctuations are maximal. The critical energies deduced from the Zipf analysis are higher than those from the Fisher analysis.

Break-up stage restoration in multifragmentation reactions

In the case of Xe+Sn at 32 MeV/nucleon multifragmentation reaction break-up fragments are built-up from the experimentally detected ones using evaluations of light particle evaporation multiplicities which thus settle fragment internal excitation. Freeze-out characteristics are extracted from experimental kinetic energy spectra under the assumption of full decoupling between fragment formation and energy dissipated in different degrees of freedom. Thermal kinetic energy is determined uniquely while for freeze-out volume - collective energy a multiple solution is obtained. Coherence between the solutions of the break-up restoration algorithm and the predictions of a multifragmentation model with identical definition of primary fragments is regarded as a way to select the true value. The broad kinetic energy spectrum of $^3$He is consistent with break-up genesis of this isotope.

Break-up fragments excitation and the freeze-out volume

We investigate, in microcanonical multifragmentation models, the influence of the amount of energy dissipated in break-up fragments excitation on freeze-out volume determination. Assuming a limiting temperature decreasing with nuclear mass, we obtain for the Xe+Sn at 32 MeV/nucleon reaction [J. D. Frankland et al., Nucl. Phys. A689, 905 (2001); A689, 940 (2001)] a freeze-out volume almost half the one deduced using a constant limiting temperature.

Estimate of average freeze-out volume in multifragmentation events

An estimate of the average freeze-out volume for multifragmentation events is presented. Values of volumes are obtained by means of a simulation using the experimental charged product partitions measured by the 4pi multidetector INDRA for 129Xe central collisions on Sn at 32 AMeV incident energy. The input parameters of the simulation are tuned by means of the comparison between the experimental and simulated velocity (or energy) spectra of particles and fragments.

Kinetic energy spectra for fragments and break-up density in multifragmentation

We investigate the possibility, in nuclear fragmentation, to extract information on nuclear density at break-up from fragment kinetic energy spectra using a simultaneous scenario for fragment emission. The conclusions we derive are different from the recently published results of Viola et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, (2004), 132701] assuming a sequential fragment emission and claiming that the experimentally observed decrease of peak centroids for kinetic energy spectra of fragments with increasing bombarding energy is due to a monotonic decrease of the break-up density.
