Conditional dynamics induced by new configurations for Rydberg dipole-dipole interactions

We suggest a novel way to use strong Rydberg dipole-dipole interactions in order to induce non-trivial conditional dynamics in individual-atom systems and mesoscopic ensembles. Contrary to previous works, we suggest to excite atoms into different Rydberg states, which results in a potentially richer dynamical behaviour. Specifically, we investigate systems of individual hydrogen-like atoms or mesoscopic ensembles excited into high-lying hydrogen-like s, p or d states and show how to perform three-qubit conditional dynamics on the information they contain through a proper use of dipole-dipole interaction induced energy shifts.

Universal Quantum Computation in a Neutral Atom Decoherence Free Subspace

In this paper, we propose a way to achieve protected universal computation in a neutral atom quantum computer subject to collective dephasing. Our proposal relies on the existence of a Decoherence Free Subspace (DFS), resulting from symmetry properties of the errors. After briefly describing the physical system and the error model considered, we show how to encode information into the DFS and build a complete set of safe universal gates. Finally, we provide numerical simulations for the fidelity of the different gates in the presence of time-dependent phase errors and discuss their performance and practical feasibility.

Adiabatic Elimination in a Lambda System

This paper deals with different ways to extract the effective two-dimensional lower level dynamics of a lambda system excited by off-resonant laser beams. We present a commonly used procedure for elimination of the upper level, and we show that it may lead to ambiguous results. To overcome this problem and better understand the applicability conditions of this scheme, we review two rigorous methods which allow us both to derive an unambiguous effective two-level Hamiltonian of the system and to quantify the accuracy of the approximation achieved: the first one relies on the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation, while the second one resorts to the Green's function formalism and the Feshbach projection operator technique.

Mrk 421, Mrk 501, and 1ES 1426+428 at 100 GeV with the CELESTE Cherenkov Telescope

We have measured the gamma-ray fluxes of the blazars Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 in the energy range between 50 and 350 GeV (1.2 to 8.3 x 10^25 Hz). The detector, called CELESTE, used first 40, then 53 heliostats of the former solar facility "Themis" in the French Pyrenees to collect Cherenkov light generated in atmospheric particle cascades. The signal from Mrk 421 is often strong. We compare its flux with previously published multi-wavelength studies and infer that we are straddling the high energy peak of the spectral energy distribution. The signal from Mrk 501 in 2000 was weak (3.4 sigma). We obtain an upper limit on the flux from 1ES 1426+428 of less than half that of the Crab flux near 100 GeV. The data analysis and understanding of systematic biases have improved compared to previous work, increasing the detector's sensitivity.

Indirect Search for Dark Matter in M31 with the CELESTE Experiment

If dark matter is made of neutralinos, annihilation of such Majorana particles should produce high energy cosmic rays, especially in galaxy halo high density regions like galaxy centres. M31 (Andromeda) is our nearest neighbour spiral galaxy, and both its high mass and its low distance make it a source of interest for the indirect search for dark matter through gamma-ray detection. The ground based atmospheric Cherenkov telescope CELESTE observed M31 from 2001 to 2003, in the mostly unexplored energy range 50-500 GeV. These observations provide an upper limit on the flux above 50 GeV around $10^{-10}\rm{cm}^{-2}\rm{s}^{-1}$ in the frame of supersymmetric dark matter, and more generally on any gamma emission from M31.

Flux Measurement at 110 GeV of the Blazar Mrk 501 with CELESTE

The new analysis variable xi, shown to be powerful on the data taken with the final configuration of CELESTE, has been applied to data taken with previous detector configurations. First, the analysis is validated on Crab observations, and then the cuts for the blazar Mrk 501 are optimized using Mrk 421 data since the sources have similar declinations. Data from Mrk 501 was recorded in 2000 and 2001. The old analysis gave a 2.5 sigma excess. We obtain an excess of 2.9 sigma during this time and of 4.9 sigma during May and June 2000 that we interpret as a gamma-ray signal from Mrk 501, for which we calculate a flux of (6.9 +/- 2.2) * 10^{-7} photons m^{-2} s^{-1}. An upper limit from the other data with no signal is determined.

Coherence protection by the quantum Zeno effect and non-holonomic control in a Rydberg Rubidium isotope

The protection of the coherence of open quantum systems against the influence of their environment is a very topical issue. A scheme is proposed here which protects a general quantum system from the action of a set of arbitrary uncontrolled unitary evolutions. This method draws its inspiration from ideas of standard error-correction (ancilla adding, coding and decoding) and the Quantum Zeno Effect. A pedagogical demonstration of our method on a simple atomic system, namely a Rubidium isotope, is proposed.

Study of Mrk 501 above 60 GeV with CELESTE

The CELESTE atmospheric Cherenkov detector, running until June 2004 at the Themis solar facility, has taken data on compact sources such as pulsars and blazars. We will take stock of the experiment, in particular regarding the latest improvements of the detector simulation and data analysis. These changes provide us with a new analysis of old data with smaller uncertainties. We present here the evidence for a weak signal from Mrk 501 in 2000-2001.

Non-Holonomic Control I

In this paper, we present a universal control technique, the non-holonomic control, which allows us to impose any arbitrarily prescribed unitary evolution to any quantum system through the alternate application of two well-chosen perturbations.

Blazar observations above 60 GeV: the Influence of CELESTE's Energy Scale on the Study of Flares and Spectra

The CELESTE atmospheric Cherenkov detector ran until June 2004. It has observed the blazars Mrk 421, 1ES 1426+428 and Mrk 501. We significantly improved our understanding of the atmosphere using a LIDAR, and of the optical throughput of the detector using stellar photometry. The new data analysis provides better background rejection. We present our light curve for Mrk 421 for the 2002-2004 season and a comparison with X-ray data and the 2004 observation of 1ES 1426+428. The new analysis will allow a more sensitive search for a signal from Mrk 501.

Mrk 421 and 501 above 60 GeV: the Influence of CELESTE's Energy Scale on the Study of Flares and Spectra

The CELESTE atmospheric Cherenkov detector ran until June 2004. It has detected several gamma-ray flares of Mrk 421 since 1999. The new data analysis provides better background rejection. We compare our light curves with X-ray data. We significantly improved our understanding of the atmosphere, and of the optical throughput of the detector. This will allow a spectral measurement for Mrk 421 with smaller uncertainties and a more sensitive search for a signal from Mrk 501.

Testing the energy scale of the CELESTE experiment

The uncertainties on the absolute energy scale of the CELESTE experiment affect the constraints CELESTE can impose on > 30 GeV gamma-ray emission models. To date, these uncertainties have been of order 30 %. The optical throughputs of the atmosphere and the detector are key to understanding the energy scale. We are comparing CELESTE photomultiplier anode currents measured for bright stars with predictions from the detector simulation. In these studies we include data from recently installed radiometers, and from the LIDAR operating on the site.

The X-ray flaring activity of the galactic nucleus observed with XMM-Newton

We report the results of XMM-Newton observations of Sgr A*, the radiative counterpart of the massive black hole at the nucleus of our Galaxy, performed in the frame of the guaranteed time survey program of the Galactic Center region. The discovery of bright X-ray flares from Sgr A* with Chandra in October 2000 have opened new perspectives to understand the processes at work in this object and in general in black holes accreting at low accretion rates. We report here the important results obtained with XMM-Newton on the Sgr A* high-energy flaring activity and we discuss the implications on the models and the future observational perspectives.

A New X-Ray Flare from the Galactic Nucleus Detected with the XMM-Newton

The compact radio source Sgr A*, believed to be the counterpart of the massive black hole at the Galactic nucleus, was observed to undergo rapid and intense flaring activity in X-rays with Chandra in October 2000. We report here the detection with XMM-Newton EPIC cameras of the early phase of a similar X-ray flare from this source, which occurred on 2001 September 4. The source 2-10 keV luminosity increased by a factor ~ 20 to reach a level of 4 10$^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in a time interval of about 900 s, just before the end of the observation. The data indicate that the source spectrum was hard during the flare and can be described by simple power law of slope ~ 0.7. This XMM-Newton observation confirms the results obtained by Chandra, suggests that, in Sgr A*, rapid and intense X-ray flaring is not a rare event and therefore sets some constraints on the emission mechanism models proposed for this source.
